Hello there sir,
I was doing 9.3 b) of the BPP Revision Kit Sept 2020 – Aug 2021, and the question instead of giving the options of Artifact, Espoused Values and Assumption, for the answers. The question rather gave the options of Artifact, Behavior and Attitudes. I dont think you have covered this within your Organization Culture chapter.
Please teach me here.
October 2, 2020 at 7:46 pm #587236P27 of our notes?
Some texts use slightly different terminologies. For example, Harvard Business Review uses artifacts, espoused values and assumptions. (https://hbr.org/2014/12/how-to-tell-if-your-company-has-a-creative-culture#:~:text=Schein%20divided%20an%20organization’s%20culture,%2C%20inside%20jokes%2C%20and%20mantras.)
I don’t think there is much difference between what’s meant by assumptions and attitudes.

Yes, I know you have mentioned Shein’s Artifacts, Espoused Values and Assumptions in Pg27.
I was rather focusing on the new terminologies I encountered within the Revision kit Question.
The answer for Patterns of greeting styles and business formalities would be Attitude, and you just equaled it to Assumptions. Sir, would you please explain why the answer is Attitude/Assumptions ? If you could further elaborate on the concept of Assumptions, using the example of greeting styles and business formalities. I was rather thinking the answer was Behavior. But it turned out to be Attitude/Assumptions.
Also, the remaining option – Behavior. Is that just a random answer option they put in not at all related to Shein’s 3 levels. Or does it equal to remaining slot – Espoused Values ?
October 7, 2020 at 10:09 am #587574I’ve looked into this more and conclude that BPP’s list of behaviour, artefacts and attitudes are a minority view at best.
If you Google ‘Schein culture model’ almost all references (including a scan of an original paper/article of Schein) refer to Artefacts, Espoused values and Assumptions. See https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA126613.pdf.
Artefacts include “the constructed environment of the organization, its architecture, technology, office layout, manner of dress, visible or audible behavior patterns, public documents such as charters, employee orientation materials, etc.,”
To my mind, therefore, artefacts include greeting styles and business formalities as well as office premises.
I think it’s a bad question (and a bad description of Schein’s model in the BPP text).

October 9, 2020 at 1:21 pm #587820The answer they provided was Attitudes instead of Artifacts for shaking hands etc, because they said Attitudes are patterns of collective behavior , and artifacts being concrete expressions (architecture, etc).
Bad question – as they chose the least popular version, but what about their answer ?
What should we rely on the ACCA exam if there is conflict with BPP content itself. Worrying matter.
October 9, 2020 at 4:58 pm #587843This is an isolated incident so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
