P48 – Welcome to all newcomers and returners to the OBU Forum

Ttrephena7y ago
As a moderator of the OBU Forum let me assure anyone who has found us for the first time that you are now within easy access of lots of great, reliable and sound advice about the OBU BSc Degree in Applied Accounting. Spend a bit of time browsing our home page and see for yourself the FREE advice and service we offer and don't forget to read our FAQs which I compiled with help from an actual experienced OBU marker : www.opentuition.com/obu And the news gets even better - our poll of Open Tuition students' results for submissions regularly shows that our students achieved a pass rate of at least 79% compared with the average OBU pass rate of 57% (we say at least because it is highly likely that many more who had passed did not bother to come back to vote so it was probably over 80%). In addition students who have submitted Topic 17 (Corporate governance) and used our advice on our T17 forum have reported some great results in spite of having little real mentoring guidance (both alfred [P29] and eminathsana [P30] passed at the first attempt and achieved B grades) and confirmed our help was invaluable in their success. We also provide a specific forum thread with helpful suggestions for tackling the Airline sector for Topic 8 so could be useful if you find yourself having to resubmit a previously failed RAP on this topic. NOTE prescribed industry sectors are changing and airlines will not be allowed from P35 onwards so no one submitting their first attempt or changing topic or company for P35 may choose an airline - and only previously failed students who submitted between P32 and P34 can use an airline based on their previous work. To solve problems first look using our search facility -just a few keywords will bring up relevant posts (remember a degree is about finding and researching for yourself!). Please try to select the most appropriate forum topic if you need to ask a question as it helps everyone to find it should they subsequently have a similar query. When you post a query it automatically will bring it to the top of the 'white' forum list so it can easily be found by everyone. However if you really can't find anything about your particular query then please post it on 'PLEASE HELP KEEP OUR FORUMS TIDY!!!!' where I will answer it and then post it to the appropriate topic. Many of our contributors including our Moderator, Ehsan, have done the RAP for themselves so can offer help from their own experience and I have more than 13 years experience of reviewing RAPS and advising students so what we DON'T know about the OBU RAP on this Forum could be written on the back of a postage stamp!!! Tired of being pushed to do Topic 8 by your mentor? Take a look at the Topic 17 Corporate Governance Forum - you may be surprised at how dynamic and interesting T17 can be! Our students achieved great success with this topic pre P35 often getting at least B grades. (The topic title changed then so it is still early days to judge the current position) but we still offer lots of good advice if you choose this topic (personal favourite of mine) One word of warning on the subject of mentors: we advise that you do not respond to any posts from individuals plugging their 'mentoring' services as from P31 all mentors must be OBU registered mentors so you must select one from the OBU list. (There is provision for any ACCA members to do the online mentoring course and become registered and this also counts towards CPD so you may be able to persuade a potential mentor such as a supervisor to become a listed mentor). We also advise all students to register on the OBU Mentoring website EVEN if you already have a mentor as OBU is putting a lot of useful resources on this site to help students like you! It is vital you do your work yourself and resist any mentor who offers you samples. OBU is actively targeting both mentors and students engaged in this practice. Several students have been stripped of the degree for this, mentors banned and at best you can be given at least GBP 600 penalty resubmission fee (it is set at double the normal fee) and at worst excluded completely from getting the degree and your case referred to ACCA for potential disciplinary proceedings. And do your spreadsheet yourself - again using one given out by the mentor can lead to misconduct issues if a marker detects you have based your work on a common spreadsheet. .. and on this subject please do not solicit actual work from another student -this is not just against OBU rules but could end up in ACCA disciplinary proceedings being brought against you too - besides there us no need to as the OBU Information Pack and Mentoring website and this Forum can provide you with much better advice. If you can't decide on a mentor (the OBU site merely lists mentors but does NOT recommend anyone in particular), then take a look at 'Advancing the Quality of the OpenTuition-OBU Experience' as we are able to approve one organisation that offers mentoring services based on their track record (details of them and comments made by their students can be found on that Forum). So if you are struggling to find a reputable mentor take a look- but you are under no obligation to use their services -we just offer it as an endorsement of assured quality. One final piece of advice - as well as many students choosng Topic 8 because they mistakenly believe they do not have many options, many more who don't have a local suitable company often go for Topic 6 on Motivation. The problem with this choice is it depends on a survey and the surveys are often very badly done (T6 consequently has a very low pass rate and very few students actually pass at the first attempt). If you have internet access then you may choose ANY company wherever they are in the world subject to the current RAP rules so T8 may be viable (as well as T17 of course) provided you select a company from the prescribed industry sector. My advice is: don't rush into doing any topic think carefully about it and other topics and the various requirements needed to pass. Also remember if you really want to do T6 you MUST spend a lot of time in preparing your questionnaire and planning your work otherwise your efforts will be misdirected and time wasted. However on the plus side we do have at least one contributor, Batala, who himself did Topic 6 successfully so between us he and I will try to help where we can if you do want to choose this topic. The OT team, our moderators and contributors welcome you to the OBU Forum and we wish you every success with your Research and Analysis Project Trephena - OT OBU Forum Moderator PS Although Open Tuition is completely free to use at point of use it does depend for survival on advertising revenue -we would therefore ask that you do NOT use an ad blocker. If you do but still want to benefit from our advice it would be good if instead you made a donation so that we can be around to continue helping future students just like we hope we have helped you! Thanks.

Thanks for providing this forum. Please where can I get the structure (E.g. Introduction, body, conclusion) for my rap. I am doing topic 8. Where do I bring in the pestle and swot analysis ?
GMGillian M3y ago#153
Sorry for the delay in answering. The University no longer issues exemplars for these so the short answer is there is no place you can get them but your mentor may be able to advise you what to put where. The point about the PESTLE, SWOT etc is that they are what influence the strategic decisions so you need to set these out before the ratios as it would be expected that the trends are related to the consequences and success [or otherwise] of these decisions, so they two sections are linked as such. Do not make the mistake as many students in the past have made and think the models are isolated components and put them after the ratio analysis - this is not their purpose - they are there to guide and strengthen your evaluation.

Thanks @GillianM

Hi hi Ms Gillian. Many students are confused as to what makes up the word count. Are the words on the graphs and charts in the financial analysis counted as part of th 7,500 words?
GMGillian M3y ago#156
Apologies for the delay in responding - I have been busy helping my own students complete their work The main issue with word count is when it is 'abused' - by this I mean students have pasted tables as images recognising that the word count system does not register words in these and think they will be ignored. The marker will then make a judgment call. The occasional use of such images will be ignored but if it is suspected that the student has deliberate tried to circumvent the rules then markers can come down hard. So words in graphs and original charts will normally be ok but use of tables and other objects that could have been pasted as Word inclusions will be reviewed. I once had a student who used copious images and diagrams and therefore I insisted that he bring his word count down to below 7,000 to allow for them. I never heard from him until about 10 weeks after the results came out when he finally sent me his results email. In June having only just received it himself. Fortunately he had passed but I suspect the long delay was because a marker had flagged up all the images. As they were relevant and referenced and he had reduced down the word count to allow for the words in them and done an excellent RAP he finally got a well deserved A but it is a cautionary tale! BTW there are some checks to do to save words - a dash like I have just used counts as a word and putting a gap between the p and the page number will record as 2 words whereas p.7 will be just one; also consider hyphens where appropriate up-to-date records as just one word as does short-term Good luck to your students!

Hi there, I failed my RR P45, topic 15c (marketing) under "understanding and application of accountancy and business models" and have passed the rest. Can someone advice me other than this part, which part else that I need to revise and resubmit? Do I need to resubmit Appendix Excel and Word, PPT, Reference list, SLS?
TTymoteusz3y ago#158
Hi all Did anyone get the Diploma yet or received any information about the package details? I am wondering if I will receive a tracking number or something or it will just come by mail one day? Thanks

Hi, Starting my RAP journey soon and haven't decided whether 3 months is enough for a Rap submission that I haven't begun AT ALL. Btw, Can someone change the name of this to P47?
GMGillian M3y ago#160
My advice - get started asap as most students underestimate the amount of time required and to do a decent report that stands a good chance of passing is a 3 month task minimum and realistically probably a bit longer....

Hi, I have just started on my rap journey and decided to work on topic 13. The company I have chosen have faced multiple scandals of different types and magnitude over the last 5 years and I am confused whether I have to establish a relation between all the events or analyse them as individual factors. Also I am not quite sure what is expected from this particular requirement 'analyse and evaluate the reasons for the poor ethical business practices' in the info pack for topic 13. Please do help me out.
GMGillian M2y ago#162
Well done on choosing Topic 13, which is a very interesting topic. There has to have been some ‘event’ in the last 3 years: this might in addition be as a result of fines, a court trial or an investigation that may be connected to something that happened prior to that. There may or may not be, a connection (but usually you can attribute multiple failures) to weak governance and poor ethical behaviour by the board. The important thing is to ‘evaluate’ when doing your analysis: this goes much further than just telling the reader what had happened - it is about considering the implications of what has happened and the broader consequences / significance of what has happened
GMGillian M2y ago#163
Nothing. It just means that you will not have benefitted from the University's policy of maintaining anonymity in marking

Hi, I'm planning to submit my RAP in P47 and i have a question. The company that I have chosen for topic 7, announced the merger in 2019. But the merger was officially closed in 2020 and the FS of the combined company are also available from 2020 onward. According to the RAP requirement - For November 2023 RAP submission, merger would have to take place after Jan 2020. My question is, if the merger was completed in April 2020, does this merger satisfy RAP requirement even though it was announced in mid 2019?
GMGillian M2y ago#165
Yes you could use this company

Hi, I'm a new comer and I'm really overwhelmed about where and how to begin with the OBU RAP? This is the very first time I'm undertaking anything like this. What would be a good place to begin?
Ttrephena2y ago#170
This is true for most students i.e. they have never done any academic work before and are overwhelmed. A good place to start is the OBU mentoring website as they have lots of resources there. You will need to find an appropriate mentor. Not all mentors are equal when it comes to expertise and experience - word of mouth is a good way of finding one and alternatively we have two recommended mentors. Although a good mentor is not cheap they may save you money overall as if you fail each submission costs GBP 495 currently (so using a less experienced mentor can be a false economy). Also beware of any ‘mention’ who offers to write the report for you and telling you this is standard practice. It most certainly isn’t - it is fraud (and therefore a criminal offence) under UK law as is using a writing service and can result in you being barred from submitting again.
MMona2y ago#171
@trephena @gillianM Hi, I'm planning to write on Topic 3 which is to "Analyse and evaluate the impact on the financial performance of an organisation of a recent change imposed by the regulatory environment." What would be the two best business models to use in the RAP in addition to the ratio analysis?
Ttrephena2y ago#172
This is an interesting topic and involves a combination of theory and practice and financial analysis. The actual models may depend upon how impactful the change will be on the organisation. The suggestions in the Information Pack propose conducting a pre-change SWOT analysis [so at the beginning of the analysis and evaluation] and a post-change SWOT - so probably the last section before your conclusions. Alongside this you would be using ratio analysis to illustrate some of the key changes in the financials as a consequence of the changes. You might also consider some aspects of change management theory
AAyesha2y ago#173
Hi everyone, I hope everyone is doing well. I am actually struggling a lot with the motivation to get the RAP done. Also it feels like a very lonely process. Any groups for P48? on whatsapp or telegram?
Ttrephena2y ago#174
Sorry to hear you are struggling with this. One of the issues with the RAP is that there are 15 topics and therefore unlike exams, the experience can vary between students and not all of the advice is applicable to all 15 topics. Perhaps we should try to ask more students to share their experiences on the different topic heads. Possibly one problem though is that once students pass, apart from posting their result or mentor feedback they tend not to return to the OBU thread.

Hi, my company is usa based company and has a year end of 31 December 2023 , can i use the 10 k report ? I want to submit in may , and the annual report is still not published on the website
AWAbdul Wasay2y ago#176
Hi, I have chosen the topic 5 for my obu submission, can you please help me select a good company for it?
RRidwan2y ago#177
Hi I have included the in-text citation but forgot to include the reference in my reference list. This occurred only once, all the remaining in-text citations have their corresponding reference in the reference list. This particular reference relates to the annual report of a company. I did include the reference for 2020 annual report but forgot the 2022 one. But the source link has been included in my excel. Please help, i am stressing out!! Thank you.
Ttrephena2y ago#178
One slight oversight like this should not be a major issue given your further clarifications above. Please do try to stop stressing!
TTalha1y ago#179
Hi i need a suggestion. Can we use annual report reference in our Ratio analysis for topic 8 like can we take facts from the annual reports and refer the annual report its self or we need to search in google for external reference which is more likely not available. Please guide me for P49 .
TTalha1y ago#180
Hi i am new here and working on my RAP P49 topic 8 . Can some mentor guide me whether i can use Annual reports in a reference in my Ratio analysis ? or every fact should be external which is too difficult for my target company to be available
