    Hi-
im confused on the difference between Corresponding figures and Comparative Financial statements.
Could someone please explain the difference, and more importantly, give me an example of each?
The definition in IAS 1 is confusing to me. Corresponding figures are defined as prior period figures that are an integral part of the current year accounts-does that mean corresponding fingures are like opening stock or any opening balances??

Comparative F/S are those prior period amounts used for comparative purposes only-so is this just last year’s statements which are included alongside this years’ statements for comparison?

Please enlighten me as to whether im on the right track!
    thanks in advance 🙂

    Hi Blue,
Comparatives are complete set of financial statments of previous year which are APPENDED to the current year financial statments while corresponding figures are just figures.
So what’s the difference. Difference is that when the complete set is appended then they are called comparative financial statments while when the figures are written alongside the current year results then it is corresponding figures, like example of corresponding figures:
    2010 2009
    Sales 10,000 9,000
    Cost of Sales 5,000 4,000
Remember there will be no difference in the figures when you consider comparative financial statement or corresponding figures.

The main difference rises in the audit report,

Corresponding figures : No Reference in Audit report , as only current year f/s are audited. Although need to refer if prior year f/s was mms and the matter effect current year also.

Comparative F/s : Each year reference would be made as every year was subject to audit.

In normal language both the above are called comparatives. But we need to see whether comparative is a Comparative F/S or Corresponding Figure.

Its F8 topic better to revise previous book. : ) thnx

its easy if auditor reports also on previous years like 2008,2009nd 2010 then its comparative other wise like 4 comparation and for the sake of presentation the previous year figure presented in financial statements are corresponding figures .

I want to ask the following:
what mean “each year reference should be made for comparative f.s.”?
    especially, what is “reference” means?
does it mean that each year f.s. should be audited either by current auditor or preceding auditor?
And corresponding figures has no need to be audited previously?
if so, how can current auditor know its effect of misstatement on current f.s.?
