for referencing if the same author or title have multiple publications in the same year, for example Jason Mike is an editor in ABC news and have 3 news report , then should it be referenced as
Mike, J.(2016a)
Mike, J.(2016b)
Mike, J.(2016c)REPLY from Trephena – yes that is the correct way
April 22, 2017 at 3:40 pm #383087Just a question about the submitting of the RAP.
Do they need to submit a hard-copy as well and send to university or only submitting online through Oxford Brookes University website?
Thank you.
REPLY from Trephena – all submission work is online only (no hard copies). A separate file for the reference list is required (do not submit this list in the report itself as it messes up the word count and then the marker has to remove it so will not thank you for making them do the extra work!)
April 22, 2017 at 6:18 pm #383115i got some information from university library(online). how do i reference it. there is no author’s name and title is distinguish between primary and secondary sources. Should i use university name or title.
if there is no year of publishing, should i use the year of last access or n.d…. (my mentor told me to use year of access)
Also i got some information from research reservoir(namely shodhganga) that includes research thesis of Ph.D students. the problem is the name of the researcher is not available in that case can i use Shodhganga as the author’s name
April 23, 2017 at 1:24 am #383136Hi Sana,
Your questions should be posted in the relevant threads in the forums.
1) I don’t understand what you mean by you “do not have access to Harvard Referencing Tool”. Some students use the referencing function in MS Word, and if you are using MS Word 2007, you can google to see how that can be added to your program. In any case, you should be able to generate your citations and references manually.
2) You should generally use the restated figures and examine the reasons why the figures were restated.
April 23, 2017 at 1:20 pm #383191With regard to (1) please see my article the Open Tuition Ultimate Guide to Referencing your RAP on our homepage as this should cover just about every referencing query – find this on http://www.opentuition.com/obu
Thanks TLL for your answer to (2) – not my strongest point!
(I am now closing this thread as I always request that existing forums are used before starting a new thread -thanks)
April 25, 2017 at 9:25 am #383614Generally if this is a blog then do not make extensive use of such material as it is not considered a reputable source. ( Most reputable sources have a proper author’s name) However it is acceptable for generic sections such as in the context you are proposing to use it. n.d. is used to indicate no date. -do not insert a year if there is not one but state the date you accessed it alongside the link in your list.
You really should have the name of the researcher for the PhD theses. You may get away with using shodhganga however provided you give the exact link to the piece of work you are citing. Relying on anonymous sources (i.e. no researchers’ names) and just a link to a website homepage is not acceptable. You might find if you feed in some of the key points it may appear on Google Scholar and give you the researcher / author of the PhD name
April 25, 2017 at 9:40 am #383616Thanks for suggesting google scholar. i got the author’s name. I dont know if OBU will accept it since it is a pdf document and no where in that document mentions the name of the author.
April 25, 2017 at 1:05 pm #383636This doubt might seem a bit odd….
When referencing the annual reports should we use year of publishing or the year the financial statements are prepared. there are some industry facts from ICAO and IATA, they dont have the year of publishing and show the year wise figures and these figures are available till 2015. Can i use 2016 as the year of publishing or stick to n.d.
April 25, 2017 at 2:05 pm #383644Normally for the annual reports stick to the year they refer to otherwise you can become horribly confused when you are dealing with 3 years – so YE 2016 is still 2016 even if published in early 2017. Technically if there is no year of publishing you should go with n.d.
April 25, 2017 at 9:58 pm #383814Hi Trephena, thank you for your answers before, that helped me a lot!
For appendices purposes, the name of the file will be – (Appendix A – FS Extracts 2014-2016 Company A) ?
Also, do i need to write the FS of my main company by myself and put it on different appendix or only copies of the extracts of both companies will be good enough?
Thanks again!

The reference list must be uploaded as a totally separate file. It should NOT be included as Part 4 otherwise it messes up the word count and the markers will not thank you for that. When submitting you will have the opportunity to upload the appendices as separate files and also separate files for Excel and PoweRPoint too.
Thanks Trephena.
So, I do not mention anything in the RAP for the reference list and appendices or do I need to write at the end of the RAP ”Reference list and Appendices are attached on separate files”?
April 26, 2017 at 5:44 am #383843I have heard that Spreadsheet you make can be used for referencing.
If yes what does the in-text citation and the full referencing look like ?
May 1, 2017 at 7:25 am #384406Hi,
I am not sure what is the correct way to reference the annual reports of Emirates, since author is not clearly mentioned.
Can someone please help with an example of in-text citation and bibliography from the link below:
https://www.emirates.com/in/english/about/annual-reports.aspx ==> How to reference the annual report of 2015/16
EDIT: I tried out the following. Any comments if this is correct / acceptable?
(Emirates, 2016)
Emirates (2016). Emirates Annual Report 2015-16. [Online]
Available at: https://content.emirates.com/downloads/ek/pdfs/report/annual_report_2016.pdf
(Accessed 10 Mar 2017).Thanks and Regards
May 3, 2017 at 10:58 am #384685@pete28 no need. Your marker will expect it to be loaded separately and curse you if you have also included it in the report file as it messes up the word count- so be sure after saving it to a separate file you go back into the report and remove the reference list.
May 3, 2017 at 11:02 am #384686@mango1991 – the spreadsheet as an appendix can be used to reference graphs etc. You need to read the Open Tuition Ultimate Guide to referencing your RAP to understand all about referencing and all of this is explained in it (if you look at all parts) so see this guide on our homepage http://www.opentuition.com/obu
May 3, 2017 at 11:05 am #384687@gbtech – that looks fine as long as you are referencing the actual financial statements. If you are referring to the CEO and/or directors’ reports and verbal statements, then you need to include page numbers in the text reference or state it is the CEO report etc.
May 4, 2017 at 7:36 pm #384875Dear Trephena, thank you very much for your help and support! I did read 3 reference articles but still have several unclear moments. I would be very grateful if you could advise.
Could you please advise how reference should look like for:
1. List of points:
for example SWOT and PESTEL – in case there are several points relating to one source, should i put the reference at the end of all strengths or at each line, for example:
-strength 1
– strength 2
– strength 3 (name, 2015)In case i need to reference each line i am afraid i won’t fit into the work count of the project..
2. How often to reference in case big pieces of info are based on the source?
when i was writing about the industry i was using 2 sources. there are several paragraphs about the industry, each paragraph consists of several sentences. First 2 paragraphs relate to one source, 3rd paragraph relates to another. Can i put the reference at the end of second paragraph (for 1st source) and then at the end or 3rd (for the 2nd source)?
3. Libraries with closed access
i was using closed library (access granted from work), should i anyway provide a full link and not just a library adress?4. GOOGLE books as a library
as well i was using google.books.com to find some info i need. does it mean, that i whould need to provide the link to the book and reflecting just google.books.com is not enough?5. What is the year of annual report?
According to the rules date of publishing shoudl be reflected. Obviously annual reports are published next year. should i write write the year of the report or the year of publishing? For example: (Company XX, 2017)?6. Referencing calculations from excel workings within the RAP
As i understood, if i state within the 3rd part that profits went down 3% and etc, i should reference the souce. If the source are my excel workings with several Tabs, then can I reference (Appendix 3A) and in reference list write Appendix 3A Tab Horizontal analysis. Should i write a year as well?Thank you very much!
May 4, 2017 at 9:13 pm #384880Hi Trephena,
I got two questions for the appendices section when i will upload the FS of my main company and comparator. I would very please if you answer me, thanks!
In Ryanair’s 2016 annual report, in the consolidated financial statements there is the income statement and balance sheet and included as well the years 2015 and 2014.
Only this two pages i need? or do I need to upload and the pages on the annual reports of 2015, and 2014. But on 2015 there is the 3 year period before.
I hope you understand what i mean.My second question, how to name my files when uploading to the OBU? e.g. Appendix A – Ryanair’s FS 2014-2016 ?
Thanks again!
May 5, 2017 at 4:57 pm #384970Hi @trephena
Your advices on improving the RAP have been very useful and i am thankful for your instructions.
When referencing newspaper article from website, i came across a query posted in this thread for which you replied to reference as; BBC (2012). Leveson Inquiry: Coulson held News Corp shares while PM’s aide, BBC News website retrieved 12 May 2012 from https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18002228. But i have used the editor’s name in place of say BBC. Should I change it or should i proceed with it.
Also my mentor told me use year of access in case year of publishing is unavailable and the OBU infopack says differently. Will I be penalised for this?
And finally, i have taken some information from Investopedia like net debt and fixed asset turnover ratio.
These are referenced as:-
Investopedia (n.d.). Fixed-Asset Turnover Ratio. [Online] Available:https://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/fixed-asset-turnover.asp. Last Accessed Date:16th February 2017.
Investopedia (n.d.). Net Debt. [Online] Available:https://www.investopedia.com/terms/n/netdebt.asp. Last Accessed Date:17th April 2017.and cited as:-
Investopedia (n.d.)
Investopedia (n.d.)Is this correct way way of referencing and citing. The issue here is there is no year of publishing and if there had been i could have cited it along with alphabets. This citation looks like it is taken from same webpage when it is not.
May 5, 2017 at 11:31 pm #385007@amal3008 – your referencing seems to be spot on. And yes you are right about the BBC reference – technically it should be the editor’s name but for RAP purposes but my simpler version is acceptable.
Don’t add a date if there isn’t one so your mentor is wrong on this one.
If you look at the Golden Rules every source needs a unique reference so you should add (a), (b) etc. if necessary to achieve this.
May 6, 2017 at 1:16 am #3850091. Every point has to be referenced so you will need to edit to stay with 50 words or so of the word count.
2. Each paragraph would need a reference even if the source is the same for 1 and 2
3. & 4 The idea of referencing is that the reader should be able to find the document so the name of the library and google books. com is inadequate- names and titles of documents should be used for hard copy books, date of publication, place and publisher.
5. Annual report – use the year of the accounts otherwise you are going to end up horribly confused – so in other words the last day of the company’s financial year is the year of the report e.g. 31 Dec 2016 is Annual Report 2016 even if published in June 2017.
6. You can reference to the appendix and state the source on the worksheet. Just label the tabs
May 6, 2017 at 1:24 am #385011@steven – sorry I don’t really understand what you mean but you only have to load the financial statements and not the whole report.
It does not really matter what name you give the appendices files. The Presentation, SLS and Report are loaded first and it will have a ‘space’ for these so you browse and upload accordingly and then upload the other files
May 6, 2017 at 9:11 am #385055Hi Trephena
I have a few queries if you could please help me with them:
1. How do I cater to the words in graphs, do the graph legends count in word count too or just the titles of the charts? Also in our declared word count, should we include words in graphs or declare it without graphs?
2. I have used some books in my research project which I have with me as soft copies. But I am not able to find appropriate online source to them and my mentor is insistent that I should find them online and refer them accordingly to make the reviewers’ lives easier. Is it really that necessary? For example, I have also referred BPP P3 book that I have in hard copy, so I believe it does not matter really. Please advise.
3. My mentor told me using annual report in part 3 of the project is not allowed at all. Although I didn’t find any such guidance in the information pack, he is still insistent I remove annual report references. I went through somebody’s result report and it said “your report has a clear lack of referencing to company documents such as annual reports and accounts”.
Also I have not placed excessive reliance on annual report, just referred it like 9-10 times in the entire report. Is this ok?4. In my excel appendix, I have made single worksheet for P&L of both companies, my research company as well as competitor. Is this ok? Or should I separate them?
5. Do you think the reviewers check ratios calculations to some sort of numbers they have made up on their own or found from some other source?

Hi TrephenaI have a few queries if you could please help me with them:
6. Wherever possible, I have referred sources such as Bloomberg, Reuters, Yahoo Finance, CNBC, Flight Global with the authors’ names
e.g., in-text citation as (Zhang, 2015)
and in list of reference as: Zhang, B. (2015). Why Emirates Won’t Buy Used Planes. Reuters [Online]. Available at: http://www.reuters.com (Accessed: 4 May 2017)Is this approach fine?
