Dear Tutor,
This recently released exam stats are really discouraging. 2 out of every 3 candidates that wrote the exam failed the AAA!!!! Quite discouraging.I am in my revision phase. I just want to know if question practice is absolutely the best way to nail this exam? I am self-studying so every exam technique you could assist me with would help. I have been reading the exam reports too to identify the problems.
January 15, 2019 at 10:09 am #502018Yes – AAA (formerly P7 and before that 3.1) has a long history of pass rates in the range of 30-40% – and if you saw the scripts, you’d understand why. But don’t be discouraged, for students who “properly prepare” the pass rate is much, much higher!
Obviously there’s no point attempting questions without some study, but as soon as a student has a grasp of the syllabus topics “practice, practice, practice” is absolutely the best way to prepare – and don’t forget to sit a mock exam.
Please see the exam technique article “Strategic professional – options exams” here https://opentuition.com/acca/ and the more specific article “How to tackle the AAA Exam” here https://opentuition.com/acca/aaa/What’s really important about question practice for AAA is that it does not mean “jot down a few ideas and then audit the answers”. To get the most out of every exam style and standard question (specimen and recent exams and adapted past exam questions in an Approved AAA Revision Kit) you need to attempt it in the time allowed – spend longer on it if you want but rule off your answer at the point where the time is up. Then really critique your answer against the model answer – were there some “obvious” points that you didn’t make? (Can you see now why they were obvious?) Look at what you have written that isn’t in the answer – did you “pad” your answer with rote-learnt knowledge that wasn’t called for? Did you digress into matters that weren’t called for (i.e. did not answer the specific question set)? Question practice is a learning experience and the quality of your answers should improve. Though no two questions are ever identical, exam requirements tend to include common forms of words, so in the exam you will know exactly what is required.
