aite folks now am extremely scared...outta the 60+ posts, it appears that no one has even closely thought / spoken of Lewin's strategic change model i.e. unfreeze, refreeze etc & Lewin's resistance to change forces :)...I wrote that for Answer 1b...after reading all the feedback at ot...I think I just lost all the 15 marks :(
dont worry mate, i also used this model but forget its name so just mentioned three stages :) and put some comments using this model.

Hi there!
I used Lewin's models in question 1 part b (ii) I think? part b (i) was the change klaideoscope? I am hoping anyway!! :)
OMG.....i did not use BCG model for question 1, instead i used Ansoff's matrix.....I hope i pass...

same for me, I used Lewin model in 1 b (ii)...hopefully we get it right...or I lose totally 25 marks in Question 1 -.-..But in Kaplan text book, element of change management is in cultural web...this exam really makes me scare..
totally no hope..........prepare for another siiting
model may be reframing restructuring revitalising renewal
I only managed to answer around 75% of the paper.
It's magic if I pass (UU')
It's magic if I pass (UU')
I can really manage. Q1 a is BCG, Q1 b is (If you want manage the change, you have to consider the three stey) 1st is Type of the change- scope & nature of the change quarent and then 2nd step is The wider context of the change -Balogun Hope Hailey and 3rd step is Forces facilitiate and Blocking - Force Feild Analysis and I think icannot remember the questiona nr other are JSW- 3 step of Parantel Manager and then Ashridge Feel and Fit and then Emarketing of 5 Ps and then Q2 is Cultural Web and Mintzberg - Strategic APX -middle line- operation core-support staff-techno structure.
I make the correct answer or not....... i hope this paper will pass. i sit also P1 and P7, P1 is on the Margin, P7 well manage.

I don't think it was BCG matrix because that model deals with portfolio of products. What we had in the paper was portfolio of companies. I think Ashridge Portfolio was the correct model but I didn't use it because I was finding it tough to apply it to the scenario. And there was time pressure too. And it was only 15 marks. I couldnt spend an age on that. Just explained the contribution and performance of the three companies. Hopefully I've done enough to get good marks.
We were supposed to use BCG matrix as a conclusion, because we were supposed to comment on the Shoal plc. portfolio. Brief comments like Shoal Pro is a Star and the reasons behind it.

I used the same and think it was the most appropriate one, given the information in the question.
Most appropriate, yeah!
the scenario case is easy to understand and short.
In term of question, if u have memorised the framework such as cultural web, balogon context factor, it would be quite easy to asnwer

I feel the paper quite fair, not too difficult. But I did not complete it and hope to get 50, hic.
In Q1a, I use B.C.G model to identify the position based on their market share and market growth. ShoalFish is a "dog", ShoalPro is a "cash cow", ShoalFarm is a "question mark". In Q1b, I use Balogun. But not have much idea to analyse, :(. In Q1c, huhu, I cannot remember any.
I chose Q2 and Q4. I know e-business, marketing mix, but my mind seem go out, not much idea for this question.
I feel Q4 is the easiest. I seem use ACCA to write this case study. Q4a does not require any model or theory to analyse the benefit and costs of adopting e-assessment in AII. I did it last so only have 30' for this question, so stupid, huhu. So, nothing for Q4b. :((
Waiting to 22 Feb 2011...
I also used BCG. Also I tied it in with Life-cycle. I decided that ShoalPro is the "star" not "cash cow". Now I am thinking that the "cow" is more appropriate :(
I think for part A, as it asked to analyse the performance and contribution so BCG model was appropriate.
At the end of the day for Q1 b as long as you used a type of Stratigic Postion analysis model and for part C you used a stratigic choice model and be able to justify how to turn the company around with clear linkage with the case then there shouldnt be a problem, as part 1b&c never specified a model to use, and if you can justify how to turn the company around with out using a model you will have no problem, look at question c it was only woth 8 marks and it had proffesional marks so why would you go into too much depth all you needed was 8 valuble point to get good marks no matter what you use
guys i used the BCG but i called it the ashidge portfolio, i hope the examoner will forgive me
paper was reasonable i thought.
question 1 a was a simple Corporate appraisal i.e SWOT analysis with an evaluation of financial performance. Seemed simple enough.
1(b) was more tricky. i used the matix which discussed the extent of change vs impact. It doesnt have a name but it is in the kaplan texts as the strategic change model...its the one that uses revolution / evolution / re-alignment etc etc. I couldnt remember all the terms in the model as there are loads. But hopefull ill at least get half marks
the rest of the question was very fringe...i just guessed at an answer. I guess with p3, everybody's going to say something different so you'll get marks for coming up with something logical.
i did question 2 and 3 after that...tricky ones especially how physical evidence can help e-business but if you just mentioned things like being able to read the first few pages online or using user friendly colours you should be okay. they seem like silly answers but you'd be suprised!!!
Good luck everybody :)

I used the "DESIGN CHOICES" of the Kaleidoscope itself for 1(c)... i.e : Change path, Change start point, style, interventions & roles.... any comments..??
1(a) used BCG and some aspects of the "Directional Policy Matrix" (DPM)
1(b) the "Balogun & Hope Hailey's change kaleidoscope"
1(c) the design choices
2(a) just gave some rational & logical points and arguments
2(b) Looked easy n straightforward but had to really suffer o gather points
3(a) cultural web (was given anyway)
3(b) Mintzberg's building blocks (strategic apex, middle line, operating core, technostructure & support staff)
Unsure of the final outcome... just hoping for 50

Instead of BCG matrix and all the other models mentioned, I used SWOT and PESTEL in Q1 a. Am I very wrong or they can be used too?

"I think BCG analysis is not limited to a product portfolio, it can be extended to a company portfolio as well... I feel that it's the most apprpriate"

This question is about position analysis, BCG and SWOT all fit the profile. BC is relevant because it appears that the Corporate Parent has more or less a portfolio management parenting style. SWOT is relevant as it helps to forecast the future performance and challenges of the SBUs. Afterall, strategy is future looking. I applied only BCG but ideally should have used both tools.
hey i also used PESTEL in Q1 a , as i cudnt decide well, though at the end in conclusion i gave refrence to BCG as well, n at the end i had realised i shud av used BCG, but at that time time was too short to rewrite.
plz anyone tell me, will i get any marks in that 15 mark part????
or it was such a stupid blunder.
plz anyone there tell me

With PESTEL, I reckoned you would have identified the key opportunities and threats from the external environment which the SBUs are facing e.g One of the SBUs (think ShoalFish) had a Government quota limitation reducing future growth. I honestly think that should fetch some marks. All the best.
thanx for rply, but m afraid i'l fail.m under so much stress.
1(a) CONTRIBUTIONS , performance (FINANCIAL+non FINANCIAL ) , BCG by using ( MARKET SHARE to over all market growth which was given in data )
1(b) the “Balogun & Hope Hailey’s change kaleidoscope” ( only CONTEXTUAL FEATURES ie readiness , power , diversity etc )
1(c) the design choices ( change path change style etc )
1(d) the synergy , portfolio , n parental developer ( discussion about main features like FINANCIAL HELP , resources or overall strategic help
2(a) E business
2(b) E marketing
4(a) E- assessment benefits and disadvantages
4(b) u have to asses it generally using feasibility , acceptability ,suitability and other points similar !!!
exam was TOOOOOOO LONG !!! with many tricky stuff specially question 1 ...
2(a) just gave some rational & logical points and arguments
2(b) Looked easy n straightforward but had to really suffer o gather points
