The time taken to produce the first batch of 50 units was 500 hours. The total time for the
first 16 batches of 50 units was 5,731 hours.
What is the learning rate (to the nearest %)?
How would one solve this in Excel? I tried to understand from the back of the kit but I couldn’t
The average time per batch when 16 batches are produced is 5,731/16 = 358.1875 hours.
Producing 16 batches is doubling 4 times, and therefore the learning rate is the fourth root of 358.175/500 = 0.92 (or 92%)
You can either use the spreadsheet provided to calculate the 4th root, or you can use the calculator provided.
Have you watched my free lectures on learning curves where this is all explained? The lectures are a complete free course for Paper PM and cover everything needed to be able to pass the exam well.
