Hi Kim, I have read that you have worked as an examiner for the ACCA AA exams. I just wanted to know if you think that the opentuition notes and exam kit practice are sufficient to gain the knowledge to achieve a good mark in AA (possibly in the 70s or 80s). Or do you think its important to refer to the study text to get more detail and possibly score more in Section A?
August 24, 2022 at 7:40 am #664130Short answer … YES
As soon as a student has a sufficient grasp of the principles of each of the topic areas (which are covered by our notes), they should be doing as much question practice as possible – as I describe here https://opentuition.com/topic/exam-preparation-18 … and learning from the answers. If something is not clear from the answers they should check out their understanding by reference to a text (or browsing a suitable resource online) or asking me – that’s what I’m here for.
It is understanding and application to the given scenario that scores highly in AA – compare the approaches of these two first attempt candidates: https://opentuition.com/topic/my-approach-towards-clearing-aa-with-85 and https://opentuition.com/topic/how-i-pass-the-aa-for-50-marks-at-my-first-attempt – the latter’s rote learning approach is not the way to pass well.
August 24, 2022 at 4:57 pm #664158I believe you think the exam kit questions are not that resourceful and instead only the past papers on the ACCA website should be used?
August 24, 2022 at 5:09 pm #664160No that’s not true.
Revision kits are a valuable resource for additional revision question practice and mock exams but because they are paper-based they can’t provide the same “exam experience”. So students should be sure to use all the CBE resources that are available to them. A student who relies too heavily on a kit and doesn’t practice sufficiently in the CBE platform will be relatively disadvantaged. (I have had students “complain” after an exam that they couldn’t size the left/right hand sides of the screen – or get text to wrap in cells – or use formula – all things that they should have sorted before sitting the exam.)August 24, 2022 at 6:49 pm #664173Oh ok, thank you for the clarification. I hope I’m able to get a good grade in AA. I’ve only just started practicing Section B questions.
