P48 – Welcome to all newcomers and returners to the OBU Forum

Ttrephena7y ago
As a moderator of the OBU Forum let me assure anyone who has found us for the first time that you are now within easy access of lots of great, reliable and sound advice about the OBU BSc Degree in Applied Accounting. Spend a bit of time browsing our home page and see for yourself the FREE advice and service we offer and don't forget to read our FAQs which I compiled with help from an actual experienced OBU marker : www.opentuition.com/obu And the news gets even better - our poll of Open Tuition students' results for submissions regularly shows that our students achieved a pass rate of at least 79% compared with the average OBU pass rate of 57% (we say at least because it is highly likely that many more who had passed did not bother to come back to vote so it was probably over 80%). In addition students who have submitted Topic 17 (Corporate governance) and used our advice on our T17 forum have reported some great results in spite of having little real mentoring guidance (both alfred [P29] and eminathsana [P30] passed at the first attempt and achieved B grades) and confirmed our help was invaluable in their success. We also provide a specific forum thread with helpful suggestions for tackling the Airline sector for Topic 8 so could be useful if you find yourself having to resubmit a previously failed RAP on this topic. NOTE prescribed industry sectors are changing and airlines will not be allowed from P35 onwards so no one submitting their first attempt or changing topic or company for P35 may choose an airline - and only previously failed students who submitted between P32 and P34 can use an airline based on their previous work. To solve problems first look using our search facility -just a few keywords will bring up relevant posts (remember a degree is about finding and researching for yourself!). Please try to select the most appropriate forum topic if you need to ask a question as it helps everyone to find it should they subsequently have a similar query. When you post a query it automatically will bring it to the top of the 'white' forum list so it can easily be found by everyone. However if you really can't find anything about your particular query then please post it on 'PLEASE HELP KEEP OUR FORUMS TIDY!!!!' where I will answer it and then post it to the appropriate topic. Many of our contributors including our Moderator, Ehsan, have done the RAP for themselves so can offer help from their own experience and I have more than 13 years experience of reviewing RAPS and advising students so what we DON'T know about the OBU RAP on this Forum could be written on the back of a postage stamp!!! Tired of being pushed to do Topic 8 by your mentor? Take a look at the Topic 17 Corporate Governance Forum - you may be surprised at how dynamic and interesting T17 can be! Our students achieved great success with this topic pre P35 often getting at least B grades. (The topic title changed then so it is still early days to judge the current position) but we still offer lots of good advice if you choose this topic (personal favourite of mine) One word of warning on the subject of mentors: we advise that you do not respond to any posts from individuals plugging their 'mentoring' services as from P31 all mentors must be OBU registered mentors so you must select one from the OBU list. (There is provision for any ACCA members to do the online mentoring course and become registered and this also counts towards CPD so you may be able to persuade a potential mentor such as a supervisor to become a listed mentor). We also advise all students to register on the OBU Mentoring website EVEN if you already have a mentor as OBU is putting a lot of useful resources on this site to help students like you! It is vital you do your work yourself and resist any mentor who offers you samples. OBU is actively targeting both mentors and students engaged in this practice. Several students have been stripped of the degree for this, mentors banned and at best you can be given at least GBP 600 penalty resubmission fee (it is set at double the normal fee) and at worst excluded completely from getting the degree and your case referred to ACCA for potential disciplinary proceedings. And do your spreadsheet yourself - again using one given out by the mentor can lead to misconduct issues if a marker detects you have based your work on a common spreadsheet. .. and on this subject please do not solicit actual work from another student -this is not just against OBU rules but could end up in ACCA disciplinary proceedings being brought against you too - besides there us no need to as the OBU Information Pack and Mentoring website and this Forum can provide you with much better advice. If you can't decide on a mentor (the OBU site merely lists mentors but does NOT recommend anyone in particular), then take a look at 'Advancing the Quality of the OpenTuition-OBU Experience' as we are able to approve one organisation that offers mentoring services based on their track record (details of them and comments made by their students can be found on that Forum). So if you are struggling to find a reputable mentor take a look- but you are under no obligation to use their services -we just offer it as an endorsement of assured quality. One final piece of advice - as well as many students choosng Topic 8 because they mistakenly believe they do not have many options, many more who don't have a local suitable company often go for Topic 6 on Motivation. The problem with this choice is it depends on a survey and the surveys are often very badly done (T6 consequently has a very low pass rate and very few students actually pass at the first attempt). If you have internet access then you may choose ANY company wherever they are in the world subject to the current RAP rules so T8 may be viable (as well as T17 of course) provided you select a company from the prescribed industry sector. My advice is: don't rush into doing any topic think carefully about it and other topics and the various requirements needed to pass. Also remember if you really want to do T6 you MUST spend a lot of time in preparing your questionnaire and planning your work otherwise your efforts will be misdirected and time wasted. However on the plus side we do have at least one contributor, Batala, who himself did Topic 6 successfully so between us he and I will try to help where we can if you do want to choose this topic. The OT team, our moderators and contributors welcome you to the OBU Forum and we wish you every success with your Research and Analysis Project Trephena - OT OBU Forum Moderator PS Although Open Tuition is completely free to use at point of use it does depend for survival on advertising revenue -we would therefore ask that you do NOT use an ad blocker. If you do but still want to benefit from our advice it would be good if instead you made a donation so that we can be around to continue helping future students just like we hope we have helped you! Thanks.

Presumably you are referring to Topic 8 here? No problem usually if the companies are both using the same set of standards (the issue is usually when they are not! You may mention as a Brownie point in Part 2 that you have ensured they both report under GAAP. (Do check their policies on things like depreciation are the same though - if you intend to were review asset turnover - and also those for inventory when looking at liquidity ratios and comment accordingly if the policies are different and significantly affect the ratios and comparisons

Hi, Bernadine here. I have gone through info pack of OBU and I have to take decision on which topic to choose. I have selected three topics (8,6 & 11). Can anyone here guide me which topic to take. Thank you. Your suggestions will help me to take decision.
Ttrephena6y ago#34
For Topic 11 you will need to have access to company information and be granted permission to interview staff in Internal audit to assess the effectiveness of the IA function. For Topic 6 you will need to design a questionnaire and survey employees in the organisation chosen. In order to collect the data (known as primary data) for both these topics you must get written permission from a senior manager in the organisation. You are advised to sort this out first as you must submit this signed letter with your work. See the information pack about the requirements for primary data. Topic 8 uses only secondary data and therefore you do not need permission. Topics requiring primary data are usually not done well because questionnaires and interviews are normally poorly administered and therefore results are not well evaluated. However if you are skilled in interviewing and questionnaire design then this won't present any problems.

Hi I am in distress , please help me I was planning to submit my OBU thesis in period 40 in May and did finish some of it. But I am really confused about the requirement and deadline for ethics module? There are two modules on my acca page:1 Ethics module (which I completed after completing my F9 back in 2016 and got my advance diploma) 2.Ethics in professional skills module which I completed yesterday on 27th March as I thought the deadline was 28th infact it is 25th March. Please tell me which module is necessary requirement for OBU? And if I did miss the deadline by two days I won't be able to submit in period 40? :( Please help me
Ttrephena6y ago#39
I believe it is the latter. However there is usually a little leeway and if you are lucky they will not impose the strict deadline of 25 March and allow you to have completed this 2 days late. The same leeway though does NOT apply to when submitting actual work in May. I think this time they may be using the automated submission process which is set to time out at 12.00 GMT 13 May. Also the system clogs up in the last few hours so make sure you submit by 12 May latest in order not to be frustrated and disappointed
DDennis6y ago#40
Hello everyone Can someone tell about the deadline for RAP submission, has OBU extended it due to COVID-19 outbreak ? Thank You
Ttrephena6y ago#41
Yes it is now 27 May. There is a possible extension to the 10 year registration limit if the virus prevented you from submitting in Period 40 and those students will be allowed to submit in P41. Pleas note though you may have to produce evidence of not being able to submit -you cannot assume that if the virus has not affected you or your country you procrastinate to P41 as most students will be expected to have been able to complete their work on time with the new extension to 27 May.

Hello everyone, I trust you are well, and keeping safe in this difficult time of Covid19. I am working on Topic 8 for my OBU May 2020 submission. I have selected auto-motors USA industry with main company being Ford Motors for the business and financial analysis. As Ford's competitor I have selected one company that is General Motors. I have following questions regarding my project. Q1 - In terms of ratio analysis, I would like to discuss all particular ratios under one heading. For instance, all ratios regarding profitability would be discussed under one heading "PROFITABILITY" rather that talking through individually under profit margin/gross margin/ROCE. Would this approach be appropriate according to RAP requirement? Q2 - In order to maintain word limit, I am trying to discuss the compound trends over three years period in ratios rather than discussing changes between each year on year. Is this approach reasonable to gain full available marks, or you must talk ratio trends year on year? Q3 - I am comparing my chosen company Ford with ONLY one competitor General Motor along with industry trends. Is one competitor SUFFICIENT for this analysis? Q4 - Ford is USA based firm having operational activities of manufacturing, distribution and selling around the globe. But my analysis is being more geared towards USA automotive industry, with little focus on international industry level. Do I need to discuss Ford's positions on international industry level more or focusing more on US industry is reasonable? I await for your reply. Your prompt reply will be highly appreciated. Warm Regards A Jain

Q1 this sounds fine Q2 show all of this information by graphs where possible -your words should be reserved for highlighting SIGNIFICANT facts and discussion of strategic management decisions relevant to what you have found. It is correct to take your approach as the latter do not start on the first day of each year and end on the last day of the financial year they span time periods. Q3 only one comparator company is needed Q4 it should be fine if you take the same approach with both companies however I suspect reported figures are global. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT I DO NOT MENTOR FOR TOPIC 8 and therefore can only give general advice on it. Your own mentor should be able to assist further perhaps?
AAj6y ago#45
Dear GillianM, Thank you for you reply. Your reply has cleared many of my doubts, giving me more clear picture. I APPRECIATE from heart for taking your time for this, especially as you are not even Topic 8 mentor. Please kindly, can you answer one more question if possible, I promise not to bother you after this. With regards to graphs. RAP guideline says that words containing in graphs will not be counted towards the word limit. So if the graphs are included into the main body of the report, the words will most likely exceeds its limit. Q - Will be ok to have graphs as part of the main body of the report alongside explanation, or should it be included into the appendix separately? Warm Regards A Jain

Hello, I have a question regarding re-submission as it is creating too much confusion for me. I have previously failed my OBU and was asked by ACO to change my topic and company. Now I have done it on a different topic, so do I still need to submit the re-submission statement and if yes, how can I manage to write a whole 500 words essay on it?
Aaatio6y ago#53
Hi Trephena, Is it possible to clarify me on the above query please. Thanks in advance!
Ttrephena6y ago#54
Sorry for the delay. A resubmission statement is only required if resubmitting on the same company and topic. This is because the idea is to make you think about the marker feedback and to focus on what was needed to improve and correct the report to hopefully bring it up to a pass. As you have had to changed topic this does not apply - consequently there is nothing for you to write.
Aaatio6y ago#55
Thank you for the reply. I was reading in one of the OBU pack that even if we change the topic, we still have to submit the resubmission statement by mentioning that I have changed the topic but it was in one of the previous OBU pack. Not sure about the new one.
Ttrephena6y ago#56
Well yes you may make a simple statement of fact to that effect - just one sentence would do. As set out above the full statement is to help you correct a previous submission and there is an article on this on our homepage to guide students in the use of this. However in your case this clearly does not apply and you will not be penalised if you do not write a statement -though possibly there is an IT system requirement where, as a resubmitting student the system demands one - in which case just type a sentence in a Word doc so that you can load that.
Ggnzombe6y ago#57
Good day, If I am resubmitting the submission slides do I also need to submit a resubmission statement since the only section I am resubmitting is the presentation Regards
TToni6y ago#58
Waited up to submit to get it out of the way and the portal gives me an error. Has anyone managed to submit?
GMGillian M6y ago#59
This is probably because the new submission portal is linked to Turnatin (The electronic checking program) which is undergoing maintenance this weekend. Mentors were sent an e-mail yesterday about this. Perhaps your mentor did not forward this to you? Such outages are planned months ahead and as Turnitin is used by the whole University and campus based students ( literally thousands and thousands) would normally be sitting exams right now -so not submitting coursework - someone probably thought it was an opportune time to take it down without realising it would impact on the RAP programme. (By comparison there are probably only about 2,000 -2,500 RAP students each Period) It is an inconvenience - especially if you sat up especially to submit -well done by the,way for trying to get in early rather than procrastinating! However from the email I understand the service is back-up and running on Monday 4 May so please try then

Unfortunately my mentor has had limited involvement with my project due to being cautious about assisting me and risking collusion. I’m ultra paranoid about anything I use or any assistance I source. I have 5 pages of references and bibliography... The public financial statements I used, I even reached out to the organisations for their consent (which they gave me). I have had my 3 meetings, discussed my plans (I originally had two topic ideas and put together project plans), but everything has been my idea and my mentor has just asked me questions to ensure I’ve met my objectives - I’ve not spoken to her since my presentation. I’m my SLS I discussed the impacts of COVID-19, and how this may have influenced our interaction, and how the need to be flexible and utilise technology has developed me as a person (I live on an island and there was only one mentor that I could find, and paid extra to be able to have her for face-to-face meetings, but obviously couldn’t). I am a little annoyed about my mentors caution, but I understand why she has been so prudent. I am a perfectionist, and wanted to submit last otherwise I’ll continue to keep re-reading it and changing everything. Just one question for you Gillian: I used my friends Grammarly account and several other softwares to ensure I had references sufficiently and not taken direct quotes subconsciously. Is there a chance that my work might match 100% to his Grammarly account? I assume I’ll just be able to explain what’s happened regardless. I hand wrote my report first, and then typed it up using my hand written notes as guidance. I find I write more fluently and carefully whilst hand writing, as when typing my brain is a sentence ahead and I go on a tangent! Hopefully I’ll be able to submit soon, good luck everyone!
