I was just having tough times completing the mock exams in timed conditions of 3 hours so just wanted to know that for a 20 mark requirement in which we apply pestel, swot or porter five forces how many relevant points do we have to justify in order to gain full marks. When i read examiner answer they are far too detailed and it will be achievement for me even if i write all the stuff in 5 hours but my points match them atleast 55-60%. I write concise points to save time but I am worried as some guys who secured high marks say examiner wants detailed explanation for each point which is virtually impossible under tough exam conditions.

How many marks are allocated per point like is it 1 mark per point, 1.5 mark per point or other marking scheme. In P3 we have different answers for every script and no single guided answer. Please help,

It really depends on how much you can write for each point, that is, how well- developed your point is. I have almost read all examiner articles from student accountant related to P3, and I concluded that this is how the papers are marked:

1). You might not get even half a mark by simply STATING a point! for example, if you are doing a SWOT analysis and you are making a point; “The new export promotion zone in Pakistan has created opportunities for ABC Company limited”. Now, you will hardly get half a mark for this statement.

2). The second level is that you EXPLAIN the point and earn yourself one complete mark. You develop the point by explaining why and how its an opportunity e.g. “The new export promotion zone (EPZ) in Pakistan has created opportunities for ABC Company limited (point stated), as ABC was seeking to export few of its products but was not aware of the regulations and logistics involved and now the ‘EPZ support staff’ is helping the company in setting up its export infrastructure and providing all the necessary knowledge (point explained” – one complete mark!

    3. At the third level, which will earn you two marks for each point, along with stating and explaining it, you also analyze it by discussing the pros and cons e.g. “The new export promotion zone (EPZ) in Pakistan has created opportunities for ABC Company limited (point stated), as ABC was seeking to export few of its products but was not aware of the regulations and logistics involved and now the ‘EPZ support staff’ is helping the company in setting up its export infrastructure and providing all the necessary knowledge (point explained). However, to acquire the exporting license and operate in the EPZ, ABC company must comply with the necessary requirements which are: strict compliance with the health and safety regulations, re- designing some of its processes at operational level and payment of export-license fee. Compliance with these requirements will require an outflow of financial resources and license fee, which has to be paid each year will increase ABC’s fixed cost and gearing level. (point analyzed)

The examiner is more interested in how well you can apply your knowledge to a particular scenario than knowledge per se. So, I would say, develop a point completely and try to score 2 marks per point, therefore, ‘analyzing’ 10 points in a 20 mark question.

    Hope this helped.
    Sohaib.
