Hello, please i need some clarification on this issue.
If i want to cite this author, Bob Vause in my text and in my reference list, which of the following is appropriate? Consider year is 2013.
in text citation ( Vause, 2013)
Reference list Vause, B. (2013) ORIn test citation ( Bob, 2013)
Reference list Bob, V. (2013)Please i really need to be clarified and will appreciate your help. Thanks
October 7, 2015 at 9:22 am #275329@rosalemu – Bob is a first name and Vause is the family name so your first version where it shows Vause is correct
October 7, 2015 at 5:55 pm #275446Thank you very much. I really appreciate this. Thanks again
October 8, 2015 at 9:27 pm #275602Hi Admin,
I am still new here so please pardon me if i make any errors.
Please, i need help on this matter. How do i reference an article written by someone from a web based magazine or journal available over the web but the content of this article does not exceed a page.Is this the same like an electronic journal article? This is really confusing to me as i don’t know whether to reference it like a webpage or an electronic journal article? In fact, i am not even sure whether this is an electronic journal article.
Please i will appreciate help on this. Its something i am really struggling with. Thanks
October 8, 2015 at 9:37 pm #275604Yes it is like any electronic source – name in the text and full details in the list including the link to the website
To help deal with most different reference types please use the links in the answer to Q10 of Part 3 (the FAQs) in my article on our homepage

Hi Anyone,
How should i make my references clearly between annual report, press release, official website.
Currently, i cited them in text with (XYZ, 2014)?
can someone reply me if u know this
October 23, 2015 at 11:36 pm #278641You should use ‘appendages’ to distinguish different documents from the same source in the same year. Please see the Article on Referencing on our OBU homepage – link above – I think I have discussed appendages in the Golden Rules section.

In my ratio analysis, i always start with e.g..” Net profit margin increased by 10% as Net profit increased by 15% higher against 4% of increase in revenue”, followed by explanation. i got show a table for Net profit and Revenue as well, is it necessary present like this? is this called ratio descriptive?
or you say graph give a thousand words, so is it enough for me just give a graph instead of giving both (table and graph)?
Anything mentioned % in changes, can examiner see this themselves? or i need references it every single % changes to appendix?
November 1, 2015 at 1:13 am #279854@wrenching91 – yes this is what markers called ‘descriptive’ and it is NOT what they want to see as anybody can use a calculator and Excel and come up with this kind of stuff. Present Information in graphs and rather than keep saying something has increased by 10% etc (which because they are not blind they can see from the graph) or making other statements of the obvious instead EXPLAIN – say the 10% increase in gross profit in 2013 was because of…. [things like e.g. the introduction of the xyz model in the second half of the year. This proved so popular that sustained growth was achieved in the following year resulting in a further growth in gross profit in 2014 helped by economies of scale as cost of sales proportionally were lower (ABC annual report, 2014). The fall in the value of the local currency (Government financial stats, 2014) meant that overseas demand increased and the company was able to increase its market share driven by exports (ABC CEO statement, 2014)
You don’t really need tables and graphs and graphs are better. References add validity to statements. I have put in references in my paragraph as examples of where they would be expected.

@trephena If i using a source that containing different pages for my references. How should i do my references? can i reference it like this ( ABC, 2014, pp.3.10) to refer page 3 and page 10?
November 1, 2015 at 1:42 pm #279933@wrenching91 – 3 & 10 or 3 and 10 – 3.10 would imply section 3 subsection 10 or page 3 section 10 – either way it is unclear
November 9, 2015 at 4:28 pm #281296Hi,
I am using several published articles from the same newspaper published during the same year to write my report. I am concerned whether this would confuse the marker. For example: i will be ending up citing (ABC, 2015) at several places in the report. However, each citation relates to different articles published by the same newspaper during the same year.
Can you please guide me how to cite and supply reference (in the reference list) for these kind of information. Are there any methods to differentiate the citations and references from the other? Thank you 🙂
November 9, 2015 at 9:43 pm #281331@Rushi – please read the article on Referencing on our homepage http://www.opentuition.com/OBU where I explain this. It is a good idea to read all 3 parts but I think you will find I covered what you are asking about in the Golden Rules section
November 11, 2015 at 3:32 pm #281741I have used lots of news paper articles from new websites such as BBC, telegraph etc. I I used ‘website’ in the reference tools. But in reference list auto generated, the styles differs from the one OBU pack has provided where the news paper name is in italics and the titles are normal.
There are no specific option to select newspaper article from the tool. So i am wondering whether it is correct: for eg: one reference is listed as below in my list-Barret. H.,2015. what u need to know about abc (in italics) [online]
available at: http.www.ft.com………….
accessed at 27 aug 2027like that. please help
November 11, 2015 at 4:02 pm #281744@Eena – the title of a book or article is usually put in italics but don’t worry too much about the punctuation and this – the detail so that the marker can find it is more important
November 12, 2015 at 12:06 pm #281943Hello Trephena,
Please advice how to do the in-text referencing of the annual report of say XYZ Ltd. Will it be like this:
…………………… (XYZ Annual Report, 2014). or ………………… (XYZ, 2014).
thanks
November 12, 2015 at 6:05 pm #282027Probably either is acceptable. For clarification on referencing see my article on our homepage http://www.opentuition.com/obu in particular Part 2 ‘The Golden Rules’ – see Rules 5 &7
November 14, 2015 at 7:16 am #282256Hello Trephena,
After reading the above comments, am still confused. one last help from you.please.If ever my in-text citation for an annual report is like this:
………………………. (Mauritius Telecom Annual Report, 2013 p.6).in the reference list will it be like below:
Mauritius Telecom Annual Report (2013). Annual Report 2013. [Online]. Available at: url.com (Accessed date).
Is it ok? Plz advice.thanks
November 14, 2015 at 7:26 am #282259Your citations above seem fine. 🙂
(Yes you only need the relevant page number in the text and then just one reference in the list for the corresponding Annual Report)
November 14, 2015 at 7:44 am #282267many many may thanks, Trephena. i now feel that am on the right track.thanks
November 14, 2015 at 4:31 pm #282361Hi, good evening, guys.
Im a bit confused. The golden rule 5 said Designators MUST match.
So for reference as follows :
Bear, B. and Doern, G. (2001). The economic benefits generated by something and something. 28 November 2001. [Online]. Available at: URL (Accessed: 2 September 2015)Should my in-text citation be
(Bear, B. and Doern, G., 2001)or
(Bear and Doern, 2001)
i really don’t want to fail over a small detail like commas or initial name 🙁 omg
November 14, 2015 at 6:44 pm #282405Apologies about the confusion -it’s just that sometimes students significantly vary the designators so that readers really have to search through the list to try to find them and it is not always obvious at all e.g. journalist’s name in text but newspaper name first in the reference list. The way you are doing them though would be fine: normally in the text you just give the family name so your last version (Bear and Doern, 2001) and then in the list you would give the family name + initial so your first version with all the details of the document is therefore correct.
You wouldn’t have a problem with any of the versions you have set out as the matching is obvious – I have merely pointed out here what is strictly correct. However I will amend my advice in the ‘Golden Rules’ when I have a chance as I don’t want to cause any unnecessary confusion.
Don’t forget- you are allowed the odd slip with referencing anyway – they don’t expect 100% perfection – but overall ‘sloppiness’ and missing and completely mis-matched designators will start to annoy the markers but otherwise don’t worry you won’t be failed over what you point out are minor details like commas and full-stops! 😀
November 14, 2015 at 6:53 pm #282406Hi
Am finished with my project but for an in-text referencing of my selected company website, the appendages has reached upto letter ‘k’, (XYZ, 2015k). is that ok? thanks
November 14, 2015 at 8:17 pm #282413That implies you have used 11 different documents all dated 2015. Is that right? Remember you would use page numbers rather than a DIFFERENT appendage for the same annual report. Every different document i.e. everyone with a different appendage must be listed in the ref list which means if you have the same document listed you are not doing your list (and possibly the appendage system) correctly as you are repeating one or more of the documents.
November 14, 2015 at 8:27 pm #282414In fact am using the website of the organisation that I selected. The info came from the same website but from different webpages. Thats why, I make use of appendages in my text and in the reference list, I have put all of them because the URL are not the same. Please, correct me if am wrong.
