ACCA Exam Technique: On-demand CBEs

Current exam technique for ACCA BT, MA, FA and English or Global LW on-demand computer-based exams.

VIVA Subject Guide

For ACCA BT, MA, FA and the English or Global variants of LW. Reviewed for 2026–27.

On-demand computer-based exams can be booked throughout the year through an authorised centre or, where available, ACCA’s approved remote arrangements. They reward broad syllabus coverage, accurate reading and disciplined time management.

Know the format before you study

These are two-hour exams assessed with objective questions and multi-task questions. The exact mix is set out in each exam’s current syllabus and study guide. Question types may include multiple choice, multiple response, matching and number entry.

Do not rely on recognition alone. A distractor is often based on a common error, so you must calculate or reason to the answer before selecting it. There is no negative marking, which means every question should have an answer before time expires.

A reliable preparation method

  1. Learn one syllabus area. Use the OpenTuition lecture with the matching notes, then summarise the rule or method in your own words.
  2. Answer questions immediately. Short, frequent sets reveal misunderstandings much earlier than end-of-course revision.
  3. Keep an error log. Record whether each mistake came from knowledge, interpretation, calculation or rushing.
  4. Mix topics. The live exam moves across the syllabus; your later practice must do the same.
  5. Practise the interface. Use the current specimen exam and ACCA resources so navigation and question types are familiar.

Technique in the exam

  • Read the requirement before studying a long scenario or data set.
  • Notice words such as not, except, maximum and minimum.
  • For multiple-response questions, check how many selections are required; partial selections normally do not earn partial credit.
  • For number entry, follow the requested units and rounding. Do not add commas or symbols unless the interface asks for them.
  • If a question is blocking you, choose your best answer, flag it and move on. Return only after completing the rest of the exam.
  • Use the progress screen to find incomplete or flagged questions before submitting.

The final week

Complete full, timed practice rather than repeatedly rereading notes. Review every wrong answer and every correct answer that involved guessing. Revisit only the weak syllabus areas identified by that debrief.

On exam day, arrive or log in early, follow the centre or remote-exam rules, and use the opening instructions to settle into the interface. Your aim is a controlled attempt across the whole paper—not perfection on the first difficult question.
