I used doubling process with initial 200hrs with the average 200 then multiplied by 88% down to 16
December 2, 2013 at 6:26 pm #149283What is a percentile advantage?
December 2, 2013 at 6:32 pm #149284Any idea ..marks are as per steps or final answer ????
December 2, 2013 at 6:38 pm #149285i made a mistake ,instead of using 5.8 $ or 6 $ i used total price (5.8*2.2ms) . Although i got rite fav n adv varainces ….but the amounts was wrong…any chance to get any mark out of it. 🙁
December 2, 2013 at 6:44 pm #149289It was a good exam and I’m confident I will pass. Did a mistake to think that the time was up 15 before it actually was (forgot about the mins reading time, haha) so I did the exam in 2:45 hours 🙂
Some comments about previous comments in the thread.
Q1. The first two products should be further processed but not the last one. Calculation example below; Extra profit after process 2 minus Profit lost since it wasn’t sold after process 1.
1200 h x 95% x (6.80-0.50) – 1200 x 5.90Q3. Don’t remember the TARs but large panel was better. However, had to produce 1000 small due to contract. Total hours 5d x 50w x 12h x 90% if I’m not mistaken.
Q5. Adverse planning variances (except for bedsheet usage as it was 0). Favourable operational variances for all but bedsheet usage variance which I got to be 48000 adverse, I think.
December 2, 2013 at 6:53 pm #149294FYI For question 4 financial analysis question it only wanted you to comment on actual vs budget on the one company Sisco or whatever it was called. Not the second company to the right.
December 2, 2013 at 7:08 pm #149299i also got the same answer! but i was confused! because we had to supply at least 1000 units of small panels every year!
December 2, 2013 at 7:13 pm #149301how it an be 0 variances and how the operational usage variance for bed sheet
can be adverse…???December 2, 2013 at 7:16 pm #149302what is thiat??? never heard it on ACCA marking system
December 2, 2013 at 7:20 pm #149303Thanks OpenTuition, Thanks Mr John Moffat. I owe you guys a million. I found Dec 2013 F5 to be very easy, and all I read were your notes and watched the videos.
I attempted all 5 questions (I knew all 5 :))
I guess I was just too lucky, the last thing I read this morning was Environmental Accounting, so I had those 5 marks
@ umerazizch – yeah, the optimum plan was 1800 large panels, 300 small panels. Max profit was about 3.something million (cant remember exactly).
Operational variances (Price and Usage) were Favorable, the manager did extremely well.
On further processing, further process 1st 2 items (cant remember what they are called, stop further processing of the third)
On learning curve, (just apply Mr Moffats technique in the videos – though the formula could still work but if you notice the cummulative numbers were doubling i.e. 2, 4, 8 etc) for cummulative batches up to Oct. So abandoning the Learning formula, the cumm average time = learning rate(0.88) * average time for the 1st. The 1st took 200 hrs, the avg time for the next = 200 * 0.88 and so on. Steady state occurs after this, calculate the hours for the 8th batch (Cumm 8 – Cumm 7) and apply to all other cumm batches after this.
On financial performance, Net Margin and Gross Margin. Calculate and discuss this. Note the increase in payroll cost. Was this justified? Also the ad campaign investment, treat this as capital employed (though it isnt 🙂 the assumption I made is Fixed Asset less current liabilities (Capital employed) remained unchanged over both periods)) and compute ROCE. Was that investment justified? Yes – market share increased, No – when we didnt make that investment in 2012, we had better returns for the 0.5m. We certainly do need further information, both for the financial and non financial performance measures.
On advantages and disadvantages of involving the senior staff, that was on buttom up – participatory style of budgeting. Disadvantages – it takes a lot of time, managers could build slack. Advantages – senior staff are closer to the shop floor, so they can make realistic inputs, particpation would motivate managersDecember 2, 2013 at 7:37 pm #149306>>>@ umerazizch – yeah, the optimum plan was 1800 large panels, 300 small panels. Can’t be! Minimum 1000 small panels have to be produced each year.
December 2, 2013 at 7:51 pm #149309onyxera & helplogon : It mentioned in the question that the minimum units you can produce for any the panels should be 1000. So you had to do was … Small panels = 0.6 bottleneck hour per unit x 1000 units = 600hours
Subtract the 600 from the total bottle neck hours available. and the divide the time left with 1.6 bottleneck hour per large scale to get the optimum production quantity. You should have gotten 1500 units of large scale.December 2, 2013 at 7:57 pm #1493122evilozfon: not any. it is precisely 1000 small panels. Anyway your calculations are right. I did exactly the same.

December 2, 2013 at 8:03 pm #149314i forgot d 1000 small panels,,,OMG :(…….thanks guys, best wishes

December 2, 2013 at 8:17 pm #149319The exam was okay, but as usual time ran out. I am amazed how many persons can remember what they wrote, my mind is a blur.
