AARefurbishment costs - Green Co

Aaishu18h ago

Hi. Good evening. I have doubt in Green Co (audit risk) qn.

The scenario says The company began to refurbish the retail stores in order to incorporate cafes into each one. Refurbishment costs of $14.2m were recognised within PPE.

I have written

The company began to refurbish the retail stores and they have recognised the refurbishment costs of $14.2 m within PPE

There is a risk that some of the refurbishment costs may have been wrongly classified as capital expenditure and not as revenue expenditure resulting in overvaluation of PPE, understatement of operating expenses and overstatement of profit

The auditors response :

Review a breakdown of the $14.2 m to ascertain whether the nature of the expenditure is capital or revenue

Inspect supporting documentation, such as invoices, to confirm that the costs qualify for capitalisation rather than being recognised as revenue expenditure.

Is this correct?

Welcome to OT Aishu! I copie your query to this tutor forum where I can answer it.

Unfortunately I cannot "mark" students' answers (and I doubt a fellow student would attempt to mark it on the student forum), but I can direct you to resources so YOU can assess the worth of your answers.

As well as the advice in this thread https://opentuition.com/topic/aa-resit-self-study-or-tuition-provider (e.g. posts #11 and #12), I have written two articles directly aimed at helping you https://opentuition.com/topic/new-acca-exam-technique-articles-how-to-answer-controls-and-risk-response-questions

If you haven't already read it, I recommend the Read the Mind article https://www.accaglobal.com/content/dam/ACCA_Global/Students/fun/f8/Read_the_mind_of_AA_marker_WEB_v3.pdf - or if you have read it, maybe read again.

One thing to add - you mention "capital expenditure" and "revenue expenditure" and "capitalisation". ACCA considers these terms obsolete and they have been dropped from the syllabuses and exams. Consistent with IFRS the terms, candidates should be referring to asset expenditure v expense {in profit or loss) and asset recognition criteria. (The only "capitalisation" reference still used is in relation to borrowing costs in IAS 23 - but that is not examinable in AA.)
