Advancing the quality of the OBU - OpenTuition Recommended OBU Mentors

Oopentuition_teamAdmin11y ago
Those of you who are regulars to our Forums will know that we always want to provide you with the best service we can, so we are really pleased and proud to announce our new initiative to "Advancing the quality of OBU” We receive many, many requests to recommend great mentors but this puts us in a difficult position as while Trephena, our Forum Moderator is willing to answer questions on the Forums, she cannot take on personal students for mentoring. So we wanted to remedy this situation – the problem though was how to find mentors that truly are world class so that we could really advance the quality of your OBU experience while offering very high quality mentoring that we can endorse with total confidence. So going forward we will provide details of first class mentors but only mentors whom we think are good at what they do and have a proven track record to match would be on this list in the future.

OpenTuition Recommended OBU Mentors

I guess I just can’t wait till September to show my appreciation to the Learning Luminarium! Living in North America, with a handful of ACCA peers, most of the journey I was by myself. So when I started planning my RAP, I really wanted to have a local mentor who can meet up with me regularly. But before I made my first contact, I checked recommendations from Opentuition. Then I found the Learning Luminarium was the most recommended mentor. Reading through other students’ experience, I felt Learning Luminarium has all the quality I want although they’re located in Singapore. I was proved right! During past year, Irwin was guiding me through the whole RAP process step by step. He was so professional and extremely patient. I felt so fortunate to have Irwin as my mentor, someone has a lot of experiences and same time has very good judgement. Without his guidance, I don’t think I can come this far. Right now, I’m all DONE and READY to submit! ( I know, the portal is not open yet) I’m confident in my RAP, and I’ll come back to this forum in September when the result is released! Good luck everyone :-P

I just received an email from OBU today that I passed the rap for period 37. So I guess period 37 results have been released to everyone else as well. It was so unexpected since I was really nervous about my rap but my mentor, Irwin from the Learning Luminarium, was extremely helpful. I could NOT have done it without him, to be honest. He was very professional as well as super friendly with me which made it comfortable to discuss the entire project with him. It was my first ever research report to write so I applaud his patience since I asked a lot of untimely questions, which regardless of our 12-hour difference, he immediately answered. I do not know what grade I got, I'll update that as well as soon as I find out myself. For any other student who is thinking about which mentor to choose, I suggest going for the Learning Luminarium, especially Irwin. There would be no disappointment. Best of luck to everyone for the current and future periods!

I have just passed my OBU degree on my first attempted and I would like to thanks my mentor Irwin Loh who is very familiar with the requirement and expectations from the examiner. Remember that for the first draft of my RAP was very bad and I feel like giving up but my mentor Irwin was very patient and encouraged me and provided me a lot of tips and guidance to help me, and after a few rounds my RAP finally on the right track. my mentor Irwin almost work at 24/7 and replied me email and Skype very promptly to answer all my questions and comments so that I can revised and rewrite my RAP in time. I highly recommend my mentor Irwin from Learning Luminaries and he is very professional and experience. at last if you want to pass please look for Irwin and I believe that every call or you spend is worth.

Just received confirmation from OBU that I have successfully completed my BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting. I would like say thank you to Mr. Irwin for all his support and guidance throughout my entire journey. Initially I was nervous since it was my first time ever doing such research and analysis project. But Mr. Irwin assured me and as I started to follow his advice, I realized that everything started to fall into places. He is very professional and patient. He was always available through WhatsApp and email. He promptly replied back whenever I asked him about something. He read my reports thoroughly everytime I submitted the revised copies and no wonder asked all the critical questions which helped me to push myself beyond my limit. William Arthur Ward once said "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." Mr. Irwin, you have inspired me. Thanks, Joydip

@lingling2000 Hi Ava, Thanks for your pre-results testimonial (Its a delight to see a student so happy, even before the results are out!) It was a joy to mentor an earnest and hardworking student like you - our guidance and suggestions would not mean anything if you did not put in the hard work to act on them! All the best to your submission and do keep me posted on the results! Wishing you the very best, Irwin The Learning Luminarium

@seerat @meimeiheyear @duttajoydip Hello my friends, Fantastic news to hear that you passed and thank you for the very kind words! To be awarded the degree is no mean feat, I could see the intensity and devotion you had so that your report is of the highest quality. Congratulations again and I trust that more than the degree, you also acquired mindsets and skills that prove integral for your future endeavours! Thanks for sharing your experiences and being living examples of the firm's motto to "Pass first time. Pass well." Wishing you the very best, Irwin The Learning Luminarium

I passed my research project on my first attempt. Many thanks to my mentor, Mr Adrian Tan from “The Learning Luminarium”. I highly recommend him as a mentor! I could not have made it without his guidance and support. He is very professional and knowledgeable. I've tried to complete Part 1 and 2 of RAP by myself before finding a mentor and to be honest my first draft was terrible. However, his advice made a lot of difference in improving the quality of my RAP. Instead of spoon-feeding me, he guided me to get to the answers by myself, encouraged me to be independent learner. He always challenged me to think deeply and more critically. I’ve learnt a lot from him during the RAP. He always responded to my email promptly and made critical comments on my work so that I could correct my mistakes in time. The whole mentorship process went very smoothly, and I was able to finish my RAP within 2 months. It is definitely a great experience to learn from Mr Adrian and I would like to thank him again for being a fantastic mentor!

It was a great opportunity to have such an amazing experience with my mentor Mrs Gillian Moorse . That was my second attempt as the first attempt was taken by another mentor and i was loosing hope due to type of companies i have chosen which made my RAP even more challenging. First she provided me with enthusiasm by forming a plan and approached guidance to start with ,which made me excited to began to put my ideas and work on my self .it was very challenging and she was very patient and keen to ensure answering all my doubts within short period. She reminded me from time to time that iam on the right way when at the begining felt its somthing so far to reach due to my tough case . She is a real professional mentor not only due to her competence in performing the mentoring work but also by providing the moral support and by simplifying the complexity i went through . I highly recommend Mrs Gillian moorse to be your mentor .Anyone will know and experience her professionalisim if wished to get her mentoring support Thank you Mrs Gillian for making this happen :)

Bonjour from Paris, I am delighted as I received my OBU RAP result. I passed it at the first go and I would like to take the privilege to say something about my experience. First of all there is no short cut and passing the OBU RAP demands a lot of energy and hardwork. But all of these hardwork will not create any value if you do not have a proper guideline on writing and presenting the report. I want to give all the credit to Opentution for creating a forum like this. More importantly, I found my mentor from this forum. I believe Gillian Moorse is a mentor who shaped me for the successful completion of my project. It’s a privilege to be her mentee. I never felt she was far away from me. She reponded immideately to my questions and provided me with constructive feedbacks. Once again thank you Opentution and Gillian for helping me out. Good luck to all of you who are going to submit for the period 38 and onwards.

I am so grateful to my mentor Gillian Moorse, as I have just passed the RAP at my second attempt. Having had another mentor the first time around and feeling really dissaponted with my failed result, I wanted to try a different mentor. I decided to follow Open Tuition advice and chose Gillian. She was extremely helpful. She took the time to read my RAP in detail and she gave me advice tailored to my report. With my previous mentor I didn't get straight answers whenever I asked a question but with Gillian I felt she really took the time and answered my questions in full. I really recommend Gillian to anyone looking for a mentor. She is very knowledgeable and makes the whole process easier.

I highly recommend Learning Luminarium to everyone. I have passed my RAP at the first attempt and I believe that at least half of my success is thanks to them. My mentor , Irwin Loh was absolutely exceptional throughout the whole process. Irwin really has the knowledge of the RAP requirements. He was available on mail, Skype and WhatsApp. He replied to every single of my emails within hours, giving constructive feedback on my work. His guidance and tips were invaluable! Irwin kept reading my RAP, challenging it and giving tips which enabled me to consider my findings in a broader context. Irwin truly is the perfect mentor and if I was to choose again, I would go for him every time. Thank you Irwin!

Congratulations to everyone that has passed in Period 37! These posts are a pleasure to read and I really wish I had the same enthusiasm towards my mentor experience. My mentor was not part of the open tuition or Learning Luminarium, but I wish I had gone down that route. I do not feel I had the same mentor experience as what you are all describing. Yes, I did receive what was required in terms of meetings etc. but I do feel like I was a number, and not really of any importance. Even when I emailed to advise I had passed the response was, 'Thanks for letting me know', - a little deflating! I have always checked through these forums through my previous ACCA studies but just did not think to come here for OBU mentoring and guidance until after I had submitted my Period 37 project (actually not until just before the results were due). I did pass the project, and I received a C grade, which I believe could have been a lot higher with a better mentor experience. Having said that, a C is all I needed to get the First Class, so I know I should not be disappointed, but I can't help but wish I had one of you guys as my mentor.
GMGillian M7y ago#104
@kerryb7 - first of all, many congratulations on achieving a First Class honours degree - that in itself is no mean feat! So well done! I am sure that both The Learning Luminarium and I myself (absolute mentoring) would like or thank you for pointing out that there is adequate mentoring and there is great mentoring and as Open Tuition recommended mentors, we strive for the latter. Great you passed and got your 1st Class Honours and you can be justly proud but one of my biggest joys was for Shaima (who has posted above) and students like her who have almost given up hope. They have to pick themselves up from a fail and in her particular case, getting a mentor who understood what was required and was able to rebuild her confidence was critical to a successful resubmission. That I believe is the difference between Open Tuition recommended mentors and the 'rest of the pack'.
KKerry7y ago#105
@GillianM - Thank you, Gillian. Of course, I am very pleased I did not fail, but I would definitely have requested the expertise an Open tuition approved mentor had I needed to resubmit. You have hit the nail on the head. There are adequate mentors, then there are great mentors.

Hello all, I'm May from Malaysia. I passed my OBU RAP for the fist attempt and is very happy that i have chosen Gillian Moorse as my OBU mentor. I found out her contact from opentuition and she is very responsive and helpful to the questions being raised in the forum. She went through my draft RAP in details each time i submit my draft copy and to correct me and raised questions for me to think and research more on the topics i choose to achieve the criteria needed. She is responsive to my email and replied to my questions being asked in details and also very helpful. As i was taking OBU RAP after 4 years of finished my acca papers, I'm a little worry that i might not be able to catch up with the topic i choose. But Gillian was helpful and forward me some study material for me to brush up some knowledge way before our mentoring begin. With Gillian help and her assure to pass (with our own effort and dedications too) , sure we will pass ! I highly recommend Gillian Moorse as your OBU mentor.

I have passed my OBU RAP on first attempt in period 37. Many thanks to my mentor - Irwin Loh. He guided my trough the entire journey. Many times he challenged my opinions and approach to the preparation of RAP so I could re-think and increase it's quality. He went trough my draft project and suggested which parts I should focus on more thoroughly. I would definitely recommend Irwin as a mentor for students who are going to prepare their projects in forthcoming periods.

I passed on first my attempt! Many thanks to Mr. Irwin from The Learning Luminarium. the mentor-ship I received him was beyond my expectation. Irwin provided much constructive criticism and challenged my thoughts and ideas for relevance and validity to my research objectives. This motivated me to probe deeper into my research to be able to address questions that I anticipated would come up in our meetings. He was also very patient, encouraging, knowledgeable, and flexible with time schedules. The RAP comes with challenges like any other research project. However, it enabled me to grow a tremendously and develop the professional and technical skills needed to advance in my career. i would definitely recommend The Learning Luminarium to students looking for a mentor who is effective and is interested in seeing students pass on their RAP on first attempt. Thank you Irwin for all your support and encouragement .

Many thanks to Mr Irwin Loh from Learning Luminarium that I’m able to pass my OBU Rap project with first class honour!! One things i can say about Mr Irwin is that he is very friendly, patient and promptly reply to all the questions and emails. He will always get back to me whenever he have time, if he can’t get back so soon, he will always notify the student 1st. Throughout the mentorship by Mr Irwin, i learnt to see things from different perspective and think out of box, as it’s critical to get a PASS for OBU Rap. Definitely recommend Irwin as the mentor for OBU RAP!!

Hi Irwin, I just got the result of my RAP, I passed! It's grade c but I feel so relieved! Without your help I wouldn't be able to make this happen in my first attemp. Thank you again!
Vvazuu6y ago#111
Just received my OBU result for period 38, and have passed! Thanks Adrian for your guidance, gratified to be under your tutelage.
VVictoria6y ago#112
I have received my result for period 38 and passed first time! I was shocked to receive an A grade for my report. I found the whole thing very daunting at the start and struggled to begin with- reading and writing not being my forte (i am more of a numbers person). I can honestly look back and say if Gillian Moorse wasnt my mentor I doubt I would of got the same grade, or perhaps even passed first time. What better person to be a mentor than an ex marker. She is extremely knowledgable in all aspects and will guide you through it all step by step. I'm so pleased to now say I have finished all my studies!

Finally passed my RAP on 3rd attempt. Many thanks to Gillian Moorse for great guidance. If only I had discovered her on my first or second attempt. What a great mentor

I have received my result for my RAP and am delighted to have been awarded an A grade. I would like to strongly recommend my mentor Adrian from the Learning Luminarium, who was friendly, professional and always prompt. He offered excellent support and advice throughout and made what initially seemed a daunting task to me into a much more manageable experience. Thank you!

I passed my RAP on first attempt, I got a grade B which was what I needed to achieve a 2:1 degree. I think I completed the project in just less than two months while working full time. I couldn’t have achieved this without my mentor Gillian Moorse. She was supportive throughout and very knowledgeable. I’d never written any work like this so I needed lots of guidance. To start Gillian provided several documents that posed questions and got me thinking in the right way to approach the RAP, and then continued support throughout with video calls and email. We also had set reviews to ensure I was on the right track. I think Gilian was slightly more expensive than other mentors I initially looked at but well worth it, she has a lot of experience and is generous with her time. I’d recommend her to anyone. Joe
Mmuphtau6y ago#119
Hi Gillian. I wish to have you as my mentor. Please confirm your availability.
GMGillian M6y ago#120
Thank you for your 'vote of confidence'. It is now though getting a bit late for May submissions (in fact I also limit the number of students so that they receive the personal service they need). I believe other reputable mentors do the same so you may find that unless there are pressing reasons (e.g. you only have the one submission opportunity remaining and it must be May) most mentors will want you to work towards a November submission now. To contact an Open Tuition mentor you need to go through their websites (if you go to page one of this thread you will find links to both mine and that of The Learning Luminarium and from there contact details). For other mentors there is a list on the University mentoring portal or email OBU and request the list. [I do have a colleague who is still on the marking team who may still have some capacity so use the above details to email my website direct]. However I think that you would need to start on your work immediately and know you have the time to commit to it fully over the next 2 months if you are to be successful with a May submission whomever you used as a mentor. Good luck!
