As a moderator of the OBU Forum let me assure anyone who has found us for the first time that you are now within easy access of lots of great, reliable and sound advice about the OBU BSc Degree in Applied Accounting.
Spend a bit of time browsing our home page and see for yourself the FREE advice and service we offer and don't forget to read our FAQs which I compiled with help from an actual experienced OBU marker :
www.opentuition.com/obu
And the news gets even better - our poll of Open Tuition students' results for submissions regularly shows that our students achieved a pass rate of at least 79% compared with the average OBU pass rate of 57% (we say at least because it is highly likely that many more who had passed did not bother to come back to vote so it was probably over 80%). In addition students who have submitted Topic 17 (Corporate governance) and used our advice on our T17 forum have reported some great results in spite of having little real mentoring guidance (both alfred [P29] and eminathsana [P30] passed at the first attempt and achieved B grades) and confirmed our help was invaluable in their success.
We also provide a specific forum thread with helpful suggestions for tackling the Airline sector for Topic 8 so could be useful if you find yourself having to resubmit a previously failed RAP on this topic.
NOTE prescribed industry sectors are changing and airlines will not be allowed from P35 onwards so no one submitting their first attempt or changing topic or company for P35 may choose an airline - and only previously failed students who submitted between P32 and P34 can use an airline based on their previous work.
To solve problems first look using our search facility -just a few keywords will bring up relevant posts (remember a degree is about finding and researching for yourself!). Please try to select the most appropriate forum topic if you need to ask a question as it helps everyone to find it should they subsequently have a similar query. When you post a query it automatically will bring it to the top of the 'white' forum list so it can easily be found by everyone. However if you really can't find anything about your particular query then please post it on 'PLEASE HELP KEEP OUR FORUMS TIDY!!!!' where I will answer it and then post it to the appropriate topic.
Many of our contributors including our Moderator, Ehsan, have done the RAP for themselves so can offer help from their own experience and I have more than 13 years experience of reviewing RAPS and advising students so what we DON'T know about the OBU RAP on this Forum could be written on the back of a postage stamp!!!
Tired of being pushed to do Topic 8 by your mentor? Take a look at the Topic 17 Corporate Governance Forum - you may be surprised at how dynamic and interesting T17 can be! Our students achieved great success with this topic pre P35 often getting at least B grades. (The topic title changed then so it is still early days to judge the current position) but we still offer lots of good advice if you choose this topic (personal favourite of mine)
One word of warning on the subject of mentors: we advise that you do not respond to any posts from individuals plugging their 'mentoring' services as from P31 all mentors must be OBU registered mentors so you must select one from the OBU list. (There is provision for any ACCA members to do the online mentoring course and become registered and this also counts towards CPD so you may be able to persuade a potential mentor such as a supervisor to become a listed mentor). We also advise all students to register on the OBU Mentoring website EVEN if you already have a mentor as OBU is putting a lot of useful resources on this site to help students like you!
It is vital you do your work yourself and resist any mentor who offers you samples. OBU is actively targeting both mentors and students engaged in this practice. Several students have been stripped of the degree for this, mentors banned and at best you can be given at least GBP 600 penalty resubmission fee (it is set at double the normal fee) and at worst excluded completely from getting the degree and your case referred to ACCA for potential disciplinary proceedings. And do your spreadsheet yourself - again using one given out by the mentor can lead to misconduct issues if a marker detects you have based your work on a common spreadsheet.
.. and on this subject please do not solicit actual work from another student -this is not just against OBU rules but could end up in ACCA disciplinary proceedings being brought against you too - besides there us no need to as the OBU Information Pack and Mentoring website and this Forum can provide you with much better advice.
If you can't decide on a mentor (the OBU site merely lists mentors but does NOT recommend anyone in particular), then take a look at 'Advancing the Quality of the OpenTuition-OBU Experience' as we are able to approve one organisation that offers mentoring services based on their track record (details of them and comments made by their students can be found on that Forum). So if you are struggling to find a reputable mentor take a look- but you are under no obligation to use their services -we just offer it as an endorsement of assured quality.
One final piece of advice - as well as many students choosng Topic 8 because they mistakenly believe they do not have many options, many more who don't have a local suitable company often go for Topic 6 on Motivation. The problem with this choice is it depends on a survey and the surveys are often very badly done (T6 consequently has a very low pass rate and very few students actually pass at the first attempt). If you have internet access then you may choose ANY company wherever they are in the world subject to the current RAP rules so T8 may be viable (as well as T17 of course) provided you
select a company from the prescribed industry sector. My advice is: don't rush into doing any topic think carefully about it and other topics and the various requirements needed to pass. Also remember if you really want to do T6 you MUST spend a lot of time in preparing your questionnaire and planning your work otherwise your efforts will be misdirected and time wasted. However on the plus side we do have at least one contributor, Batala, who himself did Topic 6 successfully so between us he and I will try to help where we can if you do want to choose this topic.
The OT team, our moderators and contributors welcome you to the OBU Forum and we wish you every success with your Research and Analysis Project

Hi,
I am about to finalize my RAP but i have following two questions regarding RAP (Topic 8) submission:
1. In the RAP checklist point 2 mentioned that “All marking is now anonymous so please ensure you have you NOT included any mention of your name in any of the project documentation submitted”
Now my question is doest it ask to delete my name and only put the ACCA reg no in RR, SLS and Presentation files ?
2. Is that necessary to submit financial statements in pdf file? Since In my excel working I have inserted the financial statements of both main and comparator which I am going to submit anyway.
TIA
Hi Tia,
The information pack says not to include your name anywhere, and only include your ACCA number. This should be on all of your documents.
I've found the pack contradictory in terms of the topic 8 FS. One page says include the PDF document, and the other says only include relevant pages as the marker doesn't want to read all the large documents.
What I have done is extracted the SOFP and SOPL on to and excel in my appendix, and then on 6 further appendices, included a PDF document link as an item. On all of these I've provided direct links to the organisation and is comparators website, so that if anything goes wrong, they are still able to find the document. These also link in to my ratio calculations in my appendix to show my workings and ability to use Excel.
You can insert an object on excel by going to home >> insert >> object, click 'insert adobe PDF' and click 'display as icon' and name it. It'll take you to a file explorer, select your document. This means that all the information is there for the examiner if they need it, but if they only want the minimal then I've extracted it.
Thank you @Tonim, It is helpful. Just one more thing to clear.
Should I take financial statements from the annual report? The original annual report of main company is landscape and the comparator's one is vertical page size. Will that be a major problem?
Hello,
Physically enter the amounts in to excel and utilise summing etc - it won't matter as you'll be formatting it yourself and the annual reports are only for further information.
Update: was able to submit, now not able to pay. I just go to a new page when I click ‘pay your submission’ and it says ‘invalid’.
I’ve emailed OBU again.
Just paid the fee, it wasn't possible yesterday. And Turnitin review and download is also there again. I wasn't able to view my submission before.
Now let's hope for the best.
It's worrisome for me and quite frankly, I am tired. I have chosen Volkswagen as a company and my mentor said it's a good choice but they produce "commercial vehicles" too. I tried but only found "Group financial statements".
I could not find individual financial statements for the competitors.
I tried to work on other companies in other applicable sectors but due to data gathering limitations, and already time spent on Volkswagen, no other company seems to work for me. Please clarify this confusion for me, should I go ahead with Volkswagen? I don't want to fail my RAP due to wrong company chosen.
I have also used Volkswagen
Just to warn you - a lot of their balances do not makes sense... an example that pops in to my head is that their 2018 balance sheet, page one, do not sum, and are 1m out.
second thing to consider is they report under German GAAP, and you will find it difficult to find another in the industry that report under it. I read about it online.
You will find most motoring companies also produce commercial vehicles.
What do you mean you can't find other individual financial statements? provided you choose a large company, Honda for example, which are listed, the FS will be on their website for investors information.
I'd recommend not submitting this period, particularly with Volkswagen, who I had to contact to get some clarity on their FS - I'm unsure you'll get a response and be able to analyze sufficiently prior to submission. Do not rush it.
Nope...the individual subsidiary companies produce their financial statements to be consolidated...I could only find the consolidated financial statements in the annual reports. This is a limitation.
Volkswagen can be an option for lot of people in the current environment because of the information available easily.
I used the Volkswagen Group Financial Statements - OBU day nothing against it.
My interpretation is that you should not choose a company who solely produces, say, RVs.
I have submitted mine now and I did so much work on it, and my mentor did not object to my choices.
I used one of the top 10 motoring brands according to an online article. I found financial statements quite easily. If not, you could always contact them and ask?
Good luck, Thanks.
Hi All,
I need help about my concern related to my submission, for OBU Project
Submitting Project:
after uploading all the documents, i wanted to check files as view, but RR and SLS files uploaded via Turnitin are showing as 00KB or no view, while i can view other project files.
I had successfully uploaded my RR word document, but it's not showing in the "views"
is it nothing to worry about? are you guys seeing the same issue? due to turnitin or what.
please let me know, thanks
I think one of my students had the same problem. The report and SLS files go into an interface as uploading via Turnitin is not instantaneous and they tend to be held in a queue. Check in a couple of days and there will probably be no issue
Hi.I have two queries
As information pack states to use 1000, 2000,4500 words in part 1,2 and 3 respectively but can we use some less words in part 1 and 2 and can utilise these words in part 3??
Is referencing also the part of word count. For example if we wrote profit increased by X amount for any Y reason(annual report)
As I have reffered annual report here so the annual report written here is also the part of word count?
Hello Champ,
Q1, Yes this is alright, provided you don't skip a key requirement of each part.
Q2, Yes the refrences are inclusive, you are to use the word count in the status bar on ms word, you may choose to make an allowance for words used in images especially if you have quite a few in your report, as these are not captured by the word count.
Hi, I just submitted my RAP today.
Can anyone tell me that were we supposed to just write our mentor's name. I only wrote her full name and doubt that it could suffice I mean how will they know who it exactly is, or was did I make a mistake by only entering name.
Secondly, my RAP file which originally had 7479 words, the system showed it has 7451 and for SLS it showed 1962 rather than 1990. Can someone guide what could be the issue. Has a part of my files been cut off? Or is it nothing to worry about.
Thirdly, I wasn't asked for which period I wanted to submit, I hope it is automatically submitting for this current May submission.
Also right after submitting, I logged in again to view my files but under RR and SLS, a blank file with 0kb size was showing.
Thanks alot to whoever tries helping me out ??.
hi all
What are all the items we should include in our spreadsheets?
As per the Assessment Criteria make sure with the spreadsheet that you have
" created and submitted a spreadsheet file (which incorporates and clearly demonstrates use of varied formulae)".
Hi all,
I failed in my RAP in the last period (P39) and i am going to resubmit it this in period.
I passed in SLS and failed in RR. The information pack says that i do not have to submit SLS when i am resubmitting as per the above criteria (pass in SLS and fail in RR).
As i tried to submit the project, I could not submit it because a message pops up saying “ i have to attach the SLS before submitting”.
Also, there is no specific place to attach Resubmission Statement, hence i attached it in Appendix.
Anyone else who is resubmitting facing this issue? Do I really have to attach the SLS document and presentation even if i passed it last time?
Please suggest me what can i do to submit my RAP.
Is table of content the part of words count?
Yes, it is.
Every word from the title page till the end of conclusion is included in the words count, including the words in the pictures and graphs.
Appendices and references in the reference list are excluded.
My understanding is that the words in graphs are not included.
Hi Jinaa26
As for this issue, I had the same issue with my RAP. I had passed my SLS in P39 submission, but i could not proceed to submission and payment without submitting the SLS.
So, I sent an email to OBU regarding this, and they told me to submit a Word file in which I explain that I had passed the SLS in the previous submission, and hence, have not submitted the SLS. Then, you could submit this file instead of the SLS.
This is what OBU suggested. hope it helps

@oesj said: My understanding is that the words in graphs are not included.Hi Oesj, The RAP information pack actually tells us that all the words in the graphs, figures, images should also be counted towards the 7,500 word limit. Hence, I guess it would be better to count and include the words on the graphs and other such figures, rather than risking OBU markers not reading our Research Report's beyond the 7,500 word limit.
Hi all!!
I have just already submitted RAP, SLS for 5 days. However, my word count for RAP is more than 7,500 words. Please help me does it impact my result significantly? I am worried about that, this is the first time I submit.
Thank you so much.
Markers can stop marking at 7,500. If you are only about 50 words over the limit this may not have any real impact. However if ALL of your Conclusion falls beyond 7,500 you could be given a 'technical fail'. In effect this means that you would be viewed as not having produced a Conclusion which is a mandatory, because it was not within the text marked.
Where most of your conclusion came before the cut-off you should be OK.
The above also applies to those topics (usually ONLY those that required primary data and therefore does not usually apply to topics 8, 17 and 20 but would apply to Topic 6) where recommendations are mandatory.
Greetings trephena,
I need some clarification with the eligibility requirements for OBU and would appreciate your help.
I was set to attempt my AA and FM papers this July 2020. but due to Covid restrictions, the exams have been cancelled and postponed to Sept 2020. Initially(Assuming I passed the papers), my plan was to start working on OBU RAP right after the July sitting and to submit in the November session.
Since the exams have now been postponed, would it be allowed, or even advisable that I start working on the OBU RAP from now(June 2020), ie, start with the report and aim to submit in November, and have my September sitting simultaneously too.
Is there a deadline by which i should have completed my papers before submitting RAP in the November session.
Thank you.
Yes you should be able to submit in November if you have passed or been exempted from F4-F9 (or of the equivalent) This has been confirmed by the University in the latest newsletter to mentors:
"Students who pass an exam in the Sept sitting (results released in Oct) can submit a RAP in Nov 2020"
