I intend to study all the parts of the syllabus following reavelation by the examiners of lack of preparation as one of the reasons of failure in the exam. I have planned to just attempt exams set by Alex Watt, i.e. from December 2010 to December 2013. Will this approach in your opinion help me pass the ACCA paper P5?

That approach would certainly help you to pass P5. Question practice is essential.
