This website is wonderful.
https://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/library/how-to/citing-refs-harvard.html
November 12, 2012 at 1:36 pm #55221My mentor told me to put numbers in text instead of (name, date) and than give the complete reference in the reference list. Is this accepted version of Harvard style.
thanksNovember 12, 2012 at 3:29 pm #107117please guide me, my work is like this:
In text for example: the sales of the company increased by 5% [10] in year 2012.
{the bracket is in super script at the top of line}
in ref list like
1
2
3
.
.
10. Shell Pakistan Ltd (2012)
the list is perfect in Harvard style as per OBU in text numbers are assigned in place of name date style. My Mentor says that he has done this various times and got pass grades. this is acceptable variation of Harvard style. comment , I have done the project and this change will be very terrible.March 6, 2013 at 2:08 am #119338AnonymousInactive- Topics: 0

This is called Vancouver Style not the Harvard Ref. so do not add numbers. i made this mistake in my MBA and my marks were capped.

October 21, 2013 at 2:06 am #163632There is no 100% suggested answer of this question as it totally varies with respect to your selected topic and company. Based on our experience of mentoring various students, we always suggest student to use very limited direct quotes as huge number of direct quotes put bad image on RAP as it is conceived by marker’s of OBU that student did not do vast research and mainly rely on already provided information from various sources. The simple solution to avoid this aspect in your RAP is to reword all such information in your own words by keeping same original theme and then also provide reference as well with this information to acknowledge that you conceived ideas from someone else thoughts and at the same time plagiarism detection software will not highlight such own reworded stuff.
October 21, 2013 at 2:06 am #143260Hi
I need some help with referencing graphs. I am doing topic 8
If i created a graph in excel spreadsheet, how do I reference it?
1)I copy that graph from excel and paste it into word document(my main report), and how do I reference it? My graphs were created from the financial statements from the company website.
2)In my appendix section, is it ok if i copy and paste the financial statements from excel straight into it and also copy and paste the ratios calculated in excel into it?
3)can someone help to check if my referencing method is correct.
in-text citation:

October 21, 2013 at 3:09 am #143262For question 1, can I do it like this:
[this is my graph]
(Data source: Appendix) <—-my referencingthen in the appendix section i include the extract of the financial statements and the full list of ratios for the company
Is this alright?
October 22, 2013 at 12:18 am #143345sounds fine.
October 22, 2013 at 6:42 am #143353Thanks for replying.
So where do I mention the URL of where I got that financial statement? In the appendix(my excel spreadsheet), do I have to reference the URL of the financial statement?
How do I do that?
Thanks
October 23, 2013 at 12:40 pm #143443Can some kind souls pls tell me how do I do referencing in my excel(appendix)?
October 23, 2013 at 2:00 pm #143453Referencing for financial statements work like you need to refer the figures and paragraphs you are writing not graphs (Remember graphs are those for your ratios not the one such as inflation rates and other pictures and data from internet, you need to refer them). If you are stating:
Ratio X% increased to Y% because ABCD then refer this through either appendix number or direct to annual reports as:
(Annual Report 2011) or (Appendix 1, 2 or 3)You can refer annual reports through list of references in appendices. Write website and links in list of references and refer it to appendices and refer appendices to research report.
Thank You.
March 26, 2014 at 11:04 am #163159April 8, 2014 at 2:03 am #164688Have you followed the alphabetical or Numeric referencing? Can we use mix of both, something like this:
In the text: (1-XYZ LTD, 2011)
In the list: (1- XYZ LTD (2011) Annual Report & Accounts, pp.21-23. [Online]. Available at: https://www.nbplc.com/investor_relations.html (Accessed 15 March 2014)
Please advise if you know.
April 9, 2014 at 7:20 am #164838that number 1 is not required nor in text nor in list.
April 9, 2014 at 1:12 pm #164870Yeah I wasn’t satisfied with this approach. Thanks
Here is another one that could be used for referencing in the “References List”
April 12, 2014 at 2:34 pm #165124can anyone please tell me how to reference ratios
@SalahUddin … i saw your comment on the other topic like appendix X and so on but can u explain a bit more because i cant understand exactly how its done. I have done the ratio calculations in an excel sheet and written those values in the tables too in the RAP, should i refer it to the tables or the excel working?
and one more question if u dont mind, i have been doing financial analysis of a company and i can hardly get any info on the internet related to its operations and dealing, can i use the information only from the annual report.
P.S. i failed in the first submission due to analysis and referencing problem.April 12, 2014 at 2:42 pm #165126didnt see the reply button so i hope u will get notified by this reply. Thanks
April 12, 2014 at 3:04 pm #165129sales have increased by 10% in 2012 compared to 2011 (Appendix E)….
similar to this, is how i referenced my statements in my RR, Research Report.Appendix E is where the income statements were put into, by me, from the original Annual reports.
Appendix E was in excel format, and all the other appendices (3 others) were in excel format too.O no :D. you must find on financial websites like bloomberg and news websites like bbc etc that why has profits decreased in 2012.
you can search online by typing in google “profit decreased 2012”.
Google is a very good helper. Can i read your “marker comments”, maybe you can ‘copy paste’.
April 12, 2014 at 4:51 pm #165134i really appreciate your help so much and i am currently doing the project on Pakistan Tobacco company and if u can tell me some more sources i will be really grateful because i am struggling to find any information about the company. Thanks again so so much
this is my result
Your business analysis is good. Your financial analysis needs more work. You do not explain the movements in the ratios. Look at the following examples taken from your work: “The Operating profit margin has also increased overall but there was a decrease in last year which indicates higher administration and selling expenses, this could be due to the expenses on the security and the energy deficiency in the country” – you must undertake sufficient research to know what caused this, not to guess the reasons. “The Profit before interest and tax has been increasing overall 7% to 11% because there is a decrease in the finance cost which is due to the repayment of loans financed by selling the assets in the previous year. ” – you must look wider than the financial statements to include the impact of wider economic events, industry actions and corporate strategy. Where you do bring in wider reasons you do not reference where you got this information from. Generally there is little referencing in the financial analysis section.
You need to reference your financial analysis. All sources should be referenced including the annual report and accounts. Please use Harvard referencing (AUTHOR, DATE). Look at the following incorrectly stated references taken from your RAP: (Annual, 2012) (Tobacco Control Laws) (Tribune) (Trading Economics) (Pakistan tobacco company) These are not isolated examples. More worrying is the manner in which you cite direct, or near direct quotes. You have many of these throughout your report but you appear to be trying to pass these quotes off as your own as there are no inverted commas around the cited text. I have interpreted this as very poor referencing in this instance, but this could be construed as plagiarism, which is a serious academic conduct offence. You should not cut and paste when you are writing: read around a topic and write up in your own words.
April 13, 2014 at 7:30 am #165161According to your marker’s comments, you really need to google the reasons of changes in your ratios, e.g. profits, share price etc.
Don’t only see the first page of google, also go further, see the second page third page so on.
You might want to use MS Word’s internal referencing system, it makes life a lot easier and faster.
April 13, 2014 at 9:47 pm #165229Thanks again really appreciate your help, one last question if u dont mind. Since i have to update the financial analysis with latest financials should i update the business analysis too, because i already passed in that as the examiner said my business analysis was good.
