Hello sir, In december 2011 past paper Q1 requirement a it asks that “Analyse GET’s current strategic position from both internal and external perspectives using appropriate models and frameworks”. When i went through the answers i realized that no particular/specific model was used but a simple internal and external review was carried out. So do we have to use specific models only when we’re asked about and will we gain marks if we use no model ?
June 4, 2014 at 9:40 am #173556If it says use models you must use models. Note plural.
You don’t have to describe the model and you don’t have to go through all of it if the question say nothing about something. So you can write something like (not specifically for D2011):
External perspectives
A PESTEL analysis suggests that the economy should be improving and that the government will be supportive of this type of development. his should provide the company with valuable opportunities to expand.
A 4 Forces analysis shows that the company faces tough competition and that there are likely to be new entrants that will add to the competitive pressure.
Internal perspectives
An analysis of the company’s resources and competences shows that the company has a strong brand name that should enable expansion to be successful. However, the company is short of cash and will need to address this issue if it is to expand.

June 4, 2014 at 10:38 am #173574umer i was doing a question wamc of kaplan kit. it required to critically evaluate strategic position of the company. i used the strength and weaknesses but when i checked the answer it was a bit different. but examiner comment made it clear. As he said some candidates may have used value chain,6M’s model and some used Swot. and these all are acceptable.
June 4, 2014 at 10:42 am #173576I get you but i am talking about a question where it doesn’t ask for any module, can i get away without using any module and an overall evaluation?
June 4, 2014 at 11:32 am #173595You get more marks for using models. P3 is not called ‘Business Analysis – the Common Sense Approach’ though as always common sense is important. Models give academic respectability to your answer and should allow a better analysis to be done. When professional marks are awarded, many of these are for using models as that implies a professional approach, not just what you think up at the time.
