2,000 litres of a chemical were manufactured in a period. There is a process loss of 18% (11% because of poor quality material and 7% bacause of bad handling) of the material input in the manufacturing process.
How many litres of material (to the nearest litre)were input during the period?
A 1,640
B 2,247
C 2,360
D 2,439
Answer is D
2000/82%= 2439
If you have trouble getting the right proportions to use, base your input on 100. So:
Input – Lost = Output
100 – 18 = 82
The question gives you
Input – Lost = Output
? – ? = 2,000
So just use the model proportions (82:100) to move from output to input.
Input = 2000 x 100/82 = 2,439
You can check: If 2,439 is input, 18% is lost = 439, so 2,000 is good output.
