Referencing – Rules, Queries, Harvard etc.

@Nick123 – The in text citation for the FSs should be (Starbucks Annual Report, 2013) or ( Starbucks, 2013) – You should never have a webpage link itself in the text. URLs and actual webpages go in the list. You are supposed to show the latest date of access but an approximate one will do if you are constantly using a source. The reason is to confirm the webpage still exists – if a marker cannot access the site because the webpage is no longer there they will wonder how you managed to….(it is very unlikely the annual reports would be taken down so no probs there with using a date that is approximate.

Remember the info in the ref list is supposed to be sufficiently complete and accurate enough so that the reader can either access the source or verify its existence. Some markers are very ‘hot’ on this and will pick out some randomly – I suspect if they cannot find them they will question whether the student (a) has actually found and used the source or (b) whether the student has demonstrated adequate referencing skills

@Nick123 – I think initially webpage addresses were acceptable (when the internet sources weren’t the norm) but over time it has now become viewed as lazy referencing and no longer considered permissible (a student would probably get away with using the odd one but not if the whole report contain URLs)

@avian will – you are fine with (energynews.com, 2013) but of course your second version is equally acceptable

@aneeq7 – that’s fine and correct – when I talk about same designation I am referring to instances where people use completely different identifiers so it is impossible for the reader to go to the ref list and find them without searching through the whole list. With yours the reader/ marker would find John in about 2 seconds (provided the list is in alphabetical order) so they will be happy 🙂

Trephena, can you please prepare the references for the followings to be included in list of reference. I have done all the reference work but I have no clue how to refer these.

@naveedullahwardak – it’s your choice whether you follow my advice or not but as I have explained repeatedly the RAP is not marked on referencing the same hard way as a higher degree or even another BSc. I have set out the rules above in posts to isookvi (page 2) Nick123 and avian will and those are what I applied to my own Masters degree for which I got a distinction (including the dissertation).

[Incidentally I have previously discussed this with an OBU Moderator who confirmed the position I set out in my posts above and confirmed this more recently with the Chief Moderator. Markers should be applying the basic principles as set out in my response to isookvi e.g. applying a method that is systematic, identifies exactly what is being referenced and allows references to be located on the list quickly and verify their authenticity. So please stop fretting about a full stop or comma here or there -IT DOES NOT, REPEAT NOT, MATTER!!]

hi @trephena what if i don’t mention like “CEO XYZ” if taken from CEO’s report or chairman report specifically instead I just mention like “XYZ Annual Report 2012”?

i emailed acca brookes connect officer asking which style under harvard is acceptable.

he replied all harvard styles are acceptable but it is recommended to use Harvard > Brookes style.

so guys to make life easier, open word>click on reference tab> style and select Harvard – Angilia 2008 (Its nearly the same as brookes very minor difference)

whenever you want to insert citation, in the reference tab click insert citation and check show all bibliography fields. fill out the ones with ” * ” next to them.

Once done at the end click bibliography in the references tab to enter them in alphabetical order as advised by the BSc information pack.

If you dont have Harvard – Angilia 2008 style, google it. You will find it

if my website start with http , like the open tuition pages do I have to create the www bit and insert it or I type it as it is, starting with http?

@avian will – in the text put the name of the reporter, in the list start with the same designation and then expand it to include the actual person who said it cited by reporter name in…..and then put name & date of publication
