Hey guys, looking at the past paper 3.5 june’03, question 1(a) asks to evaluate the current position of the company. The examiner’s answer did not use the SWOT model.
So, my question is, can i use the SWOT model for this question instead? Putting the headings strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

Thanks in advance for feedback. 🙂

Yes. SWOT would be an acceptable approach. However, try to use some other models also. Eg you could mention PESTEL and perhaps 5 Forces when arriving at Os and Ts etc

SWOT is a way to present and to summarise the result of analysis. Therefore, SW must come from the internal analysis (i.e. resources based approach) and OT from external analysis (i.e. PESTEL and 5-force). It is not an analytical tool by itself.

If you skip the internal and external analysis and jump to use SWOT as an analytical tool, you will not be able to fully analyse and appropriately classify the issues. For example, if the case tells you that the company has 80% market share, how will you classify it under SWOT?
