@avian will – exactly! What happened to the analyst who was being cited? You need to insert his name and then say as reported by D.. in How B British supermarkets etc. etc.
Now PLEASE submit as you are becoming too obsessive about all of this!!! 🙁 (and it really is not necessary). So CB,C!!! 😀
November 13, 2014 at 8:00 pm #209829Hahaha! You made me laugh @Trephena thanks!
I’m not a person who keeps things last minute and I did start RAP long ago. But a family emergency interrupted the whole prep process so now I’m trying to pull it together …with my wacky nervous disposition! But I’ll be done soon (gulp)… and chill 😀
Anyhoo so reference in the list is:
Dejevsky, M., 2014. Bob as reported by Dejevsky, M. in How British Supermarkets Are Being Eaten Alive. Newsweek. [online] Available at: <https://www.newsweek.com/2014/08/01/how-british-supermarkets-are-being-eaten-alive-260651.html> [Accessed 22 Sep. 2014].
where Bob is the analyst… yes?

Hello,
I want to reference a interview I did for Topic 6. This interview in the Appendices. In part 3 of RAP while referring to this interview what should I write?
While referring to this interview I wrote ( Appendices 1). Will this be acceptable?
Regards

@trephena
would u mind to make comments on it:
(1)BPP LEARNING MEDIA- written on their main cover page. so when I am citing and making list do I have to write exactly the way they wrote. in this case they wrote in all capital letters.
(2) INVESTOPEDIA and BBC – written on website. so when I am citing and making list do I have to write exactly the way they wrote. in this case they wrote in all capital letters.
(3) when I am using the newspaper from online, do I have to write the way the article headline wrote on website. for example:How British Supermarkets Are Being Eaten Alive- they wrote all words start with capital letter. do I have to wrote the way they wrote
or
How british supermarkets are being eaten alive- will be fine.
plz help me mate as u always do
thank uNovember 15, 2014 at 11:37 am #210170Hello,
Hope you can help. When we have to put the URL in the references is just the name of the website with the http:\ or do we have to put the exact link, i.e. the long link to find exactly what we are referencing it?
And if I douwnloaded a pdf from a website do I put the long list to find the pdf or not?
Many thanks in advance
AmarainPS: Threphena many thanks for your answer yesterday!
November 15, 2014 at 5:39 pm #210273@ts1110 – it is what is normal for these organisations – I would write BPP Learning Media, Investopedia and BBC.
With Titles it is often the convention to use a capital letter for main words – but don’t worry about it – it is not a hanging offence if you use small letters( although British is a proper noun and that should have capital to be strictly correct)
@Amarain – better to put links in the ref list as the marker may wish to download the document and check it exists (or read it!!!). You do not however use URLs /links/ addresses in the text e.g. you would put (opentuition.com, 2014) if you were citing our site in the text 🙂November 16, 2014 at 1:51 am #210306AnonymousInactive- Topics: 0

One more question I made graph or chats and named it figure 1 , 2 etc

December 23, 2014 at 7:55 am #221485Hello.
Can I use references from un official sources like wikipedia?
December 23, 2014 at 10:58 am #221519@majidsultankhattak – yes if you want to annoy the marker!! use wikipedia to find better reliable sources
March 5, 2015 at 2:20 am #231325I have four sentences paraphrased from Annual Report, as following structure:
Sentence 1…..
Sentence 2…..
Sentence 3…..
Sentence 4 …..Where should the in-text citation be put?
1) At the end of the paragraph, after the period? e.g. ABC Co. has market capital of $1 billion. (ABC Co., 2014)
2) At the end of the paragraph, before the period? e.g. ABC Co. has market capital of $1 billion (ABC Co., 2014).
3) At the end of each sentence? That would be awkward.Thanks.
March 5, 2015 at 2:35 am #231327PS. What tense should I use to paraphrase content from Annual Report and Online newspapers? As it has already happened, should I use past tense?
e.g. The company has/had net operating revenues of $1 billion as of 31 December, 2013.
Thanks.
March 5, 2015 at 7:53 pm #231412@moioi – the in-text citation is exactly what it says on the tin – in the text if refers to. You should only put a citation at the end of a paragraph if either the whole paragraph is being cited or it refers to the last sentence of the paragraph. This may seem odd to students but this is the norm in the world of academia and the correct (and only) way to do referencing properly.
Sorry I cannot see any difference in your (1) and (2) above (maybe I am missing something?) but as examples of what is correct I suggest that you consult my article on Evaluation and Analysis on the OT OBU Homepage: http://www.opentuition.com/obu
I do a sample initial evaluation of Laura Ashley and it demonstrates how the reference can (and should) sometimes come in the middle of the sentence.
As for tense it often is a case of how it reads – probably past tense is best most of the time.

March 6, 2015 at 1:17 pm #231490The difference between (1) and (2) mentioned above is the punctuation position:
(1) . (ABC Co., 2014)
(2) (ABC Co., 2014).Should the rounded bracket appear before or after the period punctuation?
March 6, 2015 at 1:20 pm #231491P.S. Can I quote directly from a dictionary the definition of primary data, for example?
Or should I have to find a definition from academic books?
Thanks.
March 6, 2015 at 3:54 pm #231529@moioi – if I can’t see a difference, I doubt a marker would either so chill 🙂
It would depend where the reference is appearing in the sentence anyway – if in the middle (and some do) then there is sometimes no punctuation required at all, so only if the end of the bracket coincides with the end of the sentence and then the normal rules of punctuation apply (after a bracket).Yes you may quote from a dictionary. References are vital to distinguish your work and ideas from those of others and are very important in the Findings section where you should be demonstrating research from a broad range of source (not just the annual reports for T8). Graphs, any tables and charts need to show the sources and the application of models need referencing too to provide validity to the comments.
March 8, 2015 at 2:23 am #231652I want very much to include as many sources as possible.
But the place where I live now does not have a library that has English academic books.
And many reputable electronic newspapers and magazines need subscriptions to gain access.
I need to know what else could I search for reliable information?
P.S. Even if I do subscribe to an online newspaper, such as The Economist, is the URL link I provide going to be visible to non-subscribers, such as RAP markers? If not, is it going to affect my results?
P.P.S. Most of the books I reference in my report are e-books in .pdf format. Do I have to provide a URL link? What if I don’t have a link or I forgot where I got it after such a long time?
March 8, 2015 at 8:52 am #231661To pass Information Gathering you have to show that you have used a range of sources -that means that whatever topic you choose it must not be solely dependent on company sources. Whether they are online ebooks, journals or newspaper articles is immaterial as long as the source is reliable and relevant and shows balance (i.e. some of it is written by non-company officials)
OBU like most universities will have block subscriptions to most journal publishers and distributers (Wiley, Jstor etc) – this is normal. Besides there are other means that markers can check the validity of sources – so that should not be a concern of yours. You must provide the author, date, the full title of the article and either journal volume and issue number or the link to the pdf article you found.
The other thing is to ensure that you use up to date information – as I have indicated elsewhere on the forums, if the information is old then it can be failed. Apparently markers sometimes do a quick search themselves to see what sorts of info is available so will question why a student is extensively using data that is 3 or 4 years old for e.g. T18 when fresher more relevant material is easily available.
Markers check some of the references too so you need to ensure that the details in the list mean that they can find them easily. Referencing is a common reason for failure so in this respect I have actually seen feedback that has said things along the lines of: “Your referencing is not systematic and I could not find some of the items in your list”…”the reader should be able to locate the sources in your list in a matter of moments and from the details trace the actual document” … “there are many purposes of referencing and one of them is that reader should be able to consult the article you have cited and read it for themselves or at least verify that it exists. I was not able to do this for some of your work”….”Your list contained far, far too many items listed as Anon, n.d. this is unacceptable in academic work”… “ALL your references in the text should match those in your list – your does not”.
So the fact that “What if I don’t have a link or I forgot where I got it after such a long time?” will not wash with a marker – the Information Pack states full referencing is required so as far as they are concerned the student should know the requirements… and if they do not comply with the requirement then they are highly likely to be failed on Referencing. (Section 6 is one of the most frequently failed sections – fact!). If you use an ebook or ejournal etc you must include the URL in your reference list (not in the body of the report). It is therefore important that you ensure that you keep all details of material used as it is unacceptable to include a reference without sufficient details for the reader to find it as it is is a protocol of all academic work and the markers expect this
March 8, 2015 at 2:23 pm #2317161) If I am using annual reports for companies between 2011 and 2013, then should I use the latest news for the years 2014 and 2015? Or should I use the more relevant information between 2011 and 2013?
2) I’ve written out all the reference details for a printed book. Since the printed books and electronic books share all the same information, can I just provide the relevant details for corresponding printed books without a URL link?
March 9, 2015 at 8:54 am #231769P.S. I subscribed to The Economist yesterday, but noticed that there are no authors indicated for its articles due to its anonymity policy. Then how can I cite its authors?
P.P.S. When citing BPP textbooks, there are 9 books published in the same year. I know I should write, for example, 2013a or 2013b in the in-text citation, but should I also do so in the reference list?
March 9, 2015 at 3:31 pm #231795@moioi –
1. You base your evaluation and analysis on the 3 years up to the latest set of financial statements in accordance with the OBU rules set out on p.39 of the latest Information Pack. If something particularly significant happened since that date then you just include it as appropriate ‘(significant’ might mean profits warning, investigation by a regulating body or criminal proceedings e.g. something that would have hit the headlines in the business news)2. Yes you can provide just the printed book details but I personally usually provide both
3. With newspapers and journals then you give the author if known, otherwise the ref in the text is as you say Economist 2013a, Economist 2013b etc if you have more than one article to reference for this journal from the same year. Then you must make 2 entries in the list with the full details of the articles e.g. full name of article, exact date they appeared and page if possible. However if you refer to the same article more than once then you just repeat say Economist 2013a, each time you refer to it and then you should only have one entry for it in the list
4. As with (3) and give the title of the BBP book(s) you use and date of publication
March 13, 2015 at 12:59 am #232195Thanks for helping me clarify things on my report.
I don’t know if there are any trade journals available for ACCA students to read.
Up to now, I’ve just completed Part I and II and used only technical journals.
I think trade journals will come in handy when doing Part III.
March 14, 2015 at 1:14 pm #232365just a heads up, OBU have now made available the citation plugin for EndNote x7
March 21, 2015 at 6:33 pm #233588Hello I have been reading the other forums on open tuition for OBU,and now I am confused because so far I have completed section 1&2 of my RAP,but this is based on information collected from the intent, I just copy and paste and then reference for example (www.yourasda.com, 2011) but I don’t put any quotation marks am I suppose to also use quotation marks for the information I have copied from the Internet? Also is it ok to rephrase the words of someone else provided that you reference the website? ..This referencing has really got E confused..I was planning on analysing and evaluating in section 3 that’s why most of the information in section one and two has been taken from the Internet. .but I don’t want to fail my RAP.. Please help me… 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁
