by the way, what did anyone write in section 3b?
the first responce was to set-up an it committee / non-executive director with the relevant experience / chief it officer.
the second one should be introduction of specific controls and general controls (such as authorisation by password, encryprion, safe place, etc).
third – don’t remember. 🙁
December 5, 2018 at 1:11 pm #487489I agree that for question 1, in order to capture the key success factors, a free-style analysis is more suitable as PESTEL, 5 FORCES are purely to evaluate the environment, and this not enough to demonstrate why HiLite is doing so well , for example the industry article said about the luxury hotel chains that went out of business ( same country same conditions)
I did use the Porter Diamond for inspiration as I believe the country itself has a competitive advantage in tourism that contributed to success of Hi-Lite ( favorable factors very good infrastructure, tax rebates, educational programs in hospitality which results in high percentage of leisure travelers )
I think with the models sometimes you are limiting your options to discuss a topic, and lose the focus from the actual requirement.December 5, 2018 at 2:21 pm #487518@lydia1208 said:

December 5, 2018 at 2:34 pm #487529Although I did not mention that I used as PESTEL or SAF, i explained the question as inline with the content of PESTEL and SAF.
Can i still get mark from my answers or would I have to explain as Political, Economical, Social, etc..

definitely. there is no requirement to use the model (provided your explanations suffice).

1a i used the porters diamond
1b was okay i used SAF model to asses the decisin to buy or not2a used some points to defend Hilite’s decesion
2b Intergrated report MMMH Disaster i compltely forgot3a Was alittle bit hard but managed to get a few points on how Hilite’s can respond to the rent a room service
3b i wasnt sure about the last risk but manged to provide notes to the first two riskskeeping my fingers crossed
December 5, 2018 at 5:30 pm #487668well that’s me done – i didn’t use Pestel or porter’s diamond – i just used the information from the case stud extracts.
I waffled through integrated reporting, as i couldn’t remember integrated reporting at all.
So this is weird, i found the exam paper hard but OK all at the same time. So i guess from all the above, i will be re-sitting, as i used no theory just common sense.
LOL
December 5, 2018 at 6:28 pm #487679You don’t need to use a model unless it’s specifically stated in the question. I didn’t use a model for 1 a) or b) but realize on reflection that the points I made were in line with PESTLE, Porters Diamond and SAF. Unless the question tells you to use a model I prefer not to as tend to come up with more ideas by just using the info in the case and common sense.

Wouldnt worry and overthink it.

December 7, 2018 at 8:40 am #4881841a. Used pestel
1b. SAF
2a. Formal points related
2b. Benefits of individual integrated capitals
3a. Pointwise alternative options to tackle
3b. Put points in slide format with solutionsDecember 7, 2018 at 9:08 am #488187After 3hours non-stop writing my fingers just gave up.
Even though my brain was working, the fingers were refused to write.I really hope there will be any way we can take the exam by computer or something that physically not painful in the future.
December 7, 2018 at 3:25 pm #488253didnt use any model at all.
Was too stressed to remember any
December 7, 2018 at 5:17 pm #488276When will be the answers released?

Thought exam was OK, and pretty fair, like others I don’t think I did a well as I could with the knowledge I had of this area. Maybe an opportunity missed.December 9, 2018 at 7:16 am #488531@robertoh said:
2a ah yes, press release. Thought was ok just not sure if enough for 10 marks but nice and easy questionWe both had same approach at attempting these questions…
December 9, 2018 at 7:25 am #488532Thought the exam was better than expectations. 1a I used Diamond adding some elements of PESTLE as I saw fit. 1b. I used SAF which made it easy to analyse financial (IRR, payback and others) and non financial decision as seen in the exhibits. The question did not ask for any model so its more of a freestyle and i also didnt dwell much on trying to calculate anything 2a. Tested communications skills and you just needed to be formal and use the right tone. 2b IR was pretty easy showed how the 6 capitals can be used to communicate and add value. 3a tested scepticism skills on the boards view of disruptive tech. I found it a bit tougher than the rest mainly because I was pressed for time….I just scribbled some points. 3b was very OK. The slides were to state the risk, consequences and controls then give notes. Overall the exam was good
December 14, 2018 at 1:36 am #491967Hi all. I have to record the memory here, not sure whether thinking are right…
1a
Success is a combination of external opportunities and internal strength
External 5 points(developed country provided a stable operational economy, attract visitors, government build infrastructure, university provided talent base, policy encourage people to do jobs of travel)
Internal 3-4 points maybe. Forget how many I wrote
1b
SAF
2a
Draft press release: Hi-Lite will insist a persistent corporate citizenship at Deeland as well as Veeland. How minimized impact on environment in Deeland. How maximized benefits on social in Deeland. Will relocate managers to do change. Veeland pollution remained large space to change by best practice and experience
2b
I wrote 4 points
– Decision making: IR covers a broad range of information, including external environment. can make stakeholders know why we do this decision
– Harmonized performance review: 6 capitals, can make sales, operation, finance review change management after investment…
– Reputation(forget how)
– Avoid conflicts of stakeholder claims, e.g. Veeland’s local communities may support Hi-Lite because we are environmental sustainable
3a
Skepticism the operational director
– New entrants
– Pricing strategy
– Cost leadership position is threatened
– Expontential penetration
– Customer needs
Simply give bullet points with simple explanation of application
– Partner and become a supplier of rent a room
– Embed booking system into rent a room
– Advertisement on rent a room
3b
Give 3 outcomes of each risk in each slide
Actions include FD provided, but use different expression.
Only give notes on simple description…December 23, 2018 at 11:46 am #492534yes
