I emailed ACCA exam operation people perhaps if everyone got together then perhaps ACCA might take notice.

Yes it was good to know that I’m not the only one who thinks something is wrong with this exam paper….it’s way too complicated and in real life you would use so much support from theoretical to mentor to senior management. No one not even CEO do the work by them self it’s not possible otherwise it would be a one man team.

Anyway I thought Dec paper was better and I felt really confident and failed with 48%.

There is always that thought in my head somehow people have managed a pass, don’t understand how. Like some people have already said, done the revision exam practise got the knowledge under my belt but I melt in the exam because it’s twisting too twisting trying to decipher in 3 hrs.

One more attempting if I fail then I’m switching to auditing or tax and I think tax would be easier as the rules have to be remembered by heart that’s all no room for deviant text……but you never know!

This was my 4th attempt. I literally got 44% each and every time before.
My overall comments – I agree, the time pressure is insane. I actually felt more confident going into this exam as opposed to my previous attempts. Hoping for the best but expecting the worse so im already back to studying. This also my final paper before being qualified. I resorted to just writing points and explaining where I could to help get marks. I tried thinking outside the box but i mean in such a short time frame, theres only so much analytical thinking i can do. I did attempt the world of ppqs and i was actually seeing my answers closer and closer to the examiner’s.
    Now…not so sure. πŸ™

this looked like an open book exam without the open books. The first q was actually not too bad but the rest looked like some long forgotten ancient language that had to be deciphered in 3 hours it was very very long and the requirements were on the cryptic side even if you had the txt books in front of u it wouldnt of helped. The most cryptic confusing exam i have ever taken. My answer booklet looks like it was written by someone on cyrstal meth. I wouldnt expect june to b any different maybe marginally easier at best. We have to all adapt to the style of the examiner. If nothing he is demanding and expects a darn high standard. I would expect the markers to have sympathy so perhaps not all lost for you 46-49 percenters.

My 2nd time and I feel I did worse this time because of the 50% b***sh** in the scenarios, particularly in Q3, which takes up the scarce time you have. The implication is then an inefficient allocation of resources and decrease in the exam performance. The thing is that you have to read the whole scenario including the rubbish in order to find out where the examiner hide the important bits.

Q3 is quiet straight forward. Employees are secured not to be redundant and their bonus is related to profit so risk seeker and maximax for sure. Bank wants their capital repayment and interest back so risk averse maximin. Directors as stated in the question don’t want to lose anymore so they choose the option of minmise regret. Leaving the neutral attitude towards risk goes to VC using expected value.payoff table is not that complex to design..

I completely agree, the time factor is the main problem, there’s so much demanded in 3:15mins. I passed all my ACCA first time snd with P5 this is the 2nd time I am writing with still no confidence to pass.
The questions are very trickish, with the time pressure there’s no time to think.
The examiner needs to revise the rules governing P5. Is very sad I will pass all the ACCA papers but will abandoned ACCA because of just the last paper which is the horible P5.

P5 was horrible, Why even bother with ACCA, when there are other qualifications out there, I won’t advise anyone to start ACCA, it is horrible to ask people to do the impossibility!!!
So much to do in 3:15 mins,
with all the scenarios questions how can you use just 15mins to read them!!!
Then comes the strickish questions you have to read severally in order to understand,
    The demands are too much!!!

@Faye. now I am thinking about the matrix in light of TGee’s comment.
We correctly argue to subtract 20 instead of 5 per unit of over-production. However, in the first part of equation that I have wrote, we still include 25 contribution for over-produced units, which actually would not been earned if demand is less than production. Don’t know if I was clear enough?

P5 exam was really really time pressured. Q No:1 was scenario based while Optional Questions were more than longer than Q No: 1 and there so many information in questions which was hard to skim within given time constraints.

This examiner makes this exam more tough and tough day by day. This examiner should be changed.

It was my second attempt. Last time in December i got 48%. This time was the disaster, on the first instance the papers looks simple but when I started the paper, so many things were mixed up, was unable to rightly answer or build the positive answer. rightly application of knowledge to the scenarios was the key and I missed that.

You’re not alone in that feeling. I spent over 2hrs on Q1 and could not even read the last question, Q4, just jumped into writing generic answers.

I’m tired! I’m sincerely praying my efforts in Q1 and Q2 is crowned with success. I did all parts in Q1 except the ABC calculation for 6marks.

    God help me!

extremely time pressured! I chose Q1,2 and 4. The last one was really nice and discussable about PSO. I feel, that another 15-20 minutes would bring more marks to me. Hope to get 50…
    P5 – extremely challengeble option!
    don’t ever give up, guys!

    Hi all,

I felt really bad after this paper. I’m still feeling bad because last diet, i failed with 47%. This time, I studied really hard and solve lots of questions and read practically all the articles. The answers to the questions I solved were on point, tailored to the scenarios. I was more confidence going into this exam, in fact, i predicted the areas to exam correctly VFM, Performance Pyramid, Building Blocks and Risk. I solved extra questions on these “particular areas” on Tuesday, as if i knew the examiners mind. Alas! it was the most cryptic exam I ever wrote from Paper P1 to P7.

At the first glance of the questions, I was like, Bam!!! My oh my!!! I was on the moon…While delving into the scenerio, believe me, I was lost in the process. I answered questions 1,2 & 4. Infact, I hardly had time to pick points in the scenerio. I was reading the requirements every 5mins to ensure I was writing the correct thing. My strategy during the exam was intact, I managed to complete about 65% – 70%.

I feel I’m losing confidence in P5………. I’m pretty felling bad and couldn’t help, but frustrated.

Can someone tell me, who is the examiner for Paper P5. That guy/lady, I’m so sorry to say this, is a sadist. Yes! some people will pass, but then what skill have we got to learn that was demonstrated in the requirement. Very vague and requires critical thinking to the extent that scared times would have been lost.

How can we channel our comments to ACCA with respect to Paper P5? Can we create a forum for P5 students and channel our thoughts about the examiner and his style of questions to the appropriate quarters?

Don’t get it twisted, I love Performance Management in practice and to study, but this exam really make me look like a “not-too-smart” guy! This is the final paper holding me from being an affiliate.

    I really need help…….

    Teskyman!

Freestyle paper. Questions seemed easy enough but there is no certainty in providing assessment of scenario.
I listened to all of the podcasts available and I found it helped my inner-voice while reasoning with the text given.

1st attempt at this… Still quite optimistic

In december exam I scored 46%, did some studies and was coming to this exam more confident. I did Question 1, 2 and 4. I agree with most of the comments that Question 1 was horrible, I did repeat myself a lot and am sure it will not score a lot. I can’t understand examiner’s approach to this exam, what he wants to achieve with this approach? I understand and agree that accountants have to be able to discuss topics and they application, however I think that he has gone too far with this.

In terms of complaining I think we can email ACCA on this complaints@accaglobal.com and link the forum so they get feedback. In the email express our concern and say we wish for some action to be taken or we are changing the paper not sitting blah blah so at the very least they are aware of our concern.

To those who are optimistic about passing, I wish you all the best but please don’t think we are whinging…people pay money spend time to be treated fairly, for ACCA to show respect and address students needs and development. Passing this paper will not make you the best accountant nor will it make you ready for the real world. It does not depict reality…passing this paper will please the examiner the most. Out of the ACCA world you’ll have to pick up skills and knowledge which ACCA don’t teach you. ACCA knowledge gives you the groundwork for better understanding so when you do come across these scenarios you know what is going on even then you’ll have to brush up on knowledge unless your very good at memorising.

I have been working for a while and I don’t even use my knowledge of ACCA to full extent it’s not required….I hardly use it in a complex form…that’s just reality of commercial working environment…maybe it’s different at practices etc but I’m sure the training is more effective than knowledge for passing an exam as your practising constantly. ACCA are there to prepare us and not to ensure we mastered the knowledge techniques before we even learn how to do the job!

I’m sitting this paper for the first time in June so thought i’d be smart and see what came up in March…..after reading these comments in which 99% have been along the lines of, P5 is worst thing ever invented i know realise i have made a massive mistake and now slightly worried about June!

Anyone with any decent tips at all, please post!

I sat P5 a couple of times, maybe even three I can’t remember. I gave up and tried tax instead thinking it followed more logic. But not working in a tax environment (which the ACCA advises is required to pass that paper) I was unsuccessful in that too. I felt incredibly low about my exams, deciding I wasnt even going to continue. I will be timed out of ACCA in 2017 so have decided to give P5 another go after having a break, hoping things will have changed since I last sat it. Sadly, it looks like things have not changed and the pass rates remain incredibly low. After reading the above comments I already feel disheartened about my June exam – thinking it must be impossible πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™

Seemed like a fair paper, but still think I failed again. I know the topics, just not how to answer the questions I think.

Maybe I should do P4 instead, I only have one left to go. any thoughts?
