    which process is the bottleneck?

    washing filling capping labelling
    time/dozen units (mins) 6 3 1.5 2
    machine hrs available 1200 700 250 450

the answer is capping because 10,000 dozen units are made which is the lowest compared to the capacities of washing(12000), filling(14000) and labelling(13500).

I do understand this answer sir, but the other thought i had in my mind was why is the answer not Washing? As it takes the maximum time per dozen(6mins) compared to any other processes, which means other processes ability to work on the units is being adversely affected by the bottleneck resource which is washing!

So why is the answer not washing?

isn’t this question controversial? As in time wise washing seems to be a bottleneck resource but units wise capping is.

    There is nothing controversial.

The product has to go through all four processes. Given that the most that can be processes in Capping is 10,000 that is all that can be produced in total. Capping is what limits the production and is therefore the bottleneck.

No I didn’t – I needed a break from answering all your (and everyone else’s) questions and then came back to finish off.

but why do we not look at the time taken per process? and why just units? because essentially if a process consumes more time than other processes will suffer from idle time and have to wait. thus the process that takes up more time becomes bottleneck resource like washing was here at 6minutes

By definition the bottleneck process is the process that is limiting the number of units that can be produced. There is automatically always idle time in the non-bottleneck processes.
