How important it is to write explanation notes (as given in BPP and other revision kit answers) to support the calculations in exam?

Depends on requirement – if asked to calculate then just do that. In the exam kits many of the notes are not a part of the answer but an explanatory note to assist students’ understanding of the issues involved
