Hi everyone, just passed my F2 and F3 exams and now getting F1 and F4 done, but abit confused on which F4 variant I should choose, UK or Global? Checked BPP website to see the different materials and found they have 3 different F4 study text. Bit confused on F4 variants and study material to buy.

    Dear Heezay,

I strongly recommend you to opt for global one.
Not only it is easier and more interesting then UK law, but it also gives you a wider knowledge of law around the world.

Plus , the amount of cases is significantly less. You might even not need to mention any cases at all.

I studied and attempted Global one myself this sitting and many of my friends who choosed UK law, envied me.

So opt for Global and enjoy your studies!

Cheers ansi for replying, but what about recognition wise in relation to potential employers, do they favour one over the other or are they in equal terms, as I plan to work in UK when I first complete to gain experience and then plan to move abroad, but at the same time I do not want to be at an disadvantage whilst am here in the UK for doing the Global Variant. I cant seem to see anywhere anyone talking about these variants and choices etc??

Well, it’s hard to advise anything here then.

I would opt for Global, but it is my choice.
If you are going to work in UK then definately opt for F6 UK when u reach this paper, as for law , global one includes UK law , it just doesn’t touch it as deep as UK law paper. And as u are not going to work as a lawyer i guess, it would be okay.

I’ve never worked in UK, or a british company so it’s hard for me to say whether they check which law you studied.

People are actually always hesitating between these two, but majority don’t think at all, they just opt for UK because before u couldn’t find much materials for Global one …before .. and that’s it. Later some regret , some don’t … Try to find anyone here who actually works or at least lives in UK to discuss it.

But if u realize that u don’t have enough time for studies and you want to study law with enjoyment and ensure a pass, then opt for Global 😉

    good luck 🙂

It depends on what your long term plans are..if you want to work in the UK than go for the UK variant not Global as at the end of the day – what you study will be in help at your work.

    Dear Hezay

As you have mentioned, your long term plans are to work abroad, so gaining some knowledge about the international trade law governing the internaional commercial transactions etc would be of much help. Also now a days the business of all countries going global, having some knowledge about global commercial law and practice perhaps will make more sense.

I have seen students choosing variant papers relevant to the country they based in. However I am not sure wehether they may give you a satisfying answer as to why he has chosen that. In my opiniion , as I am based in India doing an international finance professional course, choosing indian variant papers does not made any sense to me as I am confidant that if I work in India I will learn what is being practised in India through the experience (Forget about employers will not consider only because you have no text book or exam exposure to the commercial law of land).

But what about the practice internationally? How do I come to know and from where I will be able gain that knowledge. (Of course from the net? but what is the structure? unless you go through an exam preparation or work abroad you will not come to know)

It is easy to choose the variant of your base country, as I have seen any tom dick and harry will do the same.

Are you planning to work in England or Wales? If so, take the ENG variant. If you plan to work in another country and it has its own variant, take that. If you plan to stay in India take the international variant. It’s that simple. Bear in mind the ENG exam has changed since 2010 and has got somewhat easier in that you don’t have to memorise cases anymore.

There was a similar topic the other day, where I posted some similar thoughts on this:

Thanks a lot it was really helpful. Now i’ve made up my mind to take the GLO variant. Will this be easier and which study material would be the best?

I usually study from BPP and most importantly make sure you get the revision kit.

You MUST get an up to date revision kit published by one of the recognised publishers

As for which variant … if there is any chance that you may wish to operate as an accountant / auditor in the UK at any time in the future, then you must have F4 English variant

If there is no chance that you have any UK ambitions, then Global is ok

There is no “easier” option – both English and Global are very comparable

OpenTuition lectures and course notes are a solid grounding but endless hours with a revision kit are vitally important … with a strong emphasis on “vitally”

Whenever you hit a problem, post on the F4 Ask ACCA Tutor page and I shall get back to you (I don’t always see the “Recent comments” page)

    OK?

    Hi Catriona,

I’d recommend you take the ENG variant. Although the Scottish and English legal systems have some important differences, there are more similarities than there are with the global variant. Although you don’t plan to live in England, many Scottish companies will trade in England too so I think having knowledge of the English system won’t hurt.
