How to deal with negative numbers on a spreadsheet

I've read in a examiner report that it makes easy for a marker to Mark if the negative figures are shown negative on a spreadsheet but I get the problem of adding it instead while doing subtraction because you know two negatives result in a addition on a spreadsheet.

in that case, you could show both the figures as a negative amount in the spreadsheet then use the SUM formula which will add the 2 negative figures
