    4a.1 The following four data pairs have been obtained: (1, 5), (2, 6), (4, 9), (5, 11). Without carrying out
any calculations, which of the following correlation coefficients best describes the relationship between x
    and y?
    ? –0.98
    ? –0.25
    ? 0.98
    ? 0.25
The answer is 0.98 could you please explain how are we supposed to answer this question without calculation? is there some no? please explain and also I have got my MA exam in 3 days I have been doing well in open tuition mocks like getting 80- 90 % is it enough to ensure being passed? What should I do at last moment? I am a bit nervous please help…Provide some tips I would be grateful.

Firstly, both values are increasing and therefore there is positive correlation.

Secondly, even without doing any calculations, it is obvious just by looking at the figures that the two sets of data are going up more or less in line with each other.

Of the two positive choices, 0.98 is close to 1 (and 1 would mean that they were going up exactly with each other), but 0.25 is much nearer to zero which would mean that they were not really going up together much at all.

So the answer has to be +0.98.

Apart from continuing to practice (and watching again the free lectures on anything you are not sure about) the most important thing in the exam is not to spend too much time on any one question.

Go through and answer the questions that are short (and so do not take much time to read) and are on topics you are happy with. Answer them and skip the others. When you have done that, then go back and spend more time on the longer and maybe harder questions. But keep your eye on the time and when you see that there is only 5 minutes left then go back and guess any questions that you have not answered. That way you are sure to get the 50% you need to pass (and probably a lot more than 50% 🙂 )
