As a moderator of the OBU Forum let me assure anyone who has found us for the first time that you are now within easy access of lots of great, reliable and sound advice about the OBU BSc Degree in Applied Accounting. Spend a bit of time browsing our home page and see for yourself the FREE advice and service we offer and don't forget to read our FAQs which I compiled with help from an actual experienced OBU marker : www.opentuition.com/obu And the news gets even better - our poll of Open Tuition students' results for submissions regularly shows that our students achieved a pass rate of at least 79% compared with the average OBU pass rate of 57% (we say at least because it is highly likely that many more who had passed did not bother to come back to vote so it was probably over 80%). In addition students who have submitted Topic 17 (Corporate governance) and used our advice on our T17 forum have reported some great results in spite of having little real mentoring guidance (both alfred [P29] and eminathsana [P30] passed at the first attempt and achieved B grades) and confirmed our help was invaluable in their success. We also provide a specific forum thread with helpful suggestions for tackling the Airline sector for Topic 8 so could be useful if you find yourself having to resubmit a previously failed RAP on this topic. NOTE prescribed industry sectors are changing and airlines will not be allowed from P35 onwards so no one submitting their first attempt or changing topic or company for P35 may choose an airline - and only previously failed students who submitted between P32 and P34 can use an airline based on their previous work. To solve problems first look using our search facility -just a few keywords will bring up relevant posts (remember a degree is about finding and researching for yourself!). Please try to select the most appropriate forum topic if you need to ask a question as it helps everyone to find it should they subsequently have a similar query. When you post a query it automatically will bring it to the top of the 'white' forum list so it can easily be found by everyone. However if you really can't find anything about your particular query then please post it on 'PLEASE HELP KEEP OUR FORUMS TIDY!!!!' where I will answer it and then post it to the appropriate topic. Many of our contributors including our Moderator, Ehsan, have done the RAP for themselves so can offer help from their own experience and I have more than 13 years experience of reviewing RAPS and advising students so what we DON'T know about the OBU RAP on this Forum could be written on the back of a postage stamp!!! Tired of being pushed to do Topic 8 by your mentor? Take a look at the Topic 17 Corporate Governance Forum - you may be surprised at how dynamic and interesting T17 can be! Our students achieved great success with this topic pre P35 often getting at least B grades. (The topic title changed then so it is still early days to judge the current position) but we still offer lots of good advice if you choose this topic (personal favourite of mine) One word of warning on the subject of mentors: we advise that you do not respond to any posts from individuals plugging their 'mentoring' services as from P31 all mentors must be OBU registered mentors so you must select one from the OBU list. (There is provision for any ACCA members to do the online mentoring course and become registered and this also counts towards CPD so you may be able to persuade a potential mentor such as a supervisor to become a listed mentor). We also advise all students to register on the OBU Mentoring website EVEN if you already have a mentor as OBU is putting a lot of useful resources on this site to help students like you! It is vital you do your work yourself and resist any mentor who offers you samples. OBU is actively targeting both mentors and students engaged in this practice. Several students have been stripped of the degree for this, mentors banned and at best you can be given at least GBP 600 penalty resubmission fee (it is set at double the normal fee) and at worst excluded completely from getting the degree and your case referred to ACCA for potential disciplinary proceedings. And do your spreadsheet yourself - again using one given out by the mentor can lead to misconduct issues if a marker detects you have based your work on a common spreadsheet. .. and on this subject please do not solicit actual work from another student -this is not just against OBU rules but could end up in ACCA disciplinary proceedings being brought against you too - besides there us no need to as the OBU Information Pack and Mentoring website and this Forum can provide you with much better advice. If you can't decide on a mentor (the OBU site merely lists mentors but does NOT recommend anyone in particular), then take a look at 'Advancing the Quality of the OpenTuition-OBU Experience' as we are able to approve one organisation that offers mentoring services based on their track record (details of them and comments made by their students can be found on that Forum). So if you are struggling to find a reputable mentor take a look- but you are under no obligation to use their services -we just offer it as an endorsement of assured quality. One final piece of advice - as well as many students choosng Topic 8 because they mistakenly believe they do not have many options, many more who don't have a local suitable company often go for Topic 6 on Motivation. The problem with this choice is it depends on a survey and the surveys are often very badly done (T6 consequently has a very low pass rate and very few students actually pass at the first attempt). If you have internet access then you may choose ANY company wherever they are in the world subject to the current RAP rules so T8 may be viable (as well as T17 of course) provided you select a company from the prescribed industry sector. My advice is: don't rush into doing any topic think carefully about it and other topics and the various requirements needed to pass. Also remember if you really want to do T6 you MUST spend a lot of time in preparing your questionnaire and planning your work otherwise your efforts will be misdirected and time wasted. However on the plus side we do have at least one contributor, Batala, who himself did Topic 6 successfully so between us he and I will try to help where we can if you do want to choose this topic. The OT team, our moderators and contributors welcome you to the OBU Forum and we wish you every success with your Research and Analysis Project Trephena - OT OBU Forum Moderator PS Although Open Tuition is completely free to use at point of use it does depend for survival on advertising revenue -we would therefore ask that you do NOT use an ad blocker. If you do but still want to benefit from our advice it would be good if instead you made a donation so that we can be around to continue helping future students just like we hope we have helped you! Thanks.

Hi trephena, Following the results of this session I am now eligible for OBU project. I have very little knowledge about how and where to begin so can you please direct me to a page where I can find step by step guide to where I should begin. Thanks
Ttrephena10y ago#32
@shuraim - start by reading all of section 7 of the OBU information pack (this is available on accaglobal and the oxford brookes websites) and also on our homepage www.opentuition.com/obu. Think about what topic you may like to do and who you will have as your mentor. You have to use a mentor so you may as well start with one as they should be able to point you in the right direction. There are now specific rules about which types of industries you are permitted to use for P32 and P33 submissions IF you choose Topic 8 or Topic 15 for your report. I can't repeat all the details here but if you look at the topic forum 'Topic 8 and Topic 15 - new rules' you will be able to read about them there. The RAP is very different from exam work so you will need to develop report writing skills and focusing on how to research, analyse and evaluate information. It is impossible here to go into much detail but once you get going we have lots of advice on our various forum topics and there are some useful articles particularly on Evaluation & Analysis and how to approach this correctly and how to address Referencing in our Open Tuition Ultimate Guide to Referencing - all on our homepage www.opentuition.com/obu
Sshuraim10y ago#33
Thanks a lot it was very helpful I've downloaded the information pack and going through it.
Ttrephena10y ago#34
Hi Fathima Have you looked at our Ultimate Guide to Referencing your RAP on our homepage www.opentuition.com/obu ? In particular take a look at the 'Golden Rules' as that may cover problems you have 1. Yes you may use n.d. for web articles where there is no date. Access date should be the latest date you accessed the site 2. Page numbers usually go in the text if different pages are used or just in the list if you only used one particular page (or the same pages) for all your citations e.g. pages 4-6. See rule no. 8 as I think that covers this. 3. It is better to pick one relevant comparator and do good detailed comparisons for 3 years with that than weak comparisons with several companies - unless there is some significant reason for using more than one comparator. Industry averages may be used as a bench mark as an alternative to one comparator
Ttrephena10y ago#35
@Fathima - no big ask here then! :-) here goes! 1. If the website article has no date then you use n.d. but after the link put the date you last accessed it 2. That method seems to be correct. Referencing inevitably takes up word count. Edit sections 1 & 2 is my advice 3. Reference to the book/ article in the normal way 4. Graphs and charts can be cross- referenced to the appendices but make sure it is obvious there where the info has come from in that appendix 5. Does (4) above solve this problem? 6. The rules on using latest statements are in the Info Pack. Limitations are discussed in Part2 of the RAP and where relevant in the context of a particular ratio in Part 3 7. Not sure what the exact problem is here - again cover any limitations as mentioned in (6) 8. Those are merely guidelines - part 3 in my opinion ( for what it is worth) would be at least 4,500

Hi guys. Just wanna ask few questions regarding RAP.. 1. Is it possible to start working on rap before taking and passing F7,F8,F9 in order to save time, lets say preparing for upper mentioned papers and RAP at the same time? But leaving the submission to the end. 2. Are we given topics either we create them by ourselves? To be honest i've never done any rap before and got no idea of how it looks like and how it should be done. 3. Are there any specific time limits as an allowable date of start and end throughout the year? 4.What if the mentor haven't been found or is someone taught the scheme via internet. 5. What are the specific requirements for the mentor? 6.Are there any web sites with rap sampe available? Thanks in advance
Ttrephena10y ago#37
I suggest that you read the OBU information Pack available on accaglobal.com or our homepage www.opentuition.com/OBU Our homepage also contains useful articles and you may find our FAQs helpful You must have a mentor to verify your work is your own and s/he MUST be on the official OBU mentor list. NOTE: OBU has exemplars on its website - DO NOT use material from other students or you could get into serious trouble.

I have a question regarding competitor... My Pharmaceutical company has published its consolidated Financial statements in swiss francs currency and its competitor has published in US dollars although they are both from same country,so i am having a problem doing ratio analysis and horizontal analysis.. what should i do
Ttrephena10y ago#39
Different currencies is not a major problem - please see my reply where I dealt with this issue previously https://opentuition.com/topic/mentor-advice-needed-for-obu-rap-topic-selection/ (currently on the 2nd page of our topic list)

Dears, I have done my last exam paper for the fundamental last month's March and wanted to do the RAP so my question is can I submit it in closest submission, which I think is May? or I should wait till Nov this year. My expectation to pass the F9 is high.
Ttrephena10y ago#41
In my opinion you have left it a bit late for P31. Personally I recommend spending 3 months (part-time but with concerted effort) to do a decent RAP. The marker requirements (e.g. standard of referencing) seem to be getting tougher and a higher quality of evaluation expected. There are some out there who get a C having spent just a month on it but I suspect most students who only allocate that amount of time probably fail and few if any get more than a C grade.
Former userFormer user10y ago#42
Thanks Trephena, I will try next submission, on the other hand, I wanted to choose topic one out the 20 and thought to write on the budgetary system of UNHCR since i work there therefore, can this be okey for this? I mean, Can I take a not for profit business for my RAP.

Hi, Forgive me if I posted this on the wrong place. Can't thank this forum enough for the knowledge gained so far. Special thanks to the moderators.I have tried several times to log in but failed.Hope others who had been trying like myself finally join this wonderful family
Ttrephena10y ago#44
Your difficulties in logging in probably relate to spamming attacks the site has recently experienced. Botnets, scammers (anyone who received personal messages from strangers wanting to become 'trusted friends' and seeking you to contact them via outside email beware - these 'people' are scamming networks not the gorgeous blonde ladies they pretend to be!) and spammers have forced OT to suspend the Personal Message facility.

HI, I am doing topic 8 on a banking company but am getting difficutities in dealing with ratio analysis.what are some ratios to calculate here and ways of analysing them since banking sector is completely diferent from other sectors. please help.
Ttrephena10y ago#46
Is this a resubmission as banks are only permitted for students who are resubmitting in P32 & P33 whose previous attempt was based on a bank? All other students MUST choose from one of the prescribed industries e.g. airlines, pharmaceutical companies or telecommunications sectors
Bblamoses10y ago#47
@trephena yes this is the resubmission. Please help.
Ttrephena10y ago#48
It is important that you address the marker feedback. For any T8 you should appreciate that you need to avoid a textbook approach but you should use models and ratios that are appropriate for a bank. This would be the CAMELS model in particular. (We have a special forum for a bank called something like Using a bank for Topic 8 - look at page 3 onwards of our forum topic list to find it). However ensure when writing you understand what you are saying and it is not full of technical jargon but properly explained. The usual 'rules' on a T8 apply - clear graphs, and explanations linked to the SWOT & PEST factors and NOT excessively issuing percentages and numbers to describe trend movements (and not just increases and decreases and by how much) but coming up with proper explanations with sound reasoning.

im going to resubmit tomorrow previously i failed in RR and pass the sls now in my account there is an option to upload the presentation file do i need to upload the presentation file? if yes do i need to update its dates and other figures ? or just leave this as it is
Ttrephena10y ago#50
You may need to load to complete submission but if already passed it won't be marked
Former userFormer user10y ago#51
@trephena but do i need to change its figures and years and all graphs
Ttrephena10y ago#52
No the Presentation won t be looked at -it's just a systems problem sometimes that if you can't upload without a Presentation you just add one so the system then accepts your files. If you want add an appendix called 'note to marker' and tell them that you have already passed it...
Nnhung10y ago#53
Hi, I intend to resubmit this November (P33). On P30 I have passed SLS for both part 8 and 9. So if I want to change the company now (since I realize that my previous company does not have enough analyst report in english for reference), do I have to submit SLS again.? I look through info package, and they put " If you have changed topic or organisation but havenot passed both sections of the SLS (sections 8&9 of the feedback sheet) then you will need to resubmit the SLS in full. " So I think I dont have to submit again, but Im not sure. Thanks
Ttrephena10y ago#54
Apologies for the long delay in replying. As you have cleared the SLS in full then you just need to submit the report. Although you do not have to do a resubmission statement I strongly advise that you at least read my article on this found on our homepage www.opentuition.com/obu This is because it is important to be aware of all your previous weaknesses to stand the best chance of passing next time and potentially avoid repeating the same mistakes Sometimes there can be a problem in electronically submitting when you have passed just one part of the SLS even when you have not changed company. In those cases I always suggest just uploading the Presentation or SLS statement file that passed just to get the whole thing to upload to the system. This seems to work (even though it will not be remarked if it has already passed) - it just keeps the submission system 'happy'
Former userFormer user10y ago#55
I am in process of choosing my company for the topic 8, the restrictions are not pleasing really as we are allowed to choose the subject organization/company from three sectors only therefore my question is about the Airline industry, can I choose Airline manufacturers for my topic rather than service industries like Emirates, British or Delta Airliners.
Ttrephena10y ago#56
No - aircraft manufacture does not fall within the industry classification which is airlines https://www.accaglobal.com/uk/en/student/exam-entry-and-administration/oxford-brookes-bsc-hons-in-applied-accounting/oxford-brookes-bsc-research-analysis-project-rap-submission.html
Aarijeta10y ago#57
Hi I would like to know if a Bank can be taken for topic 8. Thank you
Ttrephena10y ago#58
Why would you think that a bank would fall with one of the 3 categories that you MUST choose if submitting on Topic 8 when the prescribed industry sectors are airlines, pharmaceuticals and telecommunications? Unless it is a resubmission and your previous submission was on the same company you will be instantly failed if you submit on a bank.

Dear Trephena, I'm planning on giving the RAP in period 33, but I'm still struggling with selecting the topic. I'm divided between topic 20 and topic 18. I'm really interested in topic 20 having studied it in A Level business studies but I haven't done P1 yet so I don't know about any models etc. But I am willing to put in the hard work and do all the research on it. With topic 18 the advantage is that I've studied marketing quite a bit. Which one do you think has the potential of making a better project?
Ttrephena10y ago#60
That is,a difficult one to answer! With T18 you need to go a bit beyond the 4/7 P 's of marketing and also discuss market penetration strategies (Ansoff) and apply the Boston Matrix to the main products in the portfolio. With T20 you could use Carrols pyramid and Mendelow's Matrix as models. A good grade depends on the, application of critical thought and possibly that is easier with T20 because of the nature of the topic. However read up on the two topics if possible as well as the posts on our forums for T18 & T20. Before choosing T20 look to see what sources are available as you need some objective sources from outside the company. T20 should not be a 're-write or blind acceptance of the company's CSR report - it should question as well as support the views in the latter and where there is a difference it should consider the impact of this on the stakeholders
