this is general question: are expected to calculate variances, budgets (eg production), limiting factor rankings
OR is it enough to be able to talk about them?

Variances: unlikely to have to calculate them, but you might have to interpret/react to variances already calculated.
Budgets: unlikely to have to prepare one, but simple anyhow.
Limiting factor rankings: quite possible you might have to use these to decide on best strategy. See Ecocar (June 11) as reproduced here:
