Hi,
I am waiting for my F7 results but am planning on doing F8 and F9 this year. i’m trying to decide whether I should do both in the June exams or just do one in June and then sit the last one in Dec.
For anyone that has studied both of these – are these difficult subjects and what would they be like to do together? I work full time and tend to be very busy in work so i’m conscious that i don’t want to take on too much either. i’m also keen to just get the F’s out of the way and possibly start the P papers then end of the year.

2 exams per session is definitely achievable for a full time employee. (own experience)
F7 is a good supplement for F8. If you can refer to F7 in F8 exam it can impress the marker and help you pass the F8. But you can pass F8 without F7 knowledge also-
(just reasonable accounting common sense).Do you consider taking exams in March and September?
What I would do is to start studying F8 right now for a March session. There are still 2 weeks till results to be revealed.
If you pass F7 then great you are already ahead with F8 and soon you will be able to do F8 revision and practice past papers. You will get a feeling of the paper and be able to decide if you can add F9.If you fail F7 then it is a resit for you. Again you are already ahead with F8 and you can write a good combination of papers in March F7 and F8. With F7 you are only left with practice, leaving most of the time for F8.
Every subject is difficult in it’s own way it all comes down to individual preferences. I found F9 on of the most interesting papers to study. F8 requires a special ‘technical’ way of writing answers in the exam.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I hadn’t considered sitting any of them in March to be honest as I plan on attending The Accountancy School in dublin city centre, commencing end of Feb and going to lectures there. i’ve only ever studied myself at home when I was re-sitting F7 for the 2nd time and have never considered studying any of the other subjects myself without going to lectures. i’m assuming you actually mean to start studying F8 myself at home now (I don’t actually have any text books or anything at the moment).
I was going to leave the march session open to repeat F7 if necessary (which I really hope isn’t!) and then possibly go to lectures for F8 & F9 and sit them both in June which would then mean I could start the P papers and sit one of them in Dec.
F8 looks like it’s all theory (is this the case?) so I figured if one of them was mostly theory and no computational work and F9 involved mostly computational work then it wouldn’t be very difficult or tricky to study both together. The last 2 times I’ve sat the exam for F7 I was only doing F7 and nothing else as i wanted to give it my best shot.

Personally I’m not a big fan of plowing through a textbook. I did all exams by self study except F6 where I attended classes because i did my local variant.Currently waiting for results of my final exam. After F5 which was my first exam I have never looked into a textbook again – only in rare circumstances when I needed something more or couldn’t find the answer to my doubts.
F9 is like 50/50 discursive/computational – at least it used to be with the old format (no MCQ)
F8 can look very theoretical but the examiner is always looking for application. There will be some marks for knowledge repetition but not enough to pass based on only repetition of studytext. F8 may seem very boring and an ‘artificial subject’.
You have everything you need to pass F8. Look at the plenty of resources available on OpenTuition

6. Past Papers and their answersI really think it is doable for you to start with videos, OT notes and technical articles doing them at own pace and getting the feel of the subject.
What I mean is I believe you can sit either F7 & F8 in March (if u fail F7) or only F8 (if you pass F7).
Thanks Seagoat again for your advice. After having a long, hard think about it I decided I would sit both F8 & F9 in June. I hadn’t even considered starting to study now for any of them and I didn’t want to put myself under unnecessary pressure to sit a paper this March. i’m still debating whether or not to self-study F8 (my employer will be paying all the costs so not my expense). Work is crazy busy at the moment so i’d rather self-study one of them and just go into college 1 night a week for F9 so still just weighing it up.
