Topic 6 - Motivation

@ekpeti - To pass T6 you need to ensure your data collection is robust. Too many students make up survey results but it is obvious to experienced markers who though they rarely actually accuse the student of forging the results, the markers will pull the methodology apart and say the data is unreliable. This then ends up will fails for [2]Application, [3] Evaluation and [6] Information gathering. The way to pass T6 is to set out the motivation theories in Part 2, use them to design relevant questions, test out the questions to ensure they are clear and people understand them, conduct a real survey (and don’t invent one and make up the data). Then in Part 3 analyse the results and tie these back to the theory, presenting the results in graphs and charts and discussing how it fits – or does not fit – with the general motivation theories.

@dels - read my answer to ekpeti - just don't play the markers for fools they can spot when data is made up instantly. Too often questionnaires are written in poor ungrammatical English, specialist terms are not explained and there is no way the results claimed could be true. Read up on how to collect Primary data properly and test out the questions in a pilot survey and ensure that you include in the appendices a copy of any questionnaire, the raw data and anything else that is relevant to your findings. It all needs to be clearly set out - your job is to guide the marker through your work so that it follows logically. (If you can't do any of this properly don't do it at all and attempt Topic 17 instead. The pass rate first time round for T17 is good and you have more chance of passing than if you are incapable of doing a proper survey and constructing a valid questionnaire).

@trephena. thanx for the response. looking at the other topics i think i am more comfortable with T6. i am just somewhat confused with the models, what models can be be used in this topic? the ones i know such as SWOT,PEST etc are related to business environment and i dont know how they would connect with a topic like this. I completely understand the need and requirement to use models but i am completely blank on models

@dels - As you wish but be aware that the T6 pass rate is only about 35% for first attempts rising to nearer 50% for resubmission ( versus about 67% for T17 first time and 90% on resubmission). This is invariably because of poor surveys and unreliable data collection by students submitting on T6. Models in the context of T6 are the various motivation theories. You outline about 3 of these in Part 2 and relate your findings back to these in Part 3 when discussing your results

@trephena, you are surely going to help me be in that 35% so i guess you and i are together till May so on the theories, i have so far picked on Herzberg and Maslows and you suggest i add a 3rd one? when i am discussing my results, am i supposed to refer to all the 3 theories?

@dels - I always liked Vroom -as I think expectancy theory does play a role in individual motivation and performance. (Such a brilliant name too, Victor Vroom -sounds like a fictional character :-) ) To be in the successful band of 35% do test out your questions first on family and friends to ensure they understand them -it also makes you realise that you need to explain specialist terms as if a question is not clear then people cannot give honest valid replies -just answers they THINK relate to the question which may not be quite the same thing. I always like a modern approach that goes beyond the theories too for some questions e.g. do you find your job stressful? How important is a work- life balance to you? This is because personally I won't do stress and work-life balance is very important in my life. I know someone else who feels exactly the same and told me they actually changed to a lower paid job in their organisation because it was less stressful, carried less responsibility but made them happier and more motivated. Classic theories are rooted in the 20th century so adding a 21st century dimension to your work will bring in some critical thought which is necessary for a good grade. It is harder to pass T6 solely for the reasons previously given but a T6 done well can get an A grade By the way Batala, our other Forum OBU moderator tends to advise on T6 as he submitted on this topic (whereas I have just seen the marker comments relating to failed students and know enough about primary data collection to know it is hard to do well unless you invest lots of time in planning and designing unambiguous questions)

hi @dels-T6 is part of the Transferable skills.You need to use technology to record,analyse financail data,to collect information from range of sources and to present research findings. You need to use BusinessModels/ techniques to assist in your research.Models include Motivational theories,so you need to use those theories in your Literature reviews. You must show evidence that you have been able to apply T6 through the use of Technology.When presenting your findings you can use softwares such as SPSS or even Excel Sheets. The goodness at these stage is that you are not required to carry out any hypothesis on the fifindings.Make sure you design your questionnaire in such a way that you will be able to obtain results which you will present properly. i hope this information will be helpful

@emolas it very possible to fail the SLS. You are given guidelines to the RR too but not everyone follows it.

thank you @prudy . guys kindly assist me on the best way to present my questionaire data on graphs and pie charts .M stuck on this one and I am not seeing the relationship of the questionaires and graphs esp considering the structure of the questions asked. (likert scale aproach).

@trephena need your help my questionnaire has 9 questions(another 3 questions regarding age, sex and experience), relating to three theories that i choose: vroom adams and herzberg are 9 questions enough? 3 theories are enough and the choice of theories is ok?

good day ,i need help on how to analyse data from the questionaires -my questionaire has 20 questions should i analyse each question one by one and draw a graph on each .also how many methods of data collection are required.will you fail if you use only one method .i cant see were its written in black and white in the information pack.

Hi Emolas, if you have 20 questions you need to analyse each one of them in turn one after the other.The drawing of graphs should be done in the presentation and description of results.i hope you are not confusing the presentation and descriptions of results with analysis.In presentation ,you are expected to put up the findings in Tables and Graphical formats while in Analysing you are expected to triangulate your findings. My Opinion on the number of questions,i feel the 20 questions are too much and 10 or less can still work coz you will spend lots of time analysing each question Regards Joseph

@omer The nine research questions are ok and use of 3 theorists is also fine.Remember that you need to find out other data sources such as newspaper ,articles,DVD,thesis just to mention a few as this will help support your analysis and conclussions Joseph

Hi Students, • Triangulation of data Triangulation involves using multiple data sources in an investigation to produce understanding. ideally, get your finding from each and every data sources you have used.eg newspaper ,article, magazines, strategic document etc and tie it up to the outcomes from one of the variables ie the motivation issue in question e.g surpervision.do this for each and every variable and then produce a meaning in other words, how many theorist talk about the same factor of motivation ,and how does it relate to your findings.is your findings supported by other researchers or not, then make a conclusion. @omerfayyazz When you look at the Topic theme "Critical review of key factors of employee motivation within an organisation "This can be regarded as the Main Objective. But when you look at Specific objectives, these are the ones which are specific to achieve and that is the reason why you have formulated the Research questions so that the answers to those question should help achieve the objectives set. In other words, what specific Objectives do you wish to achieve in your organisation. By achieving short term objectives will in the process achieve the main objective in turn? Remember that the Objectives should be SMART. Regards Joseph
