I’m about to start studying for F2. Most of the topic is familiar due to previous study. I hope to have 2 months to study at a lesisurely pace and sit the exam before the end of July. That will be my last of the F1-3 exams.
Does it make sense to do F5 straight after. What is the overlap/step up between the two? I’d aim for the September exams and need to book as soon as I’ve passed F2 – is this realistic and achievable or should I push it back to the December sitting and squeeze in F4 between the two? I work in accounts and have other responsibilities.
May 21, 2018 at 9:26 am #453081There’s quite a bit of overlap so it does make sense to do F5 afterwards, but it is a step up as well. Personally I did F1 > F3 > F2 > F4 > F5 but it would have made more sense to do F5 immediately after F2.
Doing F2 at the end of July only gives you around 6 weeks to study which is not a lot. I’d say it’s doable but only if you understood F2 well, got a good mark and got stuck into studying straightaway and committed plenty of evening and weekend time to studying.
F4 is probably easier to pass in a shorter space of time, and as you can take it any time perhaps you could take this towards the end of September and then take F5 in December giving you a bit longer.
May 22, 2018 at 4:35 am #453261Thanks for the reply. I could do F2 quicker so I have more time to study F5 instead, so F2 at the end of June and F5 in September.
I’ve done F1 in a month and it’s been a slog as as it’s a lot to read and remember as well as being very dull. I find F2 far more interesting and my job is moving towards this type of work and away from a bookkeeping role.
I suspect I’ve covered at least 50% of the topic from AAT L3 studies. I would just need to keep up the pace and continue to put my social life and DIY etc on the back burner. I got over 90% on F3 so should do well at this level.
Is this more feasible? Two months to study F5 but only one for F2? How steep is the step up? I was thinking F9 would follow F5 and that seems tougher still.
May 22, 2018 at 11:47 am #453341That sounds like a more sensible plan. If you’ve already studied some of the topics and you did well at F3 then it’s perfectly feasible.
It’s a reasonable step up but not massive. Pretty much every topic in F5 is rehashing things from F2 but at a more advanced level or more complexity added in. For example at F2 level you might be asked to calculate a materials variance but at F5 you might have to separate this into material price variance, material usage variance and material mix variance. And F2 has only multiple choice questions whereas F5 will have two 20-mark ‘constructed response’ questions which require written and/or spreadsheet answers.
F9 has a little overlap with F5 but really follows on from F2 as well. I wouldn’t say F9 is necessarily that much harder than F5. Really depends on your own strengths and weaknesses as to which you’ll find easier.
May 23, 2018 at 2:39 pm #453601Thanks Chris. I think that sounds sensible and it’s good to understand how the modules link together. So F2 leads on to both F5 and F9 with increased complexity and reduced breadth.
I just have to accept another intense month ahead. It should help with work and be more interesting than F1 at least. I’ll then see how I get on with F5 before booking the exam before the end of July deadline.
Right now back to memorising all the Names and their respectively theories for F1.
June 28, 2018 at 5:23 pm #460478Just to update I passed F2 today. Four weeks of study crammed in around work and home life so 78% wasn’t too bad. I had in the back of my mind that I’d be revisiting and mastering these techniques for F5 anyway.
I just need to decide if I can face jumping straight back into it for a September exam. Is nine or ten weeks enough time to be ready?
I realised online learning and videos works much better than text books, plus BPP go into far too much detail. I hope F5 is less wordy and more process focussed than F2 turnout out. Far more enjoyable than memorising advantages and disadvantages of X process etc, which is the type of question I’m sure I lost most marks.

Well done on passing F2! You got a decent mark which shows you grasped the topics well and you put in a good amount of effort.
Based on that I would say you could pass F5 in September, if you can face it!
September 17, 2018 at 8:56 pm #475020Hello, I decided to sneak in F4 before leaping into F5/PM and passed that today, 86% which was a nice surprise.
So I’m now about to start studying for PM aiming for December. Eleven weeks to go which feels more relaxed. However the 38% pass rate is quite intimidating. I need to be more organised and study a little most days, I can’t just cram it all in at weekends.
