An output is what is created at the end of a process. Your outputs might be cars made, training classes offered, people served in a restaurant., and grants funded. Outputs tell the story of what you produced or your organization’s activities. Howwever output measures do not look at the value, effectiveness or result of your activities. An outcome is the level of performance or achievement that occurred because of the activity or services your organization provided. Outcome measures are a more appropriate indicator of effectiveness. A hospital could measure the number of hip replacements it performs (output). Outcome would need measures addressing patient mobility, pain, readmissions etc.
