Is it important to know how Common Law was developed, i.e the history and the dates? I find it ridiculous that that would be tested in the exam yet I came across a question on it in the Kaplan kit.

It's a TINY part of the knowledge requirement! By typing out your post, you've already spent more time on it than is justified :-)
The sub-topic exists to put the subject of contract law into perspective and, I suppose, to give a time-line that you can better understand the idiosyncrasies of the law of contract
