This is the ‘Ask the Tutor’ forum. If you want replies from other students then better to repost on the general SBL forum.

The exam concentrates on application of knowledge rather than reproducing knowledge, however application does imply that you know how to analyse data and argue for a point of view or conclusion. For that, you need a foundation of knowledge.

I would caution against learning in detail everything contained in a full text book. You then run the risk of concentrating too much on reproducing your hard-earned knowledge. I think our notes and lectures give sufficient background knowledge, then concentrate on practising questions. For that you need to buy a question book from BPP (we give a 20% discount is ordered through this site) or Kaplan. There are also three specimen exams and two past exams on the ACCA’s site.

Sorry to hear about your trouble with this exam.

You presumably know the factual material by now so your problem must be in how you interpret and answer questions. I also assume that you have practised lots of questions from the ACCA’s resources and from a revision kit/question book from either BPP or Kaplan. If you haven’t then you should.

However, practising questions on your own, and in particular judging and assessing your answers can be difficult. Your answer might look similar to the model answer yet miss what is important. I don’t know where you are based, but my suggestion is to try to find some sort of question-based revision course where your questions are taken in and assessed/marked independently. The feedback is usually very valuable.

Thank you Ken Garrett . Agreed on your points. I live in Malaysia (Johor state) . As I am also working full time( with 30% travelling requirement) finding for credible personal tutor to guide and assess my answering skills. Otherwise, facing issues with completing answers during exam and presummed did enough but mismatch once see the unfavourable results. My only intentention is to avoid repeating same mistake so need specific assessment since we are unable to check our final exam paper in detail. Thanks

You don’t need to read the text book, but you should read our notes and listen to our lectures. This is an exam that is primarily one of application rather than knowledge. You need to know models and frameworks to apply them. However, in some ways, too much detailed knowledge is dangerous because you will want to show it off and that will not necessarily address the question requirements.

On https://opentuition.com/acca/sbl/ there is an introductory lecture.

It is very important to try lots of questions from the ACCA’s specimen exams and past exams and also either BPP’s or Kaplan’s revision kits.
