Hi, I have come across a the following question in the BPP book,
The 1st batch of 50 units took 750 hrs to produce. If the total time for the first 16 batches was for 8500, what was the actual learning rate?
a.92%
b.89%
c.78%
d.85%the answer is a 92%, however I do not understand how to get there. the answer booklet shows the following workings
8,500 = 16 X 750 r4
8,500 / (16 X 750) = r4
r = 0.92 or 92%however i do not get 0.92 when i divide 8500 by 16×750, and i have tried dividing the answer by 4 which obviously doent work, can you please help me see what I am missing here.
many thanks
emersonJune 1, 2018 at 5:08 pm #455303The time for the 1st batch is 750 hours.
The average time per batch when they produce 16 is 8500/16 = 531.25
Given that 16 batches involves doubling 4 times,
531.25 = 750 x r^4
Therefore r = 4th root of 531.25/750 = 0.92
All of this is explained in detail, with examples, in my free lectures on learning curves, and you should study the topics before attempting questions.
The lectures are a complete free course for Paper F5 and cover everything needed to be able to pass the exam well.June 1, 2018 at 6:23 pm #455337Hi john
Many thanks for the quick reply, and clarification. I now understand how this calculation can be done.
Please note i have viewed all your lectures in relation the the f5 paper, actually, i revisited the lecture in relation to the doubling rule this morning before i wrote to you. But there is nothing in respect to the reverse calculation as in this example.
However, please accept my apologies if i have missed anything in the lecture which should have avoided me asking the question.
Lectures are really good and very easy to follow.
Many thanks emersonJune 1, 2018 at 6:33 pm #455344Yes it is in the lecture – maybe you did not watch both of the lectures on learning curves 🙂
Thanks for the comment 🙂
