There is an MCQ in the specimen paper which says…

Imran claims that Zak owes him £1,000 as a result of a breach of contract.

In which court will Imran start his action against Zak?

    1) The High Court
    2) The county court
    3) The magistrates’ court

Could you please explain in which court the action will take place?

High Court is clearly not appropriate!

Whereas County Court is the relevant route for civil cases, for an amount of £1,000 surely Magistrates Court would be the start point

    OK?

The correct answer is county court but in my textbook it says that county court deals with unresolved matters of contract law and tort law.

Since it is a civil law between two individuals so it should be county court (That is what I understood, correct?)

It cannot be magistrate court because it deals with small domestic matters even though it has both civil and criminal jurisdiction. SO it is surely not a domestic matter. (correct too?)

Magistrates Court deals with more than just small domestic matters and I believe that a case of a missing £1,000 would be heard initially in Magistrates Court

    This is from Wikipedia:

“The magistrates also have an important role to play in authorising actions related to the criminal process, such as arrest, continued detention, search and seizure of property. The civil jurisdiction of the magistrates court covers family and related cases, licensing, some debt collection and a variety of orders largely in relation to children.”

Would your scenaria fall under “some debt collection” I wonder?
