Hi Goodnight Sir/ Miss,
My name is Alicia Johnson from Trinidad and Tobago. While reading the Kaplan textbook it stated that you should read good newspapers and professional journals.
Can you kindly state some examples of these?? Also how important is wider reading required for passing this exam??
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Much thanks
Alicia JohnsonFebruary 16, 2021 at 8:12 am #610597A bit of regular business-related reading is worthwhile (for all sorts of reasons), but I wouldn’t go overboard with it.
Exam papers are written by the examination team at least 1 year in advance of the exam date, so events close to the exam will not be reflected in any questions. All the information you need (eg about markets, economy etc) will be in the question.
Having said that, a general awareness of business matters can be of incidental use. You might have read about an unsuccessful takeover and integration that means you have become aware that not all takeovers run smoothly. There is a chance that knowledge might be relevant in a question. Similarly, the current Covid crisis has made everyone focus on the security of supplies produced overseas and that awareness might be relevant, say, in a question dealing with advice on off-shoring.
In the UK, most respectable Sunday newspapers have a substantial, easy-to-read, business section (eg Sunday Times, The Telegraph). Instead of buying a paper, browsing respectable sources on-line is fine and many do not have pay-walls. For example, the BBC site has a business section. Other sites such as the Financial Times allow access to a few articles per week free in return for registering. CNN also reports some business stories.
As I say, don’t spend too long. Go for the stories that look interesting and there is a better chance they will be useful to you.
