Purpose of sequentially numbered sales invoices

Hi sir, the purpose of having sequentially numbered sales invoices is actually to ensure that all invoices are processed right. If it's not then it will be difficult for the company to identify and trace missing invoices leading to a loss of revenue. Am i right sir ?
