Limiting access to payroll system by making it password protected .
I thought it is application control but answer is general control . How??February 9, 2021 at 8:53 am #609790It rather depends on where the password is encountered.
Most systems require a password for users to log-on to a network at all – even before they decide what processing they want to do. Often, after this all parts of a system can be accessed. In this case the password is a general control.
However, some systems, as an additional level of security require, other passwords to give access to specific areas of processing….like the salaries system, or to process journals, or to authorise payments from the bank. Then the password is more application-related.
However, despite the paragraph above, passwords are usually classed as general controls because they are so widespread and, other than granting access, have no other control function. Compare to a very specific control that might be found in a salaries application such as typing in an employee number and seeing the employee’s name to allow a check that the correct employee has been accessed.
