Project sponsor And benefit

Is the project sponsor and the business case benefit owner the same person? A director could be the owner of a project to perform an upgrade to a production line. A business case is drawn up for this and brought through the approval stages of the company. Once approved, the business case benefit owner automatically falls to the sponsor? Is my understanding correct
