Applied Skills session exams test technical knowledge and your ability to apply it under time pressure. Passing requires more than finishing the lectures: you must practise complete requirements in the CBE workspace and learn how marks are awarded.
Use the current exam documents
Start with the syllabus and study guide for your exact exam and variant. Check the examinable documents, specimen exam and any examiner or examining-team guidance. Tax and law content changes regularly, while accounting and auditing syllabuses can change when standards or examinable documents are updated.
Prepare in three stages
- Tuition: work through the OpenTuition notes and lectures in a planned sequence. Complete short questions after each topic.
- Question practice: move from topic questions to mixed objective-test cases and constructed-response requirements.
- Revision: complete timed practice exams, mark them honestly and revisit the weakest areas identified by your debrief.
Use ACCA’s Practice Platform early. The spreadsheet and word-processing areas are part of the assessment environment; they should not be new to you on exam day.
Allocate time by marks
A three-hour, 100-mark exam gives an average of 1.8 minutes per mark. Use that as a control total rather than spending too long perfecting one answer. When the planned time for a requirement ends, leave space if appropriate and move on.
Objective questions can consume time through repeated checking. Make a reasoned selection, flag genuine uncertainties and protect sufficient time for constructed-response sections, where method, explanation and application can earn marks.
Answer the requirement actually set
- Break a requirement into its verbs and separate parts before writing.
- Use headings that mirror the requirement so the marker can follow your answer.
- Apply points to the scenario. Generic knowledge earns fewer marks when the requirement asks for analysis, explanation or advice.
- Show workings clearly in computational questions. A sensible method can earn credit even when the final figure is wrong.
- Write concise sentences. More words do not compensate for missing the requirement.
Practise, mark and debrief
Attempt at least two full practice exams under realistic conditions. Mark against the published solution and marking guide, but do not expect your wording to match the model answer. Ask instead: Did I address every requirement? Did I use the scenario? Were my workings clear? Did I finish within time?
Recent practice exams are generally safer for technical revision because they are updated for current formats. Use older past exams cautiously: legislation, standards, syllabuses and exam structure may have changed.
On exam day
Complete the system checks and administrative requirements in advance. During the exam, keep the timer visible, save or move between requirements carefully, and leave a short final review for incomplete answers. If one question feels difficult, remember that it is difficult for many candidates; keep collecting the marks available elsewhere.
