Hello tutor,
I am extremely confused over short-term employee benefits right now.
For short-term accumulating paid absences, we charge an expense in the year the employee renders the service that increases their entitlement for future paid absences, right?
There is this example provided by BPP:
A company gives its employees an annual entitlement to paid holiday leave. if there is any unused leave at the end of the year, employees are entitled to carry forward the unused leave for up to 12 months. At the end of 20×9, the company’s employees carried forward in total 50 days of unused holiday leave. Employees are paid $100 per day.State the required accounting for the unused holiday carried forward.
Solution:
The short term accumulating paid absences should be recognised as a cost in the year when the entitlement arises, i.e. 20×9.Why is BPP recognising an expense in the year the employee uses the entitlement instead of in the year the employee performs the service (i.e. 20×8)? Am I missing something?
June 2, 2018 at 9:30 am #455451Hi,
We are recognising the expense as the employee has not taken the holiday and has worked for the additional week(s). We must therefore recognise an expense for the service that the employee has provided.
Thanks
June 4, 2018 at 7:55 pm #456167So to confirm..we would accrue the expenses only in 20×9?
Dr Profit or loss
Cr accrued expenses?June 5, 2018 at 9:14 pm #456665Hi,
Yes, we recognise the expense when the employee works the extra days and release it the following year when the holiday is used.
Thanks

You’ve been a great help to me over the past few months and I am really grateful that you took your time to answer my questions in detail. I scored 75% but I know that I wouldn’t have achieved this without your help! Thank you!! 🙂 🙂 Finally onto ACA now! Have a great day ahead!
Derrick.
