As a moderator of the OBU Forum let me assure anyone who has found us for the first time that you are now within easy access of lots of great, reliable and sound advice about the OBU BSc Degree in Applied Accounting. Spend a bit of time browsing our home page and see for yourself the FREE advice and service we offer and don't forget to read our FAQs which I compiled with help from an actual experienced OBU marker : www.opentuition.com/obu And the news gets even better - our poll of Open Tuition students' results for submissions regularly shows that our students achieved a pass rate of at least 79% compared with the average OBU pass rate of 57% (we say at least because it is highly likely that many more who had passed did not bother to come back to vote so it was probably over 80%). In addition students who have submitted Topic 17 (Corporate governance) and used our advice on our T17 forum have reported some great results in spite of having little real mentoring guidance (both alfred [P29] and eminathsana [P30] passed at the first attempt and achieved B grades) and confirmed our help was invaluable in their success. We also provide a specific forum thread with helpful suggestions for tackling the Airline sector for Topic 8 so could be useful if you find yourself having to resubmit a previously failed RAP on this topic. NOTE prescribed industry sectors are changing and airlines will not be allowed from P35 onwards so no one submitting their first attempt or changing topic or company for P35 may choose an airline - and only previously failed students who submitted between P32 and P34 can use an airline based on their previous work. To solve problems first look using our search facility -just a few keywords will bring up relevant posts (remember a degree is about finding and researching for yourself!). Please try to select the most appropriate forum topic if you need to ask a question as it helps everyone to find it should they subsequently have a similar query. When you post a query it automatically will bring it to the top of the 'white' forum list so it can easily be found by everyone. However if you really can't find anything about your particular query then please post it on 'PLEASE HELP KEEP OUR FORUMS TIDY!!!!' where I will answer it and then post it to the appropriate topic. Many of our contributors including our Moderator, Ehsan, have done the RAP for themselves so can offer help from their own experience and I have more than 13 years experience of reviewing RAPS and advising students so what we DON'T know about the OBU RAP on this Forum could be written on the back of a postage stamp!!! Tired of being pushed to do Topic 8 by your mentor? Take a look at the Topic 17 Corporate Governance Forum - you may be surprised at how dynamic and interesting T17 can be! Our students achieved great success with this topic pre P35 often getting at least B grades. (The topic title changed then so it is still early days to judge the current position) but we still offer lots of good advice if you choose this topic (personal favourite of mine) One word of warning on the subject of mentors: we advise that you do not respond to any posts from individuals plugging their 'mentoring' services as from P31 all mentors must be OBU registered mentors so you must select one from the OBU list. (There is provision for any ACCA members to do the online mentoring course and become registered and this also counts towards CPD so you may be able to persuade a potential mentor such as a supervisor to become a listed mentor). We also advise all students to register on the OBU Mentoring website EVEN if you already have a mentor as OBU is putting a lot of useful resources on this site to help students like you! It is vital you do your work yourself and resist any mentor who offers you samples. OBU is actively targeting both mentors and students engaged in this practice. Several students have been stripped of the degree for this, mentors banned and at best you can be given at least GBP 600 penalty resubmission fee (it is set at double the normal fee) and at worst excluded completely from getting the degree and your case referred to ACCA for potential disciplinary proceedings. And do your spreadsheet yourself - again using one given out by the mentor can lead to misconduct issues if a marker detects you have based your work on a common spreadsheet. .. and on this subject please do not solicit actual work from another student -this is not just against OBU rules but could end up in ACCA disciplinary proceedings being brought against you too - besides there us no need to as the OBU Information Pack and Mentoring website and this Forum can provide you with much better advice. If you can't decide on a mentor (the OBU site merely lists mentors but does NOT recommend anyone in particular), then take a look at 'Advancing the Quality of the OpenTuition-OBU Experience' as we are able to approve one organisation that offers mentoring services based on their track record (details of them and comments made by their students can be found on that Forum). So if you are struggling to find a reputable mentor take a look- but you are under no obligation to use their services -we just offer it as an endorsement of assured quality. One final piece of advice - as well as many students choosng Topic 8 because they mistakenly believe they do not have many options, many more who don't have a local suitable company often go for Topic 6 on Motivation. The problem with this choice is it depends on a survey and the surveys are often very badly done (T6 consequently has a very low pass rate and very few students actually pass at the first attempt). If you have internet access then you may choose ANY company wherever they are in the world subject to the current RAP rules so T8 may be viable (as well as T17 of course) provided you select a company from the prescribed industry sector. My advice is: don't rush into doing any topic think carefully about it and other topics and the various requirements needed to pass. Also remember if you really want to do T6 you MUST spend a lot of time in preparing your questionnaire and planning your work otherwise your efforts will be misdirected and time wasted. However on the plus side we do have at least one contributor, Batala, who himself did Topic 6 successfully so between us he and I will try to help where we can if you do want to choose this topic. The OT team, our moderators and contributors welcome you to the OBU Forum and we wish you every success with your Research and Analysis Project Trephena - OT OBU Forum Moderator PS Although Open Tuition is completely free to use at point of use it does depend for survival on advertising revenue -we would therefore ask that you do NOT use an ad blocker. If you do but still want to benefit from our advice it would be good if instead you made a donation so that we can be around to continue helping future students just like we hope we have helped you! Thanks.

am submitting my RAP on November 2016. but am struggling to get the sources of information. How can I go about it? please assist
Ttrephena10y ago#62
Depends what topic you are doing. Use Google and look for the annual reports and use Google scholar to search for academic papers and articles. You mentor should be able to guide you further
EEyre10y ago#63
Trephena, Following your advice, I read through the forums and decided to do topic 20. I have been searching for an appropriate mentor- because this isn't a very popular topic and so the mentor must be quite experienced in order to guide me. Do you think that The Learning Luminarium has a skilled mentor who can specifically help me with this topic?
Ttrephena10y ago#64
Yes I would think so. However there is a misconception among students that the mentor is an expert on the subject whereas the mentor's role is one of more support and basic guidance (see the appendix to the Information Pack). However in this instance the mentors at the Learning Luminarium are also tutors so have a good understanding of the RAP requirements. I am sure you can email them with your query about whether there is a suitable mentor for Topic 20 and get an honest and no obligation opinion.

Dear Trephena I am struggling to select the T8 and T17 . For T8, there should be a lot of pp to do , so the std should be quite high compare to others topic and may not easy to pass ? For T17, I am quite interesting . Because firstly I was study p1 on 2015, but almost forgotten . Secondly ,English is not my first language, so I am worry about my written report . Now I have a problem of organisation selection . I am a Singapore student , so better to use Singapore company or doesn't matter ? And the country CG code use need follow the organisation are where come from ? Look forward to your reply . Thank you
Ttrephena10y ago#66
I will admit I am totally biased. I think T8 is rarely well done and I wish OBU would drop it as a topic! Students take a routine approach and think all it involves is ratio analysis plus a basic SWOT and PEST Analysis. No it doesn't - if done properly it needs to look at strategies -and thankfully markers are now insisting on this. So if you choose T8 fine but don't expect a good grade. T17 can offer the opportunity for a higher grade if you consider some of the recent issues in Corporate Governance. This is because application of critical thinking is necessary for a good grade whichever topic you do and there is more scope for this with T17. For this you look at the current issues that affect your company and discuss them from various view points as well as cover the more routine things. Risk assessment is an area too that should be considered particularly with regard to integrity of customer data and the potential security of it in the light of the many instances of this being hacked even in large companies

I tried adding this to the 'word count' forum but that seems to have been closed. Trephena I just had to make sure if are in text citations are also counted as normal words? I know that our reference list isn't part of the word count. Thank you for your help.
Ttrephena9y ago#68
I have looked into your issue about the word count forum and am temporarily posting my reply in both places. (In fact as someone had opened a second one only the duplicated one had been closed) Basically everything from the start of the front page to the final word in the Conclusions (and any Recommendations) is counted. This includes citations and the in text references. Some students try to get around word count issues by including information pasted as images in tables e.g. the SWOT analysis so it is not picked up by MS Word. Whereas a little bit of textual information from a copied chart or diagram may be ignored by the marker instances of this deliberate ploy to exceed the word count by creating one's own wordy images will not. The markers will estimate the number of words in the pasted images and add them back to the MS total and stop marking after 7,500. The requirements are for a Conclusion within the 7,500 words. If there is very little by way of a conclusion within the limit as calculated by the marker, the report is likely to fail. With word count problems my advice is to trim the beginning and superfluous material e.g. is a marker really interested in why you chose the topic/ company? - I very much doubt they care why and even bother reading the 100s of reasons from the 100s they mark as such information is not a component of the assessment criteria for the report (save it for the SLS); does the marker really need to know about primary data when you are not even using primary data? If the marker doesn't know the difference then they wouldn't be a marker in the first place!!!! In other words focus on what is relevant and important
EEyre9y ago#69
That's really great advice, I will definitely be following it. Thank you very much Trephena.

Hie trephena I need help with the last part of Part 2 of topic 8. How do I reference the business analysis models in the BPP books.
Ttrephena9y ago#71
Have you read all of our article on Referencing (all 3 parts) on our homepage www.opentuition.com/obu ?

@eyre, try Irwin at The Learning Luminarium. he was my mentor, he is awesome, and he has experience in mentoring T18 and T20!

Hi Trephena, I failed on my first attempt in P32. It was quite a disheartening experience as despite charging an exorbidant fee, my mentor had been irresponsible and barely helpful for most part of the project. I made an enquiry with TLL and was surprised by their prompt response and for taking the time to assess the work I had previously submitted when my mentor had hardly gone through my report. All I could do was try my utmost. Unfortunately, I could not scrap by with an overall pass. I had failed on 2 points for the RR - Point 3: Evaluation of info, analysis and conclusion & Point 6: Referencing and info gathering. Having since reeled in from the shock of getting an F, I have been looking intently for help in Opentuition and found a silver lining in the forums. Your advice on financial analysis will be especially helpful to my resubmission. Thank you for sharing.

Good day, I am preparing for my project submission in November and this forum has been extremely helpful but I have learnt that it is also common to fail which did not come as a surprise. What are the main reasons that usually cause students to fail OBU project.
Ttrephena9y ago#75
Referencing / information gathering and lack of proper evaluation and analysis are the usual reasons - and why I have produced articles on these on our homepage www.opentuition.com/obu The Learning Luninarium has also produced an article on common cases of failure with a link on the homepage to their article
Mmaham9y ago#76
Hi Trephena, can you kindly reply to my post in the referencing post
Ttrephena9y ago#77
@saberhagen - alas there are many mentors who do not understand the basics of producing a decent RAP - the reason why we will only endorse mentors who have an excellent track record (80% proven pass rate over at least the last 4 sessions)! With submission fees for P33 set at GBP 225 and at GBP 250 for P34 it can be a false economy to go for a cheap mentor who is not experienced, however as you point out a high fee is no guarantee of quality. We (nor OBU for that matter) have any control over the fees charged but personal recommendations are always the best way to find a mentor. I am confident that if you read and apply our advice on here and use a mentor with a reasonable track record to guide you, you will ultimately be successful. Good luck! :-)
MMan9y ago#78
I have failed my T8 in P32 and need to do re-submission. As mentioned in my research report, I must update my financial analysis for the latest published results. Does this mean that I need to change my research from "FY2012-FY2014" to "FY2013-FY2015"? This will affect my previous working a lot.
Ttrephena9y ago#79
@topone -yes you will need to update properly. A common complaint from markers is that students are lazy when it comes to resubmission and think all they have to do is update the graphs. No, if you will have to update your commentary too. You don't have to drop 2012 completely but you must include the latest statements available at 31 August 2016.

Hi Trephena, I would like to do TOPIC 2 (Evaluation of how introduction of new tech can assist an orgs in achieving its business objectives. Any advice? I am planning to Evaluate the company I am working for (PTC Ltd - a subsidiary that is 100% owned by a conglomerate company: Press Corp Ltd in our Country. Press Corp is both Listed locally and on London Stock market.

Hi, I found some line in resubmission guide for period 33. "From period 33 onwards, anonymous marking is being introduced to the programme therefore please identify yourself in any documentation using ONLY YOUR ACCA NUMBER and NOT YOUR NAME." Does this mean that I should remove my name from the RAP cover page and document name?
Ttrephena9y ago#83
That's the general idea. If your name is on the files then you are not anonymous. I suppose if you leave your name on then you are considered to have waived your right to anonymity. Either way it shouldn't really matter a lot!
SSteven9y ago#84
Hi, If someone do not pass the RAP in the first attempt, and then pass on the second attempt or 3rd, the (Hons) will be not show in the degree? It will be only BSc Applied Accounting or Bsc (hons) Applied Accounting? Or it doesn't matter? Thanks
Ttrephena9y ago#85
If you do not pass the report at the first attempt then you cannot get higher than a C grade pass. The degree if awarded is always an honours degree but the classification of honours (first, 2.1, 2.2 or 3rd) depends on the average exam mark and the RAP grade. This is set out in the Information Pack so please consult this if you need further clarification.

Hi there, I have just started with Open Tuition and came across this study option with OBU. I am absolutely amazed by the quality of the help, advice, notes and resources and now to find that we can earn an honours degree as well...So glad to have found this. The answer to my current dilemma and the start of a new career, I hope. Really looking forward to getting stuck in. Thanks everyone!
Ttrephena9y ago#87
If you are attempting to submit in May 2017 - Period 34 (not advised as work for a decent grade normally takes about 3 months part-time) then you need to read my urgent reminder on P34 submissions)
Sss25129y ago#88
Hi, I found this forum very helpful. i would like to re-submit my project this period, Period 35. Have the industry sectors (ICB) been annonced for this period? if so, where can i find them? Thanks much.
Ttrephena9y ago#89
Normally for resubmission (but only resubmission), you can use the P33 and P34 company you used previously when the industry sectors change. They are due to be announced in the new Information Pack but when I looked on accaglobal earlier today it was still showing 2016/2017. So available very soon I would think!
Sstynan9y ago#90
Hi there, does anyone know what date the industry sectors are due to be announced?
