@trephena i am due to appear for the OBU BSc, i am facing a small problem. The company i have chosen under the food products category, is a private entity for which i can get the required data for topic 8. This company only exports.
The problem is that its competitor is a listed entity with operations in local market as well as exports. Now i do not believe them to be on the same level. The listed competitor is huge in every aspect.
Can i use that competitor to compare my chosen private entity with? Furthermore, there are no other competitors in the market that are listed so i cant get their data. The competitor chosen is the only listed entity that has published financials and its export process has a similar business model as the private entity which i will use. Moreover, it does hold a significant marketshare.

Hi Sharon,I think this is something that you need to be thinking about yourself as opposed to me giving you any answers. Where has the question come from?
Thanks
Sir, this question is from the coursework 1 of Msc in Professional Accountancy. i am actually surprised to see a person asking about it in here.

I’m so confused. UoL and UCL are two unrelated universities and UCL provides study meterials for UoL, aren’t they?
Whose name will stand on the MSc degree, UoL or UCL? I can easily recognise UCL in the QS world ranking but I cannot find out UoL (however some of its member schools, yes, but on the over 300th positions). It is a significant difference.
The topic on ACCA website also mentions alot of UCL but we all know that who actually in charge of the programme is UoL. It seems something are tailored to make the readers misunderstand.
Someone can make me clear about that?University College London is a member university of University of London. You can find this info on wikipedia here:

I got WACC of approx 14% in Q1
I used the following steps at arriving at this:
1) ungear C’s beta equity to arrive at C asset beta
2) weight asset betas of both companies (C and A) to receive combined asset beta as instructed in question
3) re-gear combined asset beta to arrive at combined equity beta
4) using CAPM receive Ke
5) using pre-tax cost of debt 6% of combined Co receive WACC at approx. 14% (ratio of 40:60 holds after business combination)
6) this WACC was used to discount potential synergy (tax&lay offs)Why so many people here write that they got 9%?
Precisely, thats what i did
September 27, 2015 at 9:10 am #273747Finally passed on 2nd attempt. all thanks to Adrian at https://learningluminarium.com/ 🙂
March 25, 2015 at 7:03 pm #238836i failed my first attempt due to performing superficial business models of swot, pestel and 5 forces. (Although i did provide some details). the marker wants them to be more in detail. So for the resubmission is it okay if i only go for SWOT or pestel only as i feel i can write alone for anyone given the word limit?
and if i write now the thesis on a completely different company, will my RAP still be capped to grade C?
March 14, 2015 at 1:14 pm #232365just a heads up, OBU have now made available the citation plugin for EndNote x7
December 8, 2014 at 5:33 pm #219474exactly, there is no right answer to most of these kind of questions. if you can justify then you get the marks so be happy 🙂
December 8, 2014 at 5:30 pm #219470well as per my calculation it was a star as the growth rate was more than the industry, with ROCE and Profitability also being more than the industry plus high market share
December 8, 2014 at 5:13 pm #219458road was star and yes it was 2.2%
December 8, 2014 at 5:10 pm #219454@Baljit i wrote exactly the same stuff except Q2 part b, a bit different. Q3 you did right it was about mitigation and other things. i wrote P1 Tara and effective risk management plus a contingency plan, Part b of Q3 wrote only 3 lines, BAM, there goes my paper! Times up honey
November 6, 2014 at 11:48 am #207972@trephena -they can fail, i emailed bsc guys and this is there response:
“Thank you for your email. One of the challenges that accountants face worldwide is how to analyse data from companies with different year ends. We expect that if you have chosen companies with differing year ends that you will use the most appropriate techniques to complete your analysis.
Pro-rating is one of the techniques that our markers will expect you to use.
Kind regards
”we need to warn guys who have not yet submitted the project
They also attached the following two files and sent it to me:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/0avqv00twdu85j7/FINANCIAL_NOTES-15.pdf?dl=0November 5, 2014 at 9:21 am #207788@trephena -the year end for my company is 31 march 2014 but now its first quarter financials are also available at june 2014 which is also the competitor year end date.
i have used Annual report for the year ended 31 march 2014 and for competitor june 2014, so do they appear to be the latest financials??? or am i to use 1st quarter financials (very less information has been provided in those)??
November 5, 2014 at 6:53 am #207776@trephena – Allow me to explain, in-text citations are to be provided in the List of References. Bibliography, as you already know, will contain sources which have been read and not cited in text.
In the glossary, as i used definitions from books and other sources, i provided in-text citations for them. Now the sources for those in-text citations, i have mentioned them under bibliography instead of the list of references. So is it okay or should i move them to references?
November 4, 2014 at 3:11 pm #207659i emailed acca brookes connect officer asking which style under harvard is acceptable.
he replied all harvard styles are acceptable but it is recommended to use Harvard > Brookes style.
so guys to make life easier, open word>click on reference tab> style and select Harvard – Angilia 2008 (Its nearly the same as brookes very minor difference)
whenever you want to insert citation, in the reference tab click insert citation and check show all bibliography fields. fill out the ones with ” * ” next to them.
Once done at the end click bibliography in the references tab to enter them in alphabetical order as advised by the BSc information pack.
If you dont have Harvard – Angilia 2008 style, google it. You will find it
November 4, 2014 at 11:10 am #207629@trephena another question. i am having a list of references and bibliography. in the glossary provided in the appendix, i have cited them and provided for in the bibliography. is it okay in bibliography or should i shift it into references?
November 4, 2014 at 9:20 am #207616@trephena one more query, should i include appendices in table of contents in thesis or not?
Please note that my reference list is under Appendices

@wajiman – The Appendix is the appropriate place for a formula sheet. The Appendices are for anything that is incidental to the main report – background details and information that supports some of the findings but which if in the main report would detract from the main findings and not add anything new to the analysis.Thanks. So this means that i can only give the definitions in the main body only. Well then lets see what i can do about. 🙂
December 7, 2013 at 2:51 pm #151498messed this paper like hell, calculated wrong EOQ, wrote the correct formula to get the discount but got confused, in lease vs buy need to use the discount rate of the borrowing, used no discount rate at all, calculated the real cash flow wrong and as well as the NPV ( forgot to minus the capital cost and investment from the final figure). Did not know what to write in attractions of short or long term lease :/
December 5, 2013 at 7:26 pm #150812@Mahoysam there was also a second approach to that question, i first stated the ethics then risks to them and the remedy which the company could follow. so i guess if you have written this too it will work
December 5, 2013 at 7:13 pm #150798December 4, 2013 at 6:44 pm #150342December 4, 2013 at 6:37 pm #150337December 4, 2013 at 6:36 pm #150334@cosmic89 now i know why my cash flow did not balance it was due to the equity dividends, where was that info given??? we also had to add back 700 on fair value valuation as it was a non cash transaction.
for the interest we needed to create a T- account
