Dear John
I am working through past questions and stuck with this calculation. I just can’t follow how the examiner has solved the equation!
I’m happy with the values for MV D and MV E and the values for Ke (g) and Kd and 1-T.
I’m happy with 16.83%=Ke(u)+0.75x(Ke(u)-4.76%)x1785/1400
But I can’t follow how this is solved down to
16.83%+4.55%=1.9563 x Ke(u)I feel like I’m missing something which is clearly very simple, but the more I try the more confused I become. Please can you help explain.
Many thanks for your time
Laura
November 26, 2023 at 8:19 pm #695558Here are the steps:
16.83 = Keu + 0.75x (keu – 4.76) x 1785/1400
16.83 = keu + 0.75 x (keu – 4.76) x 1.275
16.83 = Keu + 0.9563 (keu – 4.76)
16.83 = Keu + 0.9563Keu – 4.55
16.83 + 4.55 = keu + 0.9563keu
16.83 + 4.55 = 1.9563Keu
Hope that helps 🙂
November 27, 2023 at 12:34 pm #695609Thank you. I can’t even begin to explain how frustrated I got with myself. And with it being the first calc, thereby underpinning the rest of the calcs and therefore a lot of the report and advice as well, it just really threw me.
In an exam situation, if I have another brain melt with what is essentially algebra, what do you recommend?
Clearly without the CoC to apply for further analysis, the resultant advice will be incorrect most likely. But is it better to put a note at the point I got stuck, chose a CoC to use in the later calculations and just hope for the best? Would I at least get some marks for correct application of technique in the rest of the question, which is better than nothing?!?
November 27, 2023 at 6:46 pm #695632Yes, you would get marks
Most of the marks are for proving that you understand what is happening, so if you do get stuck then carry on with an ‘invented’ figure and you will still get marks 🙂
