I was a Science teacher (Biology) for roughly 7 years. I did enjoy my time but I wanted to do something else, join the corporate world and meet more people. I wanted to learn more, form my character as I met diverse persons
Thoughts of moving into accounting didn’t last long in my mind because I thought
* Too late
* You’ll look confused
* You’ll look like an excited kid who thinks ACCA after a name is a big thing
* You’ll be making assumptions that You’ll quickly pick up a job
* You’ll even look ungrateful because ” you have a career as a teacher, others don’t even have a job)All the above “thoughts” just felt like “feelings”, feelings I couldn’t dismiss.
My wife is an accountant but she hadn’t done ACCA. I was searching for info for her concerning the ACCA to encourage her to take up the challenge. This was sometime in 2016. At around 4am in the morning one day I was sitting on the floor with my laptop. I read this post by an opentuition moderator with a name “alchemist” and a big change happened!
Here’s the link to the post below…..
https://opentuition.com/topic/can-i-self-study-the-answer-is-yes/
He had a BSc. in Chemistry (I in Environmental Science), never had anything to do with Accounting (me too)
He was a teacher with long hours at work (me too)
He was even doing a Masters degree (me too)
He decided to move into accounting even while teaching and at the time I was reading that post, he was an affiliate.
There I decided that if he can do it then I can. I moved into accounting while still a teacher…..I needed the money coz I had a family…..I wrote my first ACCA exams in December 2016 at about 31 (age)……the funny part is that I kept meeting students I taught in secondary in ACCA exam halls! Some always looked at me in shock!
At first I thought Accounting was just number crunching but I learned it’s more. That’s how I got hooked. Even with that I still strained (Double entry didn’t even make sense at first). Here’s how it went
F1,F2,F4,F5,SBL,SBR,AAA — passed all at first attempt
F3,F7,F8,F9,–passed all at second attempt
F6- 3 attempts (why did I have to do UK Tax? Not sure)
AFM- 4 attempts
Sometimes I passed courses that my former students who even had BSc. in Accounting didn’t pass (funny right)….. I was probably just hungrier and didn’t have money to spare!
ACCA is not the most important thing on life but we can use ACCA as an opportunity to learn DISCIPLINE (everyone needs it to succeed)
I’m 35 now, an affiliate….you’re worried that by the time you finish ACCA after 3/4 years you’ll be 40? Well know that even if you don’t do ACCA in 3/4 years time you’ll still be 40 lol
I’ll write about my experience in every exam in a subsequent post.
For now, if you like this post then please help me connect with “the alchemist”. I need to say a personal thank you! Help me tag moderators and whoever to help me find the alchemist!
Thanks!
January 25, 2021 at 6:54 am #607838I know he’s not a moderator here any longer.
By the way I’ll also write about the help opentuition provided me…….

February 11, 2021 at 7:08 pm #610082Thank You! Hopefully he’ll reply soon!
February 13, 2021 at 3:30 am #610188Thanks for sharing your experience! I myself started the ACCA journey in January 2020 whilst I never did any business subjects in school and I am currently working as a police officer. I have managed to pass F1,F2,F3,F4,F6,F7 all first time passes whilst self-studying using Opentuition and BPP practice kits. I am currently studying for F8 and F9 for March 2021 sitting. I am not the holder of any Bachelor’s degree and I hope to do the OBU program after completing level 2. My goal is to move into the accounting field after achieving those. Again it’s a great motivation to see others out there like myself who have completed the program.

i am a 23 year old and became an acca affiliate two years ago….. was forced into doing for some irrelevant reason to say here..
i want to go back studying science and will want to become an electrical enginner or computer science
i have done O levels in maths and bio chem phyiscs but do not have the A levels for university admissioni feel accountancy is very dry ….. like i dont even learn anything that useful… like its good for learning part time like how you did … i also didnt mind learning it … but i dont want a career in accountancy ..i worked for a year in it and hated it even more….and in more depression
didnt you enjoy your career in science ? if you would go back would you have chosen another science field ? or any other engineering field ?
April 6, 2021 at 5:11 pm #616110Abdullah……thanks! I won’t go back. Accounting gives me the opportunity to be in the business world and see how the world works! Funny enough I am not really interested in a long career in accounting…….We can chat some more!
April 17, 2021 at 8:45 pm #618050so not accouting as long term career and also not science teacher….. so what do you ideally want to do ? do you think at this age its easier to change your career ? do you not think that you will be paid like a fresh graduate with no work experience in accounting ?
some accounting jobs are just data entry…… and do you currently wok in accoutng ? how is your work ? do you like it ?
